Rubin embarrassed by by Saint's Row the Third?

I was really excited for THQ after hearing the Jason Rubin interview that was on gamespot the other day. By man, if Rubin trys to reign in Saint's Row... i just don't know...

I'm all for trying to imporve the company and do better and aim higher but I feel a lot of SR3 shouldn't be considered unworthy because its crazy. The game could be improved sure, but not because of content.

EDIT: Rubin has come out and said that his remarks where misinterpreted.

If he ruins Saints Row The Fourth, fuck that guy. Why change a winning formula because you'd be embarrassed to play it? It sold for a reason and was critically acclaimed for a reason. Don't fuck it up.

#3 Posted by MrKlorox (11142 posts) -

It embarrasses me too. Not the fact that you do dumb shit in the game, but the fact that it's perceived as a good game. That embarrasses me as a gamer.

#4 Posted by Dallas_Raines (2269 posts) -

That fucker made Way of the Warrior and Crash Bandicoot and he's "embarrassed" by Saint's Row? Jesus.

#5 Posted by AhmadMetallic (19303 posts) -

Great, another suit wanting to turn my video games into a fucking movie.

Not saying Skyrim or RDR are bad, I love em, I'm saying he's gonna attempt to copy the mastery of R*/Bethesda and fail, giving us... Mafia 2 with a bad story.
Not saying I like SR3 either, but I do love the games that give me crazy fun which is what SR3 stands for.

#6 Posted by MildMolasses (3190 posts) -

There ain't nothing wrong with the old Crash Bandicoot games. The recent shovel ware, yes, but not the originals

#7 Posted by Napalm (9230 posts) -

I really hope we're all just misinterpreting his comment, because right now, it sounds like he's just saying he wants Saints Row: The Third to be a super serious, mature game. That's not where I want the Saints Row IP to go at all.

#8 Posted by Phoenix778m (301 posts) -

Were the other saints row games that different in morality? Would you want your wife catching you playing GTA? I just don't see his comparisons. Saints Row is to Skyrim as apples are to oranges.

#9 Posted by Hadoken101 (1104 posts) -

Saints Row was my favourite game of last year and I'll be really disappointed if they try and make it more serious. If that's the case, then what will make it any different than any other shitty GTA clone?

#10 Posted by TheBlackPigeon (335 posts) -

Jason Rubin can have my giant purple dildo when he prys it from my cold, dead hands.

#11 Posted by mpgeist (655 posts) -

Why does everything have to be art? Fuck you Rubin!

#12 Edited by Cloneslayer (1749 posts) -

watching some of the GB crew react to this on Twitter, they are PISSED!

#13 Posted by smcn (949 posts) -

This is what new Managers/CEO's do. Trash everything the previous guy did to push their own projects.

#14 Posted by joku2002 (54 posts) -

Why is this guy sounding like Jack Thompson? SR3 was the greatest SR game ever. Man this is look really bad. No one with this man's mentality should be running a modern game company.

#15 Posted by Papercuts (7 posts) -

"Darksiders 2 is very interesting," he said, "but I think I can get that team to make other very interesting games."

I also don't like this comment whatsoever. Ugh.

#16 Posted by Hailinel (25787 posts) -

Well, there goes any amount of respect I might have had for Rubin as a professional in the industry.

#17 Posted by Dallas_Raines (2269 posts) -

@Cloneslayer:

Yeah, Ryan and Whitta are on goddamn fire right now.

#18 Posted by addictedtopinescent (3634 posts) -

That's odd man, dude basically shitting all over his company's best selling game.. Anyway this is frustrating, dude doesn't seem to realize that there's a reason SR3 sold a bunch and was critically acclaimed, it stands as one of the only games that's proud to be stupid and over the top in a market of games striving for movie-like depth and tone. IMO that's why the game was so well received.

I do agree that at some points I did kinda wish It was less random stupidity and more SR2's parody, but I'd rather they up the stupidity even more than go all GTA4 with the franchise, that would be a terrible move with GTA5 and Watch Dogs around the corner.

Rubin, you fucking change it, and you'll see the sales drop so much, it'll be worth it just to see the look on your face...ya fuckin' idiot.

#21 Posted by ThePickle (4267 posts) -

I was pretty embarrassed just playing it in spots.

#22 Posted by mpgeist (655 posts) -

I love how angry Ryan is getting. Awesome.

#23 Posted by joshthebear (2704 posts) -

Hell no. I'm all for serious games, but if he tries to change Saints Row I'll be pissed. If there isn't giant purple dildo bats, auto-tuned pimps, naked Russian dudes, and more then I'll not be happy.

