Dang, for the first time ever, I'm giving GB podcast a miss, the quality is just subpar. Props in general for the GDC coverage, especially the awesome SWERY video, but this podcast was just too harsh for my ears :(

I've known about Patrick Klepeck for a while now, but he's actually a really good addition to the podcast - entertaining to listen to, but also pretty informational at time. Should appear on the Giant Dongcast more often!

I always get the sense that he is trying to hard. This podcast turned me a around a bit, but he has to go a bit farther with clear opinions to me. Seems like everything is a weird metaphor in the work of his I have seen.

Are you one of those people that can't like two things at once? Like if Giantbomb is this great (which is it) then nothing else competing can be worth your time? I'm not saying I like G4, I really don't, and I think it's a missed chance as a real channel for gamers but I don't mind X-Play at all and especially Adam whom I think always has a pretty smart opinion about the industry and presents it in a pretty good way. Regardless of how I feel about G4 as a channel him and Morgan are pretty great in my book. Then again just because Giantbomb "does everything they do better" doesn't mean they arent any good at all.   "
Agreed.  Of course Giant Bomb is the best damn video game-related review site around, but that doesn't mean that everything else is terrible.  I trust Sessler and X-Play far more than I trust Gamespot or IGN.  At least they don't get paid off for their reviews.  Back when I actually watched Extended Play, there was rarely a review I didn't agree with.   As populist as everything about the G4 Network is, they aren't afraid to go against the tide and make controversial statements.  
 
Oh, and until Giantbomb starts airing 7 hour long marathons of Cops and Tosh.0 knock-offs, then Giantbomb can't even compete with G4.  :p

Yeah, remember that one time when Adam reviewed Crisis Core, gave it a negative review and got bombarded by angry fanboys, then responded by saying he can say whatever the hell he wants because it's his opinion? That's what got me into his Soapbox show in the first place, at least before it got fused with the rest of x-play.

@Slaker117:  We don't actively think about a lot of things, that doesn't mean they aren't an integral part of our lives.  I went on this hiking trip last fall.  The trail climbed along this mountain ridge.  From there I could see off over the horizon, trees and distant clouds.  A part of that experience was depth perception.  It granted a sense of scale.  Yeah, I'm sure if I was a cyclops I could have 'figured out' the distance using perspective...but that's not really the same.  
 
There's an emotional gut feeling that comes from depth perception.  Was I thinking about this?  No.  But I wasn't thinking about colors or textures or sounds either.  You'd hardly argue those things shouldn't be in games...
 
I think you're right that people dismiss depth because they don't think about it, but I think this dismissal is short sighted (sorry, bad pun).  Depth perception can be tied to emotions.  When you're trapped in a tight space a part of that feeling of 'the walls closing in' comes from that sense of how close the wall is.  Wide vistas like I described above aren't the same without depth.  Nor are heights.  Staring into a forest is pretty different too.  In a game all the trees bunch up together.  In real life though there's a real sense of space between the tree trunks, especially in an old forest with tall trees and little undergrowth.
 
Over and over and over again in nature predators have evolved to have binocular vision.  Clearly there's something to it.  Depth is information and information is power.   If we don't have to guess distances in games using tricks of perspective and blurred backgrounds we shouldn't have to.  It's silly.  Why do something in a less efficient way?  Depth allows people, as you correctly point out, to better navigate the world.  We use it constantly, thinking or not, to drive cars, shoot guns, walk down a crowded street, sit on a chair, etc.  It is useful.
 
Game designers don't need to make special games to take advantage of this.  Any game that takes place in a 3D space should take advantage of it by simply having accurate stereoscopic depth.   As for 'paying extra' for it in the 3DS.  Whatever.  You pay extra for new technology every time you buy a new system.  That's kind of how it works.  Did we really 'need' HD?  No, not really.  But we all paid extra for it all the same.  Was HD really any more important than 3D?  I personally don't think so.
