Puyo Puyo Champions is a competitive-focused entry in the long running Puyo Puyo series. As it is missing nearly all single-player modes besides basic CPU battles, the game's primary focus is promoting competitive Puyo in Japan and the rest of the world.

New features include an offline Tournament mode featuring up to eight human or CPU players battling it out in a single-elimination bracket, a Boost mode that grants various buffs to a player behind in a set, and several quality-of-life features making it easier for spectators to follow the action during a match.

This game marks the first home console appearance of several characters from the smartphone game Puyo Puyo!! Quest, and is the first HD Puyo Puyo game to feature the Fever game mode.

Patch 1.03 introduced single-player challenge modes in which the player is either given an allotted time to obtain as many points as possible or attempts to make it to a specific point value as quickly as possible.
