DeathSpank Review

DeathSpank can be very charming, but it's rarely much more than that.

DeathSpank's flat visual style makes it all look kind of quaint, like the entire game was shot on a soundstage.
DeathSpank's flat visual style makes it all look kind of quaint, like the entire game was shot on a soundstage.
DeathSpank is a quick and light little piece of action-RPG excitement from Hothead Games, the crew that developed the Penny Arcade Adventures series. While it's an uneven experience, the action works well enough and the game's sense of humor hits often enough to make it come together pretty well. Unfortunately, it also gets a bit monotonous, largely due to some repetitive quest design.

The game opens at what looks like the end of the titular hero's quest. DeathSpank has been looking for "The Artifact" for a very long time, and you essentially get it near the end of the game's first section. But that's, obviously, just the beginning. Before long you'll be on the hunt for missing orphans, chasing after the orcs that ganked your artifact, and generally side-questing your ass off as you go. DeathSpank is written as a comedy, and most of its best stuff comes from things like item descriptions or occasional lines of dialogue from the nondescript characters you'll encounter along the way. The game seems like it's always trying to slide something funny your way, but most of it didn't click with me at all... though I can always appreciate a good Usenet reference.

The writing is wrapped around a fairly standard action-RPG framework with some extra streamlining done to keep things moving. You won't need to sell loot in towns--instead you can just toss any extra items you have into "the grinder," an item in your inventory that turns loot into cash that you can then spend on... well, I think I only bought like two things over the course of the game. There isn't necessarily a ton of different loot, either, so rather than poring over your slots to make sure you're properly equipped, it's more about finding gear that has a higher level requirement, since that'll automatically be better than lower level gear. It's telling that the game has an "always equip best armor" option and that it works quite well. When you level up, you'll also get to pick a "hero card" than enhances one of your traits, like melee damage or movement speed. This gives you ways to sort of customize your character, but by the end of the game you'll have just about all of them. Don't go in expecting a full skill tree or especially meaningful decisions about the development of your DeathSpank.

DeathSpank is a champion of justice... and a serial chicken murderer.
DeathSpank is a champion of justice... and a serial chicken murderer.
You can equip four weapons at a time, and most of the weapons are melee-based. I kept one crossbow equipped at all times for ranged attacks, and then slotted my three most powerful weapons in the other spaces. These slots map to your face buttons, and the game has a combo system that makes having multiple weapons equipped meaningful. When you switch from one weapon to the next, a multiplier increases and a meter for your special attacks fills more rapidly. Some special attacks can be combined, provided you have the right weapons equipped. If you get the multiplier up to seven--not an especially challenging task--you'll knock enemies back, clearing some room. You can also queue up a few support items on the D-pad, giving you fast access to health potions, food, and other status effects.

All the while, you'll be taking on various quests. Some, like gathering up a bunch of missing orphans, are primary quests that must be completed. But there are plenty of optional quests, as well. Most of them feel like they boil down to "go here and get this item" or "go here and kill this thing." One particularly glaring bit of repetitiveness has you fetching items for a talking tree. While the quest dialogue is actually great for this entire chain, all of the items are found on a main road to the west of the tree. Since you'll have already cleared out most of this area, there are few enemies to fight... you just walk back and forth to grab items for five or 10 minutes. Maybe that's supposed to be part of the joke? If it were stretched out across a longer game, DeathSpank's quests and writing would work a bit better. But crammed into the five-and-a-half hours it took me to reach 100-percent completion, it's easier to recognize the same tricks being thrown at you again and again.

While the game is fine to play alone, there's also an asymmetrical co-op option in DeathSpank. A second player can play as a wizard named Sparkles, who can cast a few spells to help DeathSpank, but isn't really much of a character on his own. He doesn't advance in level or have his own inventory, but his spells automatically scale to match DeathSpank's current level. It feels like the sort of thing that's designed for parents who want to lend their kids a bit of a hand when playing through the game, like Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Even without an abundance of the "loot lust" that usually drives action-RPGs, DeathSpank has a hook that makes you want to keep playing it. But that alone doesn't make it a fantastic game. Its moments of brilliance are usually directly offset by its shortcomings. But if you aren't especially picky and you're on the hunt for something new to play during these slow summer months, DeathSpank's good enough to fit the bill.

