DmC Devil May Cry Review

5
  • X360
  • PS3

The character action genre hasn't been this stylish or crazy in a good long while.

There's enough combat variety here to support multiple playthroughs.
There's enough combat variety here to support multiple playthroughs.

The reborn Devil May Cry from Ninja Theory exemplifies what it is to really get down in the dirt and reimagine a hallowed franchise from the ground up, bringing back only the broadest character traits and relationships but leaving behind everything else about the old that gets in the way of creating a singular, cohesive new. Names like Dante, Vergil, and Mundus return, but the world they inhabit and the roles they play out are only passingly similar to what you knew of them before. Everything in this new game exists in service of making it a great game in its own right, not in stoking your nostalgia for the games you played over the last decade. As a character action game, it hits all the notes--fast, robust action, marvelous visual style, and a tremendous sense of attitude--you could want in this type of game.

To be fair, on paper, everything about Devil May Cry sounds like the tritest video game pap: a bloody war between angels and devils, endless hordes of demonic enemies straight from your favorite '80s heavy metal album art, and all of it punctuated by Scandinavian "hellektro" outfit Combichrist's thudding soundtrack. And then there's Dante, remade in the image of a club-kid layabout who's so sneeringly self-satisfied he defies any attempt you might make to identify with him. I pretty much went into the game consciously expecting to hate all of this, or at least view it as the sort of eye-rolling embarrassment video games are usually so good at delivering.

Then, oddly, I started feeling a guilty pleasure at how much I was actually enjoying the spectacle. Then later I gave up the guilt and just flung myself wholeheartedly into the cyclone of nonsense. I think it became easy to like Devil May Cry because it seems somewhat aware of itself; the game is so damn committed to having fun with its absurdity, you can't help having fun along with it. Dante may be a smirking wiseass, but his lines are witty enough and delivered with so much panache, you quickly grow to like him anyway. And he makes a great foil for his brother Vergil, who's more of an uppity, refined ideologue fighting the good fight against the demons. Dante talks a constant stream of shit to Vergil and just about anyone else who gets in his way, and there's something uncomfortable and a little dissonant about a 50-foot ancient grub-demon screeching "FUCK YOOOOOUUUUU!!!" right back at him. The best sort of dumb fun is the kind that knows how dumb it is, and I consistently got the sense from Devil May Cry knew that the entire time I was playing it.

When acting is required, it's amazing how effective real actors can be.
When acting is required, it's amazing how effective real actors can be.

The game also knows when to rein it in, though. After the dramatic triumph of Ninja Theory's last game, Enslaved, it shouldn't surprise you that I'm back to devote another paragraph to the characters' performances in this game, which do so much to sell what, again, probably should have been a complete joke of a storyline. Where Enslaved had a lot of heart, Devil May Cry offers an equal amount of middle finger, but it still manages to lend an appreciable level of gravitas and some occasional poignance to its tale of saving the world from demons who have enslaved the human race with... soda. As before, the success at selling you on the plot simply comes down to all the subtle eye movements and shoulder shrugs and skilled line reads that add up to real, believable performances, the kind of thing you get when you go into a performance-capture facility and fill it with people who can, you know, act. That the characters here do so much to uplift Devil May Cry's ridiculous premise is a testament to both the capability of performance-capture technology and Ninja Theory's use of it.

Lest we forget this is also a video game: Devil May Cry is in fact a greatly entertaining character action game, as fast-paced and diverse as I could have wanted. The game starts you off with Dante's familiar sword and dual pistols, but you quickly start to collect angel and demon weapons, which fill light and heavy attack categories respectively. Switching between melee weapons, and the three firearms you end up with, just takes a tap of the d-pad. You only have a single attack button which wields your sword by default, and you switch to the equipped angel or devil weapon instantly by holding the left or right trigger and hitting that same button. The game finds a lot of interesting ways to make you stay on your toes, with enemies that only fully coalesce when one type of weapon is equipped, or floors that will hurt you if you aren't holding the same-colored weapon. More importantly, if you're quick enough, it's possible to involve three, four, or five different weapons in a single combo, and the game is constantly running a tally on the side of the screen rating how stylishly you're fighting, all the way up to triple-S.

The more style you rack up, the more new abilities and moves you can unlock (from a list of dozens), and since you lose a couple of letter grades every time you get hit, you're really incentivized to play as cleanly as possible. The combat isn't overwhelmingly hard on the default difficulty, though it isn't a cakewalk, but if you're really serious about this kind of game, play it on hard from the outset. There are another four difficulty levels waiting for you to unlock them after that. The game is built to be replayed repeatedly; you can jump back into any mission on any difficulty whenever, and there are plenty of places you just can't access without the right abilities the first time through. All of your completion totals get rated and slapped onto leaderboards if you want to keep up with how your friends are doing. In short, the between-mission trappings, the glue that holds the levels themselves together, feel thoroughly modern in this game.

