Very fun. The beat by beat format is the right way to go on this. I'll definitely continue with this series.
I was worried it could have taken a direction like Panning the Stream, which is half nothing to do with the subject matter and then a general discussion of whatever was watched.
@dizzyhippos:I am also watching it in Japanese but I have to say, I briefly switched it to English to see how it is and I thought it was hilarious. The English accents are so over the top (Speedwagon is especially great) and the way they occasionally add stereotypical British words and phrases is just fantastic (like using me instead of my). Its funny to see how off script it goes compared to the subtitles that I am guessing match the Japanese voiceover. I am actually not sure if I should go for authenticity vs ridiculousness...
Thanks for the podcast. I use to like posting about cartoons and anime in the main forum thread but not so much anymore. What I love about the big exposition of shounen manga is how operatic it feels. Characters reciting, almost singing their feelings and actions back and forth. It's even more apt when it becomes anime because then you have an actual musical score and voice acting to go along with it. I'd almost recommend people stick with the anime exclusively. I love the comic and I love his art but Araki's earlier art in particular can feel rough and abstract to the point that it can be hard to tell what exactly is happening in fights, and that becomes a problem when the fights are one of the main draws. Now some thoughts of the story within these episodes:
Something I like about about this opening arc are the interpersonal conflicts of the primary characters. It is a true battle of gentlemen and who can maintain that poise over the other without sullying their reputation. The great thing about Dio here is how his main conflict isn't necessarily against the Joestars at first but instead trying to defeat/denounce what he views as his own dirty bloodline and make a name for himself.
In a way Dio truly loses the moment he puts on that mask and throws away his humanity. It is him admitting that he can't win with his own power and that he is every bit the scumbag as his dad who would commit any evil deed to survive. Thus going forward the conflict is not really JoJo fighting against Dio Brando but rather it's him fighting against the legacy of the stone mask, which just so happened to fall into the hands of the worst possible person to hold a grudge against him.
Ok because of you I just started a trial on Crunchyroll, but I’m in Germany and it’s IN GERMAN now, that’s absolutely insane. I’ll get through it somehow but maaan. :(
Loving this. I hope Tamoor or Eyepatch Wolf bring up the name changes that happen in the translation ince characters start being more specifically named after songs and artists, trying to piece together the A to B thought process for some of the less obvious changes can be fun. Also sometimes the band reference in the Japanese audio just completely goes over my head despite being audibly spoken, and I'm curious if some of them would slip by Jeff and Lucy too if one of the other hosts don't bring them up.
This is my favourite piece of media ever, and so needless to say, in thrilled. The only thing I would be is to John: I think you should do your best to to refrain from the "just wait for the _____" as much as possible. I say this as someone who would find that to be a very difficult thing to do, but I think the twists and turns of Jojo's would land better.
That being said, I love the extra context that John is giving to some of the things that come up. I think adding bits of trivia is a really fun way to talk about Araki's wonderful peculiararities. Fantastic episode, u can't wait for more!
Had no idea who that Super Eyepatch Wolf guy was, or so I thought! Been listening to the Let's Fight a Boss, so I actually did know who it was, but not in context.
Also, JoJo is one of the few animes I've seen, so this is fun just as a reminder of things forgotten along the way
Very excited for this! I just finished Stone Ocean recently, been sitting through my own thoughts about the entire series, can’t wait to hear what these guys think as well. Have fun!
I'm watching along for the first time, and after those first three episodes I am ALL IN. I wasn't really familiar with the series beyond the Roundabout memes and that "vree" clip that popped up in a bunch of stickman Flash animations in the mid-2000s, so had no idea what to expect.
But holy shit, what a gloriously weird show this is. Can't wait to see where it goes!
SOOoOOoOOoOooO many people have told me to watch JoJo's that it just bounced off of me as one of those "It'll never live up to the hype now" shows that I'm just not going to watch.
I didn't even make it to the end of their coverage of ep1 before I stopped what I was doing and started watching like WTF even is this, are they serious right now?
Whelp, they were. Damn. I'm 3 episodes in, finished this episode of the pod, gawt damn I'm hooked, what a wild ride.
Personally, I still hate the art its just not what I look for in anime but I can't get over how just unapologetically weird it is.
I know its a bit of a bummer to hear pretty leading spoilers like "Nazis" but as someone who has never ever seen any of the show prior to this, even I knew there was timeline stuff in the show from all the memes and prodding of friends to watch it. I don't know the context or anything else around it, and while sure that's a spoiler technically; it didn't really bother me at all. I see a lot of the anti-spoiler comments coming from people who HAVE already watched the show, worried its going to ruin it for those of us that haven't. As someone in the camp that hasn't seen it - we fine ya'll
@dya: I'm watching it in English too because I'm usually multitasking and can't always keep my eyes on screen.
It's super corny and probably lacks the charm/talent of the Japanese cast given how excited Tam was discussing Dio's dialogue but it wasn't "bad". They're laying on the soap opera styling pretty thick which fits the show's theme perfectly. That said, I didn't come away from the English VO for "Useless, Useless, Useless" like OMG what a line!
Excited for this! I loved how lengthy this was, in contrast to the other person I saw jokingly lamenting about the duration.
I will say though that despite the length, I felt like there could have been much more time spent getting opinions from Jeff and Lucy about what went on in each scene, on each character, etc. Not that they didn't have a chance to, but when they did it seemed like they usually only had a line or two to say. It felt like there was almost as much time recapping the show's events by Tamoor as hearing those fresh perspectives
So while I definetely don't want the episodes to be shorter, or for I'd maybe like Tamoor and Supereyepatchwolf to try to coax more opinions and predictions and analysis out of Jeff and Lucy (and/or for Tamoor and eyepatchwolf to do that more themselves, though I think as is they were doing it a good amount)
Also, I only just realized this will be every other week and not weekly, which is a shame!
If you guys do Part 3/Stardust Crusaders and onwards (and I hope you all do!) then I def think it'll need to be weekly then, especially for SC.
Didn't realize y'all were doing a Jojo podcast. A quick note to fill in some blanks that might not have come through in translation:
- Jojo's dad was portrayed as unhelpful, but it's a pretty typical "protector being temporarily corrupted" sort of trope. That being said, he definitely wasn't just immediately giving up on Jojo and treating Dio as his "favorite". It really was that he felt responsible for spoiling Jojo, after realizing a kid the same age as him can act so much more refined (you know, Dio's "charisma"). In the end, George was just a super loving, if not naïve, father that believed his son can become a "true gentleman", and that he can give that same amount of love to his adopted son as well.
@8bitavenger: @jbick89: agreed! I felt like Tam did this before I’d really gotten into Elden Ring too! Like WHOA WHOA! I don’t want to know all of this! Let people experience things organically and react to them not set people up.
