Overview
Ratchet & Clank was released on April 12, 2016 in NA and the following weeks for PAL and UK. The game is a full re-imagining of the titular Ratchet & Clank from the PlayStation 2, and was well received by critics as a whole. The rebooted game exhibits fully recreated planets, re-imagined controls, as well as story-related cutscenes from the accompanying movie, which encompasses the major details of the plot.
The game features many familiar elements to the original release, from the main story, down to locations of hidden golden bolts, to Easter Egg characters. Many of the planets are designed very similarly to the source material, in both aesthetic as well as gameplay wise, but there's also a long list of details that were cut to create a more smooth experience for the player
Storyline
The story opens with a flashback of Shiv Helix being walked to a prison cells while enduring the verbal barrage of his accompanying guards. He is taken to his cell, where he is left in the presence of Captain Qwark, a hero/villain of the original series. The prisoner is enamored to meet the famous Quark, who is the leader and most prolific of the Galactic Rangers. Helix exclaims that he ordered the new Holovid game and Qwark pouts in response, remarking that he has never had a chance to tell his side of the story.
Quark, as the narrator, begins to retell the story of Ratchet. Ratchet is a down-on-his-luck Lombax who lives on Veldin. He works as a mechanic under Grim, while dreaming of one day joining the Galactic Rangers. Convenient enough, the Rangers are holding tryouts on Veldin, which Ratchet manages to not only attend, but also pass with ease. After quickly finishing the physical trials, he is denied a chance by Qwark himself after being read his extensive criminal history.
There are a few moments outright homages to the Ratchet & Clank, including the plumber, who is back.
Development
Originally set for release in 2015, Sony announced on May 13, 2015 that the game was being delayed to Spring 2016.
