Robomodo was formed in 2007 by several members of EA Chicago, when Electronic Arts shuttered that studio. The co-founders were Josh Tsui (president), David Michicich (CEO and Creative Director), Peter Sauerbrei (CTO), Nick Ehrlich (COO), and Richard Ho.

Since their founding, the studio has served largely as a development house for new console entries in Activision's long running Tony Hawk franchise, replacing franchise creators Neversoft.

Robomodo's existence has been precarious from the start, as the commercial failure of its first title--the widely-panned Tony Hawk: Ride--forced massive layoffs merely six months after a round of hiring. In fact, the game performed so poorly that the studio was rumored to be abandoning the Tony Hawk franchise altogether. This proved to be untrue when, at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards, the studio announced it was working on an HD remake of early Tony Hawk titles. The game was released on July 18, 2012, to lukewarm reception.

Next, Robomodo forayed into mobile game development, releasing Hunger Games: Catching Fire Panem Run, Globber's Escape, and Monster Flash. Simultaneously, they began development on another Tony Hawk game in partnership with Disruptive Games. The game was revealed in comments made by Tony Hawk, himself, and was later unveiled with the name Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, marking a return to the "Pro Skater" sub-franchise after 13 years. The game was released on September 29, 2015, to poor reception.
