Just Lost My Summer Job :(

I've worked at a restaurant for the better part of two years. The hours were flexible, which allowed me to have enough time for college and still make some cash. I went into work yesterday to find out there closing the restaurant down for good two days from now. I'm pretty upset considering half of the people that worked there were good friends of mine from high school. I applied for a job a Game Stop today and it looks like my chances of getting hired are relatively good, but I can't help feeling a little bitter sweet about the whole situation.

Have you ever gotten laid off? Have you ever gotten fired? How did you handle it?

yep, i know how you feel. i worked at a place that did company pic nices, weddings, and other such events, they went out of business because the owner owed money to the bank that he never paid back. i worked there for about 3ish years. it was an alright job. they did give me some hours, sometimes i would work there for like 17 hours straight.

i just graduated from college. there isn't really any jobs out there for me. i'm kind of hoping that i get a job at a printing place that i applied to.

I'm pretty sure my place of employment is just dangling by a thread. I've squeaked by two rounds of layoffs so far and now they have us working 4 days a week instead of 5. Been really worried, but just trying keep my head down and collect a paycheck.

at least you had a job :( I've been unemployed for a year.   Sucks having a college degree and little work experience, nobody wants to hire you.

Laid off last week, but I'd only been there a few months and was casual anyway. Not that bummed, I get a real holiday to play games, plus they heavily implied they'd probably rehire me later this year.

I've never left a job of my own volition, every company i've ever worked for has dissolved and laid off their staff.

sucks.

I'm not only grateful that I got to work with my friends, but that I made new friends at work. Some of the friendships I made at that job are more valued than the dollars that were earned there.

Yes, worked at a temporary job three-to-four years. Helped significantly with paying for college.
New manager was hired.
The next day, I get a telephone call that wakes me up stating I shouldn't come in, and that I am being laid off for budgetary reasons

How did I handle it? I'm going to say I handled it well...
...Even though every-time I think back to that specific week, my memory get's blurry and I have an increased interest to break inanimate objects. Or just anything around me. Oh, and all the colors of my vision turn blood-red. I also hear lots of screaming, that's not audibly produced by me.

...Yeah, I handled it well. ...This thread made me sad.

Did they at least offer you a letter of recommendation? It's the least they could have done.

Nope.
Yeah, I know.
In all seriousness, I'm actually quite happy that I left upon reflection. To say that they were "weird" is a vast understatement. To be honest, I'm surprised they are functional. Let's just leave it at that.
I just wished they didn't get rid of me over the phone. I never understood that, given the personal context of how long I worked there and the situation.

Yes, I've been fired from a couple jobs. It's not that big of deal for me. If I'd really loved the jobs, I suppose it would have had more of an impact.

Fortunately for me, I haven't been, as I've worked for my mom for the last couple years. I'll be leaving this job in the fall for college, too. I feel like they should've been able to tell you if they were closing the restaurant sooner than two days notice, though.

Sucks, friend. Glad you'll probably get a new job soon, though.

They don't do that normally, because everyone will quit before the business closes.

Yeah, i hope you get a decent reference from them. And I've been made redundant twice in three years. First was a tobacconist which closed due to new licensing laws, (smoking ban didn't help) and then a clothes shop I worked for went under. Kind of used to it now, lol. Still a bummer though.

At least you didn't get fired.