The inventive visual and level design just keeps on coming.
The inventive visual and level design just keeps on coming.

Since all the action takes place in a demonic mirror world called Limbo, the designers get to go wild with the sorts of places you're fighting in, and the game is constantly turning your expectations (and the levels) upside down by placing you in skewed, exploded, or otherwise deconstructed versions of city streets, mansions, night clubs, and a few more unlikely environments I'll leave to you to discover. While this sort of level design has started to feel a little played out since games like American McGee's Alice made it popular ages ago, I was constantly surprised and delighted by the sheer, over-the-top inventiveness of the levels in this game. There's also a degree of grappling-hook-style traversal, and a few creative moments that emphasize the relationship between Limbo and the real world, that make the game feel like more than a constant stream of enemy encounters. And the game is absolutely awash in dazzling visual presentation. I won't go too deep into that, because it's better absorbed firsthand, but the broad and ever-changing color palette, the ways the level geometry explodes and deforms around you, the titles and overlays that pop up on the screen to enhance the action, all combine to make this game a great venue for its artists to display their talents.

I brought no personal baggage to Ninja Theory's take on Devil May Cry, having played and enjoyed the original game way back when but then steering clear of the series after its poorly received second entry. Whether you're a longtime fan (with an open mind) or a total newcomer just looking for a solid character action game, it's hard to imagine anyone feeling overly dissatisfied with this new game. It's almost wholly successful at what it tries to do, and seems like the start of a promising new direction for what was otherwise a nearly forgotten franchise.

A long and in-depth argument for why this game is objectively worse than past DMCs, for anyone with interest.

Hopefully we can all get back to talking about Silky the Fairy and chemtrails now that DmC is old news...

Oh my god. This has gotten out of fucking hand. People are writing essays because somebody liked a thing too much. If you are mad at Brad because he likes DmC, you're singlehandedly setting video games back decades. You're worse than that blood-soaked porn statue from earlier today, and that thing was horrid.

@EnduranceFun: how does the angel/demon weapon system not lend itself to strategic and skillful gameplay? the game throws multiple enemies at you of different types with different abilities and weakeesses and killing them ass quickly and efficiently as possible isn't a matter of button mashing. the posts you so inelegantly provided(a giant image seriously that's the best you could do?) completely dismiss the system without any reasoning or justification.

Oh, don't worry, I read them. Taken on their own, they are an impassioned and informed discussion of an adamant opinion of the writer.

Taken in their proper context, however, as a person adamantly claiming another person's opinion is wrong, they become the rantings and ravings of a madman. See, I don't care that some people don't like DmC. I know there's nothing I could do to make those people enjoy this game. But for people to claim that Brad's opinion is objectively wrong is just too much. It's a particularly poisonous, virulent part of this video gaming subculture, and it really needs to be nipped in the bud whenever it rears its ugly head.

@PixelPrinny: Yes, they're the children, not the users talking about "epic win" and "salty tears" as if they were real.

Yes they are, for being so emotional over an entertainment product (also this isn't a binary thing - both parties are acting childish to me). Do they have a right to be upset for changes they disagree with and converse about it? Of course they do as they are invested in the franchise and discussion should always be encouraged. Is the extremes of opposition for an entertainment product (a type of luxury item) ever justified? No. It never really is. It makes people look childish every time people do this en masse. Then again I seem to be of a minority that wouldn't throw a controller out of anger, vocalise like a barbarian because of game changes I disagree with, or throw tantrums about subjective opinions that do not affect me at all. I must be a crazy person to always try and be rational and respectful apparently. Also be aware I'm talking about the majority of nay-sayers but not all as there's clearly people who are criticising properly and respectfully, yet are tricky to spot within the sea of irrational comments.

Game looks fun and I'll pick it up eventually, as I love the level designs that I saw in the game so far, as well as the overall style of the game throughout. The story definitely looks dumb but I've played far worse things. Not a fan of the main character but I'm not a sensitive nancy to let that ruin what looks like will be a fun experience.

This is a good review from the average gamer or general game enthusiast mindset. Hardcore fans that need a review that caters to their needs really should look elsewhere as they shouldn't be expecting specialist DMC opinions from the staff. That's like getting angry about them sharing opinions of scrolling shooter games when they haven't satisfied a hardcore condition of beating the classics with one credit or something, to prove to people that do not matter in the grand scale of things that they know what they're talking about. At some point that is asking too much of game reviewers that look at many games and not just a small subset or single genre.

Combichrist is some good stuff. you know, if you're in the mood for it. some of the early stuff is almost not even music if that makes any sense but still good.

Don't worry about it. I guess most people didn't, until Combichrist was the opening act for Rammstein (you probably heard of them, yeah?). They get around. And they're probably one of the more accessible acts, too.

