This is crazy news. Change is always scary, but I look forward to seeing what the future holds for everyone. Good Luck, Jeff, and thank you for all the years of great entertainment here at GB! o7
Very cool stuff, thank you for this. Mostly what I would expect, but some neat exceptions, surprised to not see Skyrim on this list. I half expected to see a Tony Hawk game on this list, but I suspect that's just due to the sheer number of games that came out in a short time frame (same for Guitar Hero and Mega Man). Also, who knew James Pond 2 had so many ports? I guess that popularity doesn't always have a direct correlation on the number of ports!
Really feel Jeff's pain on his keyboard situation. Just had a static shock blow up my keyboard of 10+ years a couple weeks ago.
I also need to ground myself literally every time I stand up. I use an intermediary object to make the process somewhat less painful (a Leatherman in my case, but I know a lot of people use keys for the same effect).
I'll definitely miss the energy and enthusiasm that Dan brought to so many videos and podcasts. In that spirit, even though it's not GB related, I'm glad to hear that Panning the Stream will continue on.
I use an extension on chrome called custom blocker to block elements of the page to get rid of this problem,
Using that rule in the picture hides the timer of the video from the GB player for any url that contains this-is-the-run,
also I have a second one for the same url that hides
//div[contains(@class, 'js-vid-buffer')]
which hides the buffer line as well (the red line that fills in as the video plays) so that way on this is the run videos you can watch without knowing how long it is or how much is left!
In addition to all that, I'm interested in the "for whatever reason" that attendance in Smash tournaments is mostly male, and whatever moral judgements would be made about that.
I think that the "whatever reason" that's being referred to is simply a byproduct of decades of perception of videogames, and especially "hardcore" videogames as a male pastime and the subsequent marketing of it as such over the years. Of course I can't speak its intention (if any), but I definitely didn't read it as judgmental.
I know this was mentioned in the article, but anyone with even the slightest interest in fighting games should give @pattheflip's book a read. It (along with last year's EVO) is what finally got me thinking about taking fighting games seriously and I can trace most of my current (limited) competence directly back to his outstanding book. If you're looking for an a way to get "in" to fighting games, there's no resource I would recommend higher.
