My favorite NES games

Lots of fond memories of wasted hours playing NES games.

Not sure I'll ever finis this list, as I probably forget half the games I loved on the NES.

I owned some of these games and many others were just rented or played at a friend's house.

List items

  • My money is on either SMB or SMB3 as the greatest game of all time. If only I had the internet for guides and secrets when this game came out. :-D

I remember feeling sheer ecstasy when my NES was first hooked up and I popped this game in. I couldn't believe I had a game this great to play for free as much as I wanted in my home.

  • Perhaps the greatest game of all time.

  • Had the gold cart and everything. The overworld main music is probably my favorite tune from any game. Though you do it hear it A LOT.

  • Part of the two player same-screen glory days.

  • Multiplayer racing all on one screen? Yes, please.

  • I loved this game.

  • Wish I still had my copy of this game. Great full color enemy guide and map. It was a thing of beauty.

I love how you can play the game over and over and use different characters to fill out your party.

  • My sister and I came up with our own 'game within the game' on this one. You could play two players on the same screen. We would:

    (1) Furiously mash whichever button was used to pick your fellow chipmunk up

    (2) Run to the nearest bottomless drop

    (3) Jump off and attempt to throw the other guy away so that the thrower could make it back to the ledge and the throwee would fall to their doom.

    This amused us for hours.

  • I hear this and the original Final Fantasy are considered brutally difficult, but I don't remember them that way. I probably just played around on the easier levels over and over.

  • Loved Cabal, and others like it, in the arcade and had to have this game for the NES.

  • Don't ask me why, but I loved this game.

  • I remember on at least one occasion having a marathon session with a buddy and creating a few of our own tracks. If only you could save and share them over the internet back then.

  • Loved this game in the arcade and was so happy to actually be able to play it at home.

  • Rented this game and told a buddy about how awesome it was at school. We were jacked to try multiplayer, so he rode home with me on my bus and we played for hours... Without telling our parents about this plan. He got in some serious trouble, but it was so worth it.

  • My sister and I would play this together all the time. We need more single-screen multiplayer games today.

  • Had the Nintendo Power guide and totally geeked out with this bad boy.

  • Dragon Warrior ruled.

  • I spent hours and hours and hours leveling up my guy.

  • Loved all three mainline SMB games for the NES, but this one is clearly the runt of the litter.

  • I'd have to play that section where you ride the motorcycle thing over and over. Insanely difficult.

  • Surprisingly solid game.

  • Ah, I was sooo into wrestling back then.

  • My NES was hooked up to a B&W TV when I was playing through this game. Problem here is that the pickups were identical, put palette swapped so good ones and bad ones had different colors. Good times.

  • The classic. Great game because the controls and goal are perfectly intuitive so you can play with non-gamers very easily.

  • DW rules

  • All little kids should beat back a few commies.
