Location » linked to 10 games

Home to less than sixty police officers, not including the Special Forces and the S.T.A.R.S., the Raccoon Police Department is the first major locale presented in Resident Evil 2.

    Short summary describing this location.

The Raccoon Police Department (R.P.D.) is a major locale featured in the Resident Evil series of video games. It first appears in Resident Evil 2, has a small role in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and is featured during one of the scenarios in Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2.

    Background

The building that stood as the Raccoon Police Department at the time of Raccoon City's destruction had been originally constructed as the city's library in the late 1970's, giving explanation to the structure's massive size that accommodates a rather small police force.

In the early 90's, the building became the Raccoon Police Department after the library was shut down for unknown reasons. Police Chief Brian Irons--a lover of art, architectural or otherwise--refused to allow the building to become a hallowed shell of what it had once been, and talked the mayor into contracting it as a police headquarters.

Despite the rather small police presence in Raccoon City, most of the building was used for proper reasons. Press rooms, filing areas and detective offices were scattered through the building in an effort to not let any part of it go to waste. The few rooms of the building that were not used were located on the top floor, and were removed to bring on the implementation of a helipad.

The implementation of the task force S.T.A.R.S. gave Irons excuse enough to turn his office over to the group and move his personal affects into a storage room that he used to store the mass amounts of art and taxidermy he had collected with unknown wealth.

    The Raccoon City Outbreak

Hours into the Raccoon City outbreak of the T-Virus, the police force attempted to regain control of the city and destroy the oncoming assailants using unprecedented force. Not understanding their enemies, the majority of their ammo was wasted on the virus carriers, most hits landing in the abdominal regions rather than quick shots to the head. Most of Raccoon's police officers died on the streets along with the civilians that they were sworn to protect.

The few officers remaining in the R.P.D. Headquarters were forced to barricade themselves inside, boarding up doors and windows through the station. Brian Irons chose this as the perfect time to go completely senile, and he began working against his cops, scattering ammunition and other commodities across the station before sealing himself in his office for the vast remainder of the incident.

With their chief losing his mind, the remaining police were lead by Marvin Branagh. Branagh's forces were able to secure transport out of the city, but Branagh himself became infected and elected to stay behind.

    Resident Evil 2

As part of the special forces within the R.P.D., Leon Kennedy instructs Claire Redfield to meet him at the police station when they're separated. The station turns out to not be quite as safe as he had hoped, though it's quite obviously more safe than wandering through the streets of Raccoon City.

Claire Redfield has several encounters with the senile Brian Irons, who attempts to kill her before being mercilessly slaughtered by the G-Mutant William Birkin, ultimately ending his reign of terror over the abandoned structure.

As Irons had been in league with Umbrella for quite some time, many key pieces to accessing Umbrella's facility were hidden through the station, their locations known only to the chief. Leon and Claire are able to locate them and access the sewer entrance to Umbrella's laboratory, concealed by the R.P.D.

    Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

In a portion of the game that takes place prior to Resident Evil 2, Jill Valentine enters the police station is search of Brad Vickers. When Brad is murdered outside the building by Nemesis, Jill locks herself inside the building and heads for the S.T.A.R.S. Office, where she makes first contact with Carlos Oliveira.

During the game's ending cinematic, the building is shown briefly before an explosion consumes it.
