Red Faction

Set on Mars in the near future, Red Faction is a first-person shooter developed by Volition. It follows the fight of miners against the oppressive Ultor corporation and features dynamic destructible environments.

Concepts

Aerial Combat

When fighting is no longer relegated to the ground, but can also take place in the air.
Alternate Fire

A secondary function for a single weapon, such as launching a grenade from a rifle.
Auto-Aim

Auto-aiming (or Auto-targeting) allows for a character to attack or interact with an object or enemy that's very near to the player or within their field of vision.
Barricade

Whether you're trying to stay alive for a certain time period or just trying to gain the upper hand in a fight, being able to make a barricade is crucial to your survival.
Bink Video

A proprietary video codec (.bik extension) developed by RAD Game Tools and used in a very large number of video games.
Blood

Necessary to sustain life in organic creatures, the crimson fluid known as blood tends to make appearances when the body's structure is compromised in some way, a very, very common occurrence in videogames.
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Breakable Glass

Glass that can be broken and destroyed in real-time.
Capture The Flag

A game in which the object is to capture and return the opponents flag to your base. Typically used in multiplayer first-person shooter games.
Chemical Warfare

Chemical weapons are weapons who use chemical products to obtain various detrimental effects.
Corruption

The act of a noble, just, or otherwise good or heroic figure becoming evil through either external manipulation or an internal shift in beliefs or desires.
Crosshair

A sight placed on the HUD used to aim and provide a point of reference to the player when looking and interacting with the game world. Although they often aim weapons, they have a variety of uses and have appeared in many games in many different forms.
Crouching

Crouching is an essential part of many shooters and plastformers, and can be useful to stay under cover and avoiding incoming projectiles
Cutscene

A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
Deathmatch

A gameplay mode that pits two or more players in a fight to the death. John Romero is credited with coining the multiplayer term "deathmatch."
Destructible Cover

Destructible cover is an increasingly popular gameplay element in shooters, uniting destructible environments with cover mechanics to discourage overly defensive play. Just like you, that piece of concrete isn't going to last forever.
Destructible Environment

A destructible environment means the player has the ability to destroy his/her surroundings. This allows players to use the environment to their advantage.
Difficulty Level

Sometimes you want a challenge, sometimes you wanna coast.
Direct2Drive

Digital distribution method for PC games. Direct2Drive is maintained and owned by Gamefly Digital Inc.
Disguise

Generally used to fool other characters or parties into thinking you're one of them or belong there for purposes of deception, spying, or accessing data.
Drilling

Sometimes you need to crush a little rock to gain access to valuable objects - or even to find your way out of a sticky situation. The drill is your friend.
Dystopian World

Any game that represents a society noticeably worse or less desirable compared to those in the present. This can relate to kinds of political and economic organisation, excessive human suffering, social problems caused by technology, or as a result of an apocalyptic event.

Energy Weapons

Any weapon that shoots laser and plasma beams or energy bolts rather than conventional bullets.
Environment as Weapons

The ability for players to manipulate objects in the environment and use them as weapons. The most obvious example of this gameplay mechanic is Half-Life 2, in which players make use of a Gravity Gun to launch objects with deadly force.
Evil Organization

An evil organization is a group of super-villans who are hell bent on world domination or something of a similar nature. Usually defeated by a single Spy/Superhero/Average Joe/small child.
Exploding Vehicles

In real life, vehicles rarely explode unless an actual explosive device is involved. Like, it almost never happens. In video games, on the other hand, cars will blow up real good with almost no encouragement.
Explosion

A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
Final Boss

The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