@ZeroV2: That's EXACTLY the reason you don't let someone with a biased view on the series review the game, because it's not fair. Watch the quick look, the harder modes are really hard. And who gives a DAMN about if it's identical to the series. It's the game designers who make the game, not its fans. Brad thought this game was good in it's own right and guess what, many others agree. You either like the game or you don't. If you want to play the old school DMC then go play that? Problem solved.

I was going to pass on this game, till I saw Brad's review. Spent my last $60 of Christmas cash on it, and do I regret it? Turns out no, I actually had fun playing this game, and I only played Devil May Cry 4 before, which I sorta disliked because it add me go back track through levels but as Dante, after I did them as Nero. What I enjoyed was the art style, the way the levels shifted in Limbo, and I loved the combat system, I just can't understand how some people are still so negative about it, I myself liked the reboot, and that is my opinion, but I think It was well done and should be given a chance.

DMC is the Diablo 3 of 2013. It got good reviews but at the end of the year it will be on zero top 10 best games lists and most people will pretend/wish it never came out.

What's the moral of the story? Never trust a Brad or reviewers in general. Find one or two guys who have similar tastes to yours.

@Alkaiser: Stop thinking of five stars as a perfect score then. These aren't letter grades and a review isn't a math test. Five stars means the reviewer really enjoyed playing the game. four stars means the reviewer enjoyed playing the game but there were things that made him enjoy it less. Three stars means there are good and bad things about this game in equal measure, Either really high highs and really low lows or an overall really middling meh affair. It is an opinion based off of the experience of a single person. When you read the review you learn about the experience of the reviewer and a little bit about the quality of the game. Brad didn't think he was going to like the story but it seems despite himself he did. He acknowledges it is dumb but not all dumb stories are bad.

Taken from someone with an incredible love for the series:

This is a great video game but everything about it outside of the gameplay mechanics is awful. Embarrassingly awful. There's an entire conversation of two characters yelling "Fuck you!" at one another. I can't even call that dialogue.Your mileage and enjoyment of the game will depend almost 100% on how much you can tolerate the "attitude" of the game.

Brad says he gave in, so he loved it. Adam Sessler did not, so...

Side note: I've never agreed with a review more.

And lastly, to everyone who has such strong opinions on how the game should be, and how to fix it, or make a better game in general, I ask you prove it. Become a developer, independent or otherwise. Make your masterpieces. Show everyone what a great game really is. It's a lot harder to create something great yourself than it is to tear something down someone else made.

You know, I agree with most of what you said but this has to be the worst line of logic that ever comes up in a thread.

You defy people to go ahead and do something that not only requires years of practice and training, but to try do it in a way that would be as good (actually better in this context) as something created by professionals; people with years or even decades of experience in their career and multi-millions of dollars in backing that allows them to devote thousands of hours - hundreds of thousands of man hours combined - to the task, as well as acquire the often prohibitively expensive third party tools required.

Sure, if they don't like a game and would prefer it had been made different they should just go change careers, train in a dozen art and programming tools to a level where they can compete with a full AAA studio, and devote years upon years to proving their point and showing the world - especially this website and it's forums users - that yes, they were right. They would have enjoyed it more if it had been made the way they hoped it would be.

All of that to justify having an opinion on something they don't enjoy or don't like, or would have been more fond of if changes X or Y had been made.

Those actions are rational and not at all the course of the frothingly insane.

You shouldn't be required to prove that you, personally, could do something better in order to have an opinion on it. Strong, passionate, negative, or otherwise.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that outline. Again, I bring up Fable 3. Got 3 stars, but would you really say that Fable 3 was fair to middling? From what I heard on the bombcast over the course of the month it came out, it sounded like everyone hated everything about it, including Brad who reviewed it. It eventually was summed up as "Don't play Fable 3" whenever anyone brought it up.

Again, I'm not going to bash anyone for any score they've given this game considering I haven't even played it nor do I see myself playing it in the near future what with a general disinterest in anything Ninja Theory does as well as a lack of time to play video games in general. And the criticism I would have about having a scoring system at all could be leveled at every video game website. But it feels like they play so fast and loose with it that I have no idea what meaning I'm supposed to evaluate from it because it seems to differ from person to person. One mans 3 stars could mean "Hey, this game has its flaws but I really enjoy it," or it could mean "This game had promise but is abominable to actually play and its a damn shame."

Hey Brad, I'm beginning to think that I don't like games that you give glowing reviews to.

That's why I love giantbomb.com

A long and in-depth argument for why this game is objectively worse than past DMCs, for anyone with interest.

Objectively? Objectively‽

Man, the more I hear things like this the more happy I get that this game exists the way it does and that Brad gave it such a good review. Jesus Christ.

I hope you Devil May Cry fans never get the game you want. You don't deserve it.

