I'm coming in fresh. I couldn't quite tell if it's meant to be a comedy or not from the first 3 episodes. It's seems sort of a serious "fight of the week" anime, but also things like Robert EO Speedwagon just seems way too funny to take seriously.
It reminded me in a odd way of Cromartie High School.

It's not a comedy, it's a serious series with some comedy in it. It just also has some real goofy moments. It playing them straight is what's great and fun about it though. The first 3 episodes are just the very tip of the iceberg. It's similar to Metal Gear being an overall serious story but then on the side you have real weird stuff going on like the locker masturbation easter eggs in 2, the Raiden face mask in 3, etc...Makes it unique with a weird (but good) blend of tone.
edit: Lucy sums it up early in the podcast, earnest but silly ala Yakuza side stuff.
Was trying to figure out why I recognized the fourth cast members voice. I've watched a bunch of his video essay things on youtube, but I never paid attention to what their channels name was. Super Eyepatch Wolf has some really good videos out on their channel.
I've had JoJo in my Netflix queue for ever. Maybe I'll have to give this a shot. Just watched Cowboy Bebop and really didn't fuck with it, but maybe the talk-along of this will help keep me interested.
Great first episode! I'm excited for it to continue. I'd love it to go on further than the promised first season. Hearing about the reactions and predictions of the new viewers is the best part about these kinds of podcasts. My only kind of critical opinion or criticism (Which is pretty related) is that I hope Super Eyepatch Wolf can keep spoilers in better. Him saying the part about Nazis is all ready too much for me because I don't want the other hosts getting spoiled. Especially Jeff who seems to be the freshest on it.
Great dynamic so far, with John bring a measured expertise that cuts in when needed but otherwise doesn't feel the need to drive everything, Tamoor as a fantastic host who is partly guide and partly share in the enthusiasm, and Lucy and Jeff who are the perfect newbies to engage in the repertoire. Even a 5 star runtime, though obviously I expect that will dial down with less of a need for the introduction. All in all, very excited to see how y'all get on.
The idea of something called "Baka-senpai" has been floating around in my head for so long. Finally dunking Bakalar in some anime (or the Yakuza series, alternatively) is a great idea.
Could you all put the episode #s that are discussed somewhere in the description of the podcast? I know this one is the first 3 episodes, but as the series goes on it's just nice to see it in writing to make sure I'm caught up/listening to the correct podcast episode, etc. cheers
I greatly enjoyed this. Phantom Blood is my least favored part in comparison to the rest. I still like it, but it's naturally the most simple and straightforward story in the series. But going back to the beginning and taken in isolation, buckwild stuff really starts popping off from the juimp. Hearing perspectives from the uninitiated really makes me appreciate it more. Can't wait to see how they feel as everything continues to escalate in beautifully strange and intricate directions.
I love that Lucy mentioned the rendering error on Lost's opening titles, I've always noticed it too! And if I remember correctly JJ Abrams made them as a temporary placeholder titles, expecting them to get replaced later on.
@tartyron: I will disagree with one commenter above. It's a comedy. And despite how it's presented, it's very dry.
It's one of those things where you're not sure if the author meant something to be funny, but as you become more familiar with their work, it's clear that he did. It's just not very gag-based and doesn't spend time on actual "jokes", more just weird dialogue and situations that make you say "What just happened?". I would compare it to Metal Gear humor in that regard.
Only a few jokes are immediately obvious, and they're usually the weakest part of the humor in JoJo.
It's one of the best comedy anime there is because of that. Usually, with adaptations from manga, you get overly shouty and clear punchlines. Characters going "WHAAAAT" and making silly faces akin to a sitcom laugh track. There's none of that in JoJo.
It's a dumb totally self-aware romp that takes masculine heterosexual shows and dips them into a weird queer atmosphere (I would assume accidentally at first, just because the author is obsessed with fashion).
After watching the 00 explanation episode, I was immediately all-in and watched the first 3 episodes of JoJo for the first time.
Though most of this is great, and hearing you all talk about the absurdity of the show is fantastic, I can't help but be incredibly disappointed about all of the spoiler talk: "This isn't the last you'll be seeing..", "Oh there will be more on that later..", etc.
I'm about 3/4 through and I would guess that I've heard about 7 different phrases like this, plus a few much more direct, straight up spoilers. I went from extremely excited to seriously disappointed through the first hour twenty of listening.
