Quiting WoW Again.

Before it had always been because I'd stopped having fun.  This time marks the first time I've ever quit over Blizzard policy.  It's a shame, WoW is still a great game, but the new Real ID policy is such a clear violation of common sense privacy rules that I don't want my money to imply that I tolerate it.

Ancients of Ooga Wasn't Bad

The game dragged on a little long and the puzzles never get hard.  It's cute and kind of funny in a couple places There are 2 sections that try your platforming, but compared to games like N+ or 'Splosion Man it's nothing hard.  But it's easy to get the full 100% and the avatar awards are good too.  I would have liked it if some of the puzzle had actually been challenging, or if the combat were just a tad better.  I get that fighting isn't what the game is about, but when they penalize you for dying (reward you for not dying actually), it'd be nice to get a little warning before the ultra-fast enemies charge you and juggle you to death.

Super Meat Boy Hype Machine

Having not yet played Super Meat Boy, I can't say if it's good or bad.  I own both N+ and 'Splosion Man, so I certainly hope to enjoy it.  However one thing I can say is the developers are super-aces at PR.  They have a seriously honed hype-machine going full bore for SMB.  I personally think they could make a business out of promoting other people's games.  The T-shirts and comics, and guest appearances in SMB from other indie favorite characters.  I'm not slighting the two of them, they seem very passionate and knowedgable about games.  And when you have a small game like that, nobody id]s going to push it for you.  I'm just impressed at home good them are at it (assuming it works and the game sells well).

Sites That Don't Provide Any External Links

More and more, various specialist news blogs are providing no external links for news stories.  In itself this isn't necessarily terrible, but they always have links included, they just go to the site you are already on.  This drives me nuts, and I've seen it done when the only article you'll get referred to is the one you are reading.  "Google issued a press release" link goes to all articles on the site tagged with "Google".  I get that you need traffic, but there is a base level of service I demand from internet journalists.  When your source is so readily available and can help inform your readers, you are doing them a disservice by making them track it down.  I find that Gawker sites are prime examples of this practice.

The New Way to Conjugate Verbs

One mixed blessing of the internet is that irregular verbs are being regulated.  As somebody who knows how they should be used, it pains me, but I recognize that ultimately it will lead to a simpler language. Here are some of the ones I see the most.

  • Grinded: The (false) claim is that grinding in a game has some different meaning than before and so deserves a new form.  It is patently untrue.
  • Hitted
  • Casted
  • Finded
So in the interest of a more accessible English language, large software makers like Blizzard have an obligation to make all irregular verbs relevant to play.

First Posts

I think forums should be about communication.  So one of my least favorite kinds of post is the "first post".  Anybody who does this is saying to me "I have nothing to say but I really want you to listen to me".  If I ran a forum, it would be a perma-ban offense.

Kind of Forum Jerk

There are about a million ways people can be jerks on forums, if you want to be conservative.  One of my personal favorites is the person who has to respond even if they have no interest in the subject.  "Which team do you hope wins the <whatever tournament>"?  "I hate <sport you like>"

Duplicate Threads

When people on forums complain that a thread already exists to talk about something.  Any subject worth discussing usually jumps to multiple pages very fast.  There is a good chance that anything not on the first or last pages won't get read.  In some cases, like where moderators are trying to get information out of posts, I think it makes some sense.  But normally I think starting new posts is just fine.

Problems With Rock Band

In general I love Rock Band and Rock Band 2.  In fact, if they fixed the two issues I'm about to mention, I wouldn't feel the need for anything else in RB3.
However, there are 2 things I consider serious flaws that I don't understand why they were not addressed for RB2.  If they are not fixed, I will not be staying with the series.

  • Money vs Difficulty: There is no scaling of cash.  You get no more money for playing a song on Hard than on Medium.  I find it almost impossible to make myself work hard to pass songs on Hard when the reward is only fans and achievement progress.  The hardest Medium song is easier than the easiest hard song, so why do I get a fraction of the money for finally managing to beat it.  It feels like an insult. Like the game is saying my managing this feat is worth trivial.
  • DLC in Career:  DLC and imported tracks are never picked as songs you have to play in career.  With so much DLC, most series veterans have quite a library of tracks they have downloaded.  And the game's set list is rather eclectic so it is not uncommon for people to not love every song that comes with it.  And since you by definition have to pay for DLC the chances are you like you DLC tracks a lot more on average.  And you can also selectively delete imported RB1 songs so there is no reason to have unliked songs there either.  But you are still stuck playing the same core RB2 songs over and over as you progress.