@Alkaiser: I didn't play fable 3 so I can't say how I feel about it but when you read Brad's review he talks about the enjoyable aspects of the game and then describes the issues the game had that made enjoying the good parts difficult. obviously he likes the humor and most of the story line but technical issues, design flaws and a tonal shift near the end of the game made the game a "hot mess." High highs for Brad and low lows that balanced out to a three star review score. Also the reason there is a large block of text associated with each review is so you can interpret the score. Or, like I do, ignore the score outright and just read the review.

Might check the demo out then. Good review.

I don't understand why people are skeptical about the idea of this game being really good or that it got such a good review. Just because it looks a certain way that doesn't appease to you, doesn't make it automatically suck. Did we forget not to judge a book (a game in this case) by it's cover? by it's trailer and demo? Seriously some of you people have yet to grow up, I mean it seems like a no brain-er to not judge something before actually playing it right? Yet some of you still do just that, ignoring any sense of logical reasoning, being stubborn, and refusing to accept that you could have been wrong. And are people still joining bandwagons that hate on games? Is it the "in" thing to hate on DMC? Some people hate the new image, sure but that doesn't mean you have to slander the game and ruin it for others.

I never was into the DMC series, until now, till this reboot came out. I love his character and just find it amusing, making the protagonist actually a bit more colorful than in the previous games, course that's from my speculation. Oh I like the new Dante, does that mean i'm immature and laugh/giggle at F bombs or any sort of other profanity?

NO

I just like him for who he is, he's a unique individual (no he is not emo, he's punk rock!) , which is nice compared to the recent batch of hardened, shaved and gritty muscular marine style protagonists. That's how I feel at least, because I tire of very serious protagonists. If you want to hate on the game, go ahead, but do it with yourself.

. earlier someone suggested the idea that Brad was paid off to write such a good review, I doubt that, compared to all the other review sites I have read/seen. There are some good writers/reviewers here.

Yeah, but again, I'm talking about the aftermath of the review. How on the podcast as soon as everyone got a chance to try it Fable 3 became this thing we don't talk about because holy shit is it bad. I keep hammering on this one because it sticks out the most in my mind, but I'm sure it isn't the only game where the reviewer('s) opinion drastically changes about it a while after the review goes up.

And yeah, I agree with you about how reading the content is much more important then the arbitrary score attached to it.

@YummyTreeSap: I don't know why this would make you feel anything. There are many attributes objectively worse, especially pertaining to the combat, when you compare DmC to its predecessors.

this isn't devil may cry or a devil may cry reboot. its an action game called DMC that just coincidentally happens to star a guy named dante. It has NOTHING to do with the original Devil May Cry series. This is an entirely new series, would have been a billion times better if it just had a different name. If this game would have still gotten 5/5 with a different name, then isn't this a perfect example how rebooting a game while keeping nothing from the original game that made it good is the dumbest idea ever. If this game can get 5/5 with that ridiculous objective flaw associated with it, then surely it would have survived with a different title and main character.

This should have been called Crazy Happy Ice Cream Adventure Surprise! It would have more to do with the actual game than "DMC"

Agreed. Capcom did the right thing with this franchise. It was dead in the water after the fourth game. So they freshened it up, gave it a new set of legs and a new head of hair. It was the only way to keep DmC relevant and more importantly, alive. Don't hate change, it can often be for the better.

How the fuck was it dead in the water? Can someone explain this one? People (who don't actually care about DMC) keep saying this with no back up. The last one was the best selling of the franchisee. It introduced a new big mechanic that could be greatly expanded on. And changed it's style mechanism for the better. So what needed to be freshened up? Level design? Thats really about it. Hell DMC4 still looks great and runs better then this new game.  The only reason there wasn't a DMC right after is because it's team among other Capcom employees went and made Dragons Dogma. There is no logical proof that DMC was a dead series. Hell, it didn't get the Megaman treatment, Virgil and Dante are in MvC3!

Really if you don't know shit about the series, maybe you shouldn't talk as if you do.

Firstly: How can a game both "keep nothing" from the original, and yet that game still "makes it good"? That's an impossible premise.

Secondly, I would wager that anyone unfamiliar with DmC that couldn't tell within 5 seconds of gameplay that it's part of the Devil May Cry series is, well, not very sharp. My damn mother, who has never picked up a gamepad in her life, recognised it was part of the series, and I haven't played any of the other Devil May Cry games in nearly 4 years.

Lastly: "If this game would have still gotten 5/5 with a different name, then isn't this a perfect example how rebooting a game while keeping nothing from the original game that made it good is the dumbest idea ever."

Are you kidding? Do you also think that they should have called Spiderman 3 something that has nothing to do with Spiderman? No, because that is literally the dumbest idea I have ever heard. You might as well flush money down the toilet.