I want to watch JoJo without any surprises being ruined and listen to the next episode of the pod to hear how Jeff & Lucy react + some interesting tidbits from the anime experts as they come up.
You guys have mentioned at least a couple times how All Systems Goku was your inspiration for starting this pod up. The that show was great, to me, was that Jeff & Dan had very little idea WTF was going on and what was coming next. Their genuine surprise and excitement to get on microphone and express the wild stuff they just saw and what they think might happen next was absolutely thrilling. It helps that they're funny, charismatic dudes that have super positive reactions to watching characters do wild stuff of course, but yeah.
I hate to say it because I think everyone on the show gels really well (and I always love seeing/hearing Tam in everything), but maybe the show would be better without Tam & SuperEyepatchWolf if they can't keep the spoilers in.
Thanks for trying the show out, I really appreciate all the work you guys do, and I hope you all can make this change because I really do want to continue listening.

Couldn't agree more. I was super bummed both personally and on behalf of Lucy & Jeff with all the spoiler talk. It's making this show and likely will make future episodes of JoJo worse for me, as whenever I see Nazis show up I'll probably think of this disappointing moment rather than my natural response which would likely be a very positive "WTF IS GOING ON?".
Great first outing and thanks for giving me an excuse to re-watch Jojo's in Japanese this time since I made the mistake of watching it in English the first time round.
Love the format so far, maybe less stuff like "oh you'll see more of this / wait till you see this" i never watched the show and i'm coming in fresh and i prefer to stay unaware of what's to come. Thanks !
I hope this lasts. I don't personally find the first season to be especially good, and it would be a shame if they fell off before even getting to stands.
As much as they kept comparing JoJo’s to a soap opera, let’s be real: this level of dumb, macho feuding between musclebound men seems like it owes itself much more to the soap opera for boys: professional wrestling.
Admittedly there is a lot more dramatic crying in just these first 3 episodes of JoJo’s than there is in wrestling.
Really enjoyed this first episode, I think the balance between the expertise that John and Tam bring to it and the newfound enthusiasm of Jeff and Lucy is pretty spot-on. As someone who has seen some JoJo but is far from caught up, I didn’t mind the hints at what was to come but the more direct spoilers did bum me out a little, since I remembered how fun it was hitting the point in the series where the wilder elements cropped up, and how knowing about it in advance (even if they were out of context) would have diminished the surprise.
Since four episodes have already been recorded it can’t be helped if there are more of those moments, but I do hope that the spoilers get reined in going forward for the newbies both on the show and listening to it.
This is the fourth Jojo podcast I've listened to, but I still absolutely loved the first episode. I hope they keep going after Battle Tendency, parts 3 & 4 especially feel like they influenced a ton of stuff in video games.
@angrywookie29: Sounded like they're watching Subbed. One of the VAs gets brought up along w/ their other roles. They also poke some fun at the English used towards the end of episode 3.
Excited for this! I loved how lengthy this was, in contrast to the other person I saw jokingly lamenting about the duration.
I will say though that despite the length, I felt like there could have been much more time spent getting opinions from Jeff and Lucy about what went on in each scene, on each character, etc. Not that they didn't have a chance to, but when they did it seemed like they usually only had a line or two to say. It felt like there was almost as much time recapping the show's events by Tamoor as hearing those fresh perspectives
So while I definetely don't want the episodes to be shorter, or for I'd maybe like Tamoor and Supereyepatchwolf to try to coax more opinions and predictions and analysis out of Jeff and Lucy (and/or for Tamoor and eyepatchwolf to do that more themselves, though I think as is they were doing it a good amount)
This was fun to listen to even though you missed some really important points.
Jojo's started right as Fist of the North Star was nearing the end of its run. This series at its start was definitely a Fist of the North Star ripoff, especially apparent if you were to see what Araki drew before Jojo's. Suddenly he's drawing these incredibly buff tiny headed men out of nowhere who know martial arts. Hell. Speedwagon is basically just Rei from Fist of the North Star as well.
The intense emotional back and forths were from Araki's love of contemporary "girl's' manga. I say girls in quotes because any true connoisseur of the medium would understand that 70's and 80's shoujo manga are in fact the manliest works of art ever bestowed on to humanity.
