The life of a new Indie Development Group

  Rampant Studios

Who are we?

Well, at the moment we are a small group of students who decided that playing games just wasn't enough. We started out with our own projects and kind of merged into one idea we are now following behind.  Our main talent-pool is mainly programming, as such we have no artistic talents (Other than sketching out rough diagrams and 'ideas' we may have). As we are just starting up, we are working on our first project together but so far are making good progress.

What do we plan to do?
With all hopes going towards releasing a game that people will enjoy and in the worst case get a few laughs out of it. We are fed up with the way the game industry is going with the Ultra-Realism being pushed into most games and the fact that studios with multi-million budgets just seem to have lost focus with what games are really about (I'm looking at you Infinity Ward). Sure, running around and spraying people with guns is fun but when did we loose games like Mario and the Legend of Zelda? Or games like Shenmue with their awesome story-lines?

How are we going to do it?

Currently we are talking to a Graphics studio about collaboration on a project we have in mind. Things are going great so far, though its a bit early for details! When we have something we can officially show off though I'll be posting it on here.

We plan on releasing games that are fun to play, have tongue in cheek humour and push the boundaries of the industry towards more humour games that don't end in brining the player into situations within the real world. Isn't that what gaming is for, escapism, at least for moment your in the game.

The point of this blog?

My main reason for making this blog is to document how we do, and what we do. So we can look back at anything we do and learn from it. Hopefully others will find this interesting to read and we can help people out while we do what we love doing!

Wrapping up

I hope people don't get offended by anything I've written, if you do please drop me a comment and I'll tell you why I think these things.
Anyway, Rampant Studios will be pushing towards our first game with all we have so expect to see something pretty soon!

Whats going on with 28 Carrots Later?

You can find the project hosted at ModDB -  http://www.moddb.com/games/28-carrots-later

What's going on?

Currently we are tackling the 28 Carrots Later game on two fronts, the artist and the programmatic sides. We felt that we should keep everyone up-to-date with what we are currently working on so the project doesn't look stagnant.

Technical Stuff  [Danny Goodayle]

I am currently working on getting a Grid based pathfinding system (Like the one used in the RTS demo for NeoAxis) into our game, this will allow for more elaborate maps to be created within the game as the AI will be aware of obstacles and overcome them to reach their goal (the player).
Currently it's working pretty well, however I'm just trying to optimise it so we can have hordes of creatures after the player at once without a major slowdown.

On the game-play front of things I'm adding in an objective system for the player (Pick x amounts of this object up to proceed) along with prep work for our new models that we've got coming in soon!

 Artistic Stuff  [Jo Fripp]

Mark Kukendall

We have a new concept artist that we a pleased to welcome to our team, Shawn Norwood, who created a great concept for a laser based weapon we plan to include in the game.   Along with Shawn Norwood joining as a concept artist we have Mark Kuykendall joining us as a 3D Artist and creating a great model of a weapon in a very short time. Together we hope to create some great concepts and artwork for 28.

Our plans at the moment are to focus on the creation of our creature concepts into 3D artwork and get them included in the game, create the weapons to use within the game and produce some concepts of levels to include within the game. So far we are very happy with the progress of development.

The state of things  [Danny Goodayle]

I hope this sum's up what we've achieved so far and lets you know the way we are going to progress. I will be updating everyone with what we will be adding in terms of game play along with features we plan on including. I can't wait to get the new models in and get some new map's developed for everyone to mess around with. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

28 Carrots Later gets some concept art!

The Spitter

 Nice teeth
 Nice teeth
The ranged attacker of the zombies, this creature will have the ability to spit acidic chemicals onto the player from a distance, this will give the game the extra difficulty of dodging their attacks while fighting off hordes of runners. These creatures will be quite easy to kill, a good shot to the head is all it takes.

The Runner

 Eat something please!
 Eat something please!
The runner will be a fast moving creature whose main purpose is to slow the player down an cause light damage to them. This character will be very easy to kill, with a couple of shots being all you need to take them down. However they will rarely be alone during the game, mainly travelling with large groups of the same creatures.

The Brutus

 Steroids?
 Steroids?
This beast is the zombies ultimate weapon, this creature is slow, however has the ability to kill the player almost instantly, should it catch the player. The Brutus is very slow moving, however when aided by Runners and Spitter's, it will have the chance to move in on the player and then finish them off. The Brutus will be able to take many hits, almost an entire magazine of conventional weapons.
