Huge updates, Small changes...
They made more animations to some cutscenes and included more sound effects, but the core gameplay is the same, chopping trees, fishing, cooking, fighting and everything else that can earn you money. In fact, even the quests, apart from some new ones, are exactly the same. Same here means that you can expect near 5~6 year old quests that's mainly collecting specific items or ingredients and delivering them to people. There are more, but most of them are for paying members only.
The whole game if on a free account can last from 5~15 hours depending on how much you rush your quests. On the free account, the world is around a third of what members have and you don't have access to some skills and items. Although it's free, the game just feels too much like a demo and tires quickly.
If you are a member, you get the whole open world with basically hundreds more to do. You can construct your own home, make better items and get a long list of quests that involves more than just collecting stuff. Paying can add around 30 or more hours of gameplay not to mention the fullscreen mode even though I don't mind playing it on an internet browser. However, paying $5 a month feels too much since you can play World of Warcraft for a month with $15 for over 3 times of what runescape has to offer.
It's great to see that Runescape tried to fix some major flaws in the game such as high level players hunting down unlucky newbies exploring in the wilderness (the wilderness is where people were allowed to PK each other). Now, they banned it since people used it to transfer items illegally. Despite everything they are doing, you'll most likely end up doing extremely repetitive labor like cutting trees, mining and fishing all day long.
It’s recommendable for people looking for something more than a flash game, but not for anyone looking for a good game.