#24 Posted by TheBlackPigeon (335 posts) -

@Napalm: Does that mean we have to mail him boxes of thongs and dildos?

#27 Posted by Hailinel (25787 posts) -

At the risk of invoking a joke that's played out, I propose a Kickstarter to rescue Volition from the clutches of THQ's incompetence.

#28 Posted by jkz (4079 posts) -

You dun fucked up, Rubin, you dun fucked up...

#29 Posted by Barrock (3763 posts) -

Everybody tweet Rubin and let him know of your love of Saints Row.

#30 Posted by Phatmac (5919 posts) -

I don't love SR3, but it was good for it was. For a new guy to the company you have to defend your team. Doing this isn't going to help your stance at THQ or with Volition. Volition is one of the biggest reasons that THQ is even alive at this point. It baffles me that Rubin said any of this stuff. It makes me worried for the new Saints Row game. Just let Volition do what they have to.

That's what I took him to mean, with him saying he was "embarrassed" and then bringing up those other games. I totally don't understand that - we've played those other games already, Saint's Row is its own unique, crazy thing. Why would you go to the creative, hard-working Volition team who made a highly praised, successful, and fun game and say "nope! do it different now!" Makes no sense to go and shit on one of the most dependable groups of developers that THQ has.
#32 Edited by HatKing (6448 posts) -

Yep, you guys are all clearly right and THQ shouldn't change a thing! Just look at how well this shits been working for them.

*drops mic*

EDIT: This isn't a comment directed at Saints Row specifically, more just that we should be willing to see change within the studio.

#33 Posted by Lagaroth (172 posts) -

He better not change my Darksiders and Metro.

#34 Posted by triviaman09 (816 posts) -

@HatKing: uDraw and other stuff is why THQ is tanking, not SR. If all of their IP sold half as well as SR, they'd be on top of the damn world.

The interviewer in the article needs to be getting more of this. How's this for a loaded non question in a supposed "professional" interview:

"I haven't played the game, I confess to Rubin, because I wouldn't want to be caught playing it by my wife or my son. It would be embarrassing."

Rubin responded terribly, of course, but what the fuck?

Don't be changing my Saints Row the Third the Second Part 1: The Prequel into no straight up gta knock off, motherfucker. Keep that shit crazy.

SR3 shipped like 4 million copies.... >.>

And THQ took a BATH on uDraw.

But it's their most successful game. Why would you change that?

That's not worth a mic drop. Saints Row: The Third is one of THQ's most successful titles. Their troubles are because of a tablet peripheral, not Saints Row.

You do realize that SR3 sold over 4 million copies right? The reason they're failing is because of uDRAW. SR3 was their most profitable game in a long while.

#41 Edited by HatKing (6448 posts) -

@triviaman09: It's more so a comment on this group's inability to accept change. I personally think Saints Row should be done. The joke only works once. I'd love to see the studio try their hand at something new other than being that 'Saints Row studio'. Red Faction Guerrilla was incredible, and it did so without being childish/offensive to half the population. Being crazy and fun doesn't have to come with the crutch of dick jokes, misogyny and childishness.

I had just as much unadulterated fun knocking down giant martian smokestacks with construction robots in Guerrilla as I did at any point in Saints Row, and I didn't have to feel guilty about it at the same time.

#42 Posted by Soffish (142 posts) -

Wait, didn't he give a whole speech criticizing publishers for not treating their developers with respect? Yet, now he seems to be throwing the most talented people at THQ under the bus. Huh.

#43 Posted by Ghost_of_Perdition (751 posts) -

He's doing a real good job of showing support for his teams as the new president. Fuck that guy.

"Darksiders 2 is very interesting," he said, "but I think I can get that team to make other very interesting games."

I really don't like that where that's going. Seriously. Fuck that guy.

Especially compared to 2.

If this change means making it more like 2 but WAY more polished. More power to Rubin. (He also made Crash Bandicoot so he gets a pass from me)

How about you see how Saints Row 4 turns out before making such bold proclamations?

#49 Posted by Quarters (2105 posts) -

Dude...this is not cool. STTT was great. Throwing them under the bus like that is a horrid first strike as a leader, and just totally paints this wrong. If he ruins SR...GAH.

#50 Edited by Liminality (450 posts) -

I liked the humor in Saints Row 3, but as a game it was boring, all the game needs is better gameplay, and it doesn't sound like he wants to do that. What really bothers me is the Darksiders quote, not only it sounds like he wants to end the story before we can play as the other horsemen, it also seems like he completely diminishes the ideas of the developers.

I feel like we need to let him know what we think about his comments, in one way or another, before he destroys the great games that THQ has been creating lately.
