Overview
Sankokushi (also known as Sankokushi: Shikou Puzzle Game) is a mahjong solitaire eroge developed and released by Mitchell for arcades in Japan on August 1996.
As the title is a wordplay on "Sangokushi" (a historical book known as Records of the Three Kingdoms), Sankokushi is stylized after the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China. It includes two difficulty modes: a three-level Easy mode (where the backgrounds are classical art of military commanders) and an eight-level Normal mode (where the backgrounds are anime-style female representations of military commanders in different states of undress).
Unlike traditional mahjong solitaire games, Sankokushi has players removing mahjong melds of three tiles (either matching or sequential, with sequential tiles only matchable if it's "123", "456", or "789"), rather than two-tile pairs. In addition, tiles are only exposed if two-or-more of its sides (rather than one of its longer side) are unobstructed. Players have a limited amount of time to clear four specific melds (representing part of a mahjong hand) from the table, with other melds as bonus points. Players have three different types of limited-use aids (HELP, BACK, and ALL BACK) and can spend their score between-rounds for bonus power-ups (including a faster cursor, slower timer, and tiles that are marked when they can be used).
Mitchell later returned to a Three Kingdoms-style mahjong solitaire eroge with the 2001 game Janpai Puzzle Choukou.
