Comment On Thailand's Banning of GTA4

Now, I am a South East Asian/American (mostly Lao/Thai, i cant really tell since parents and ancestors keep migrating places to places back when they used to live there) and was very surprised to see Thailand grab headlines. I'm proud of who i am and where I'm from but being born and raised in America has made me American, and .. yeah.. duh..

Enough about that. About 4 years ago when i was in 8th grade i had a chance to visit Tha

iland. On that trip i traveled on a bus, crossed the Mei Kong river for a few minutes, and stayed a while in Cambodia with relatives. It was eye opening and a little surprising. Bottom line: It's third-world. Of course i knew that before hand, but seeing the people is really a different thing. People outside America simply are not Americans! i know as simple and stupid that sounds its really amazing. The country is pretty corrupt alright, but I didn't really see that since i was a tourist.

Now the criticisms a lot of people are having towards Era Interactive Media and the country in general are quite valid. I totally agree that they shouldn't blame the game and that banning it isn't really going to fix much, since there is so much other crap going on there with or without the influence of the game. But something does not sit right with me when it comes to the criticisms.  I would make the same criticisms but it seems like people are looking at the story without really taking considerations for how it is over there, how the people are, and how different it is from America. If the game was banned in a state in America, I'd be all with everyone else, but the fact is that it is not America. While all human beings act stupid and do stupid things in some way or another, Americans do seem to be in their own world ( because i sure am :D ).
This is a random Thai Taxi. Not sure if what kind of taxi the murder took place in.

I guess my main argument for why it is kind of justified yet not or why it just does not sit right with me is that over there its the wild west.  Sure there is a Government and law enforcement, but since things are so corrupt, justice is questionable.  My feeling is that that dumb impressionable murderer actually felt like he could get away with it. He said that he wanted to see if it was as easy to get away with it as it is in the game, and i bet it is actually pretty easy to get away with it over there.  It's easy to do anything over there.  And I'm not really exactly sure if that's enough to justify them pulling it off the shelves! it isn't! I'm pretty goddammed sure that the parents over there could care less about it because they're much too busy worrying about other things (unlike over here, where  parents go crazy), so it isn't even to please them! I am so confused about how i feel about it.

In the end here's what we learned
  • Thailand's a third world country and is not America.
  • I'm an American Snob just as the next guy.
  • I appreciate the people who feel sorry for the gamers in Homeland country/place.
  • People who criticize Thailand and get the wrong Idea and perception about the country, you're probably right! But try to understand there's much more to it.

So much work for something that's going to be barely read... Whoever is listening though, thank you and add me as a friend :D. (going through this text wall of crap is a commendable thing)