After playing Monkey Island 1 and 2 recently, I'm surprised that some aspects are missing from this review. It kinda reads more like a wiki page, discussing the various mechanics, completely ignoring some aspects. Specifically, a discussion of the music and any interactivity or blending across areas like in MI2. The music in Secret and the imuse system in LeChuck's Revenge are a big part of why those games are a triumph. I'm also kinda bummed to not hear any discussion of how Ron's 2D art choice panned out. He believes that 2D art is ahead of 3D, and he's right, but I really wanted to know how it comes across. Same with the WoW-esque use of different palettes for different zones. Also missing is voice acting, something that was discussed in the bombcast, but not here strangely. Also missing is a comment on the length of the game. I realize that it took Jeff 5 hours, but what I'm wondering is what is there to actually extend that experience. Are the people who took longer experiencing repeated dialogue trees and extra grinding, or are they just slower readers?

I'm not trying to say Giantbomb reviews should be like GamePro (WHAT'S THE FUN FACTOR? 4?) but it would be nice to touch on all aspects of a game.

Yikes. I played through it. It's a much more enjoyable experience with co-op than single player. The comedy is cleverly written but it's not for everyone. Like how some people could like Simpsons and Futurama, but hate Family Guy or South Park or visa verse.

I dunno what everyones gripe is on his name. I think it's supposed to be stupid. Just look at the guy his legs can barely hold him up.

Oh well is it worth $15? I think it was but that depends on the person. Do I think Limbo is worth $15? lol hell no not by a long shot.

I'm not going to be "that duder" and just jump into Giant Bomb apologist mode without having played the game but there's nothing wrong with how this review is written. I mean if you think Deathspank is the funniest thing ever that's your opinion or if you think the humor is outdated that's your opinion too. Games that put too many eggs in that basket tend to be either loved or hated so it's actually nice to see that Jeff thought enough of the mechanics to put this game somewhere in the middle.

I definitely want to buy this game. I've never played one of his creations before and figured this would be a place to start with.

Cool game. I think I got 10 hours or more out of the game. It was kinda repetitive at some point, but it was funny! :)

based on my short experience with the game i'd have to agree completely with jeff's review. the game always feels like it's trying to be funny, but it usually isn't. as he said, still a decent option for someone looking for something to play during the slow summer.

I've put in about 11 hours so far into this game and I think I'll be done with it around the 13 hour mark. All-in-all it's been $15 very well spent in my opinion.

I think the game is fantastic and I'm looking forward to hopefully many more downloadable titles that have a similarly high level of quality. The humor may not be laugh out loud funny at all times and over time it can feel a little "workmanlike" but there are some genuinely funny moments.  Like another dude posted it's remarkable that this game is fully voiced. The writing is excellent and I just love how the game refuses to take itself seriously. The developers worked the hell out of that "the joke's on us" and silly overused game conventions angle and I think they executed very well on that front.

The art style is beautiful and like others have stated, the 2D trees on a 3D surface give it a really cool pop-art visual.

It's a pretty simple game, granted, but it's a welcome diversion -- on this one point, Jeff and I agree. But for $15 I wasn't expecting Fallout 3 action rpg depth.

I find it weird that Jeff didn't talk about the look of the game.  I find that it is one of the more interesting parts of the game.  Though at times the mobs don't stand out from the environmental, making them hard to see.
As far as the comedy goes,  I found that most of the humor is in exploring every dialog option.  If you ake the time you will enjoy the game more,  something I think Jeff might have missed due to him needing to finish the game as fast as he can.  (you don't need to hear every bit of dialog to get 100%)

For some reason I though Brad was going to be reviewing this one.   Jeff seems kind of down on it, but I get the impression he didn't really want to enjoy it.  Nevertheless, 3 stars is a soft recommend and I can't wait to play through Deathspank.

Frankly, it doesn't even seem like Jeff LIKES games anymore.  At least ones that aren't exclusive to 360 and don't fit into a certain exact mold he is looking for.  He seems rather glum about most things anymore.  Maybe it's time for him to move on to management type roles and get away from the "drudgery" of playing and reviewing games.

Finished this game last night, this review is pretty spot-on except it took me longer to finish it and it doesn't mention the music, which I was surprised that I enjoyed as much as I did, the way it picks up when a bunch of dudes are running at you is just delightful.

The humor was sort of hit and miss but I did chuckle at a few item descriptions and dialouge options throughout it (My favorite item description is the one for "Ninja Ring" because it took me a while to get it).

Can't say that I'm exited for a sequel or anything but I don't regret my time spent with it.
