Yeah much as i want them to see Super i think finally having context on a lot of the stuff they didn't understand in Z by watching original Dragonball would make Super all the better. Also original Dragonball is just full of goofs and is endlessly creative. Which while i may enjoy Z it kinda just does the same thing 4 times over 4 sagas. original DB is more of an adventure , which makes it more interesting to me personally.

Wait, did they cut the husband swapping line and how Yamcha is a downgrade?

Jeff might like Yu Yu Hakusho. Similar time period/animation style and it was something of a landmark series for fight scenes. Dan is in for some serious shit.

As for what they should podcast next, they should probably do OG Dragon Ball first, as long as Super hasn't completed the English dub. If they pause the podcast long enough for the dub to finish (which I'm guessing is going to be six to nine months), then they can continue on to Super as the next phase.

I haven't gotten to the end of the podcast yet, but I wanted to say, before I do:

This was my first time watching the Buu saga (I fell off after the Cell Saga as a teen), and the ending to DBZ is so freaking weird. I mean, Goku is legitimately acting like he has an addiction to fighting. He's creating new opponents just to get the a fresh 'high'. He's ignoring his friends and family. He's showing up at social events just fucking filthy, not taking care of himself.

You have a problem, Goku. This is an intervention.

If they do move on to more Dragon Ball I would hope that they end up doing Super next.

Jeff's small tease of Initial D, was amazing though. I very much would love to one day get to listen to these two discus the intricacies of tofu delivery.

But the one thing that I really wish this show would turn into above all else is just covering a bunch of short single season animes. There are a ton of great shows out there that are short and they could cover them in like 3 to 5 podcasts. Just off the top of my head... Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, FLCL, Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, Paranoia Agent, Mushishi, Boogiepop Phantom, Air Gear, or Black Heaven. Getting Jeff and Dan's take on any of these would be amazing and they would be a quick turnaround only taking about a month to finish. Moving around a wide range of short anime might also be less tiring for them then trying to tackle another 100+ episode behemoth.

I also want them to continue with the show some day, but either way this has been a beautiful time with many great moments, even with all the obtuse wrestling tangents.

I think Jeff especially will be into the *look* of Evangelion, but idk if either of them would necessarily take to it as a show; it's a very strange, introspective, and at times harrowing thing above the goofy character dynamics of DB.

Either way they want to go I will follow them into the anime rabbit hole!

Ah evangellion. The story of an anime creator using his personal experience with severe depression as the basis of a giant robot deconstruction show. Like it or hate it, you'll definitely learn why everyone's still arguing about it.

I would totally rewatch GT and listen to Jeff and Dan talk about it, but I'm hoping they are gonna watch the original DB before that. It's just too good.

Anyway I had a great time with rewatching DBZ and listening to the podcast. Can't wait for more in a few months! Thanks guys!

I'm sure you've had this recommendation plenty of times, but if you do delve into Dragon Ball Super at some point, it'd probably be best to watch the movies Battle of the Gods and Resurrection 'F' then skip ahead to episode 28 of the show. The first 27 episodes are retellings of what happens in the movies, except full of needless filler and questionable animation.

Of course hearing your thoughts on Evangelion also sounds like it'd be interesting...

Now that I have listened to this religiously every monday, its time to relisten from time to time. The journey was awesome and witnessing how Jeff and Dan understand the appeal of anime throughout the series is fantastic. It reminds me of my early days when i started watching Urusei Yatsura and One Piece at 3 am (the time it aired on TV, Yup am) after watching cartoons my whole childhood and not noticing the difference between JPN & other animation.

PS: @jeff Initial D IS THE SHIT!!!! and there is a "KAI" version of it that pretty much cleans the show of non essential scenes.

If you guys want to watch super, you can speed into it by just watching the 2 movies "Battle of the gods" and "Resurrection F". Think it covers up to episode 27 of super? It has some minor differences but also less side plot stuff.

Shoutouts to Jeff making sure My Hero Academia come a huntin' for his head by the end of the podcast.

I think more people should recommend shows for them to watch or maybe 300 more "skip the start of super and just watch the first two movies! posts"... they're not reading/listening/wanting to hear any of your recommendations ffs.

man, it's so weird how he was never called Mr. Satan in the US until relatively recently. so many people in the US who grew up on DBZ totally never heard that, and even now it feels really fake.

but anyway great series guys. I hope you don't feel too annoyed or pressured to jump into anything arbitrarily or too quickly or ever again. experts can take their time.

Because I never see anyone bring it up, I think the fastest, most painless way to experence the original Dragon Ball story would be to read the first, I dunno, 13 or so volumes of the manga. You´ll get no VA or moving images but with there being no Kai equivalent of that part of the show it seems the best alternative to me. Having seen it would also contextualize the weird Pilaf Gang stuff in Super.

I hope Dan enjoys Hero Academia a lot if he watches it, cause I´m pretty sure I don´t want to hear his takes on Deku if he doesn´t. Just as someone who really adores that character.

A revelation 20 years in the making...

I just realized that Goku and his family are the only characters in this entire series that have a first and last name.

Also I just realized that "Pan" is a fantastic name because it's both a pun on a demon AND bread. Making it the perfect name for that character.

I'd rather they watched some shorter anime instead of jumping right back into another hundred plus episode show like Dragonball or Super. I'd rather they watched the Samurai Champloos and Black Lagoons of anime.

Do people expect them to be doing this podcast into their 60s? These guys are not full-time anime watchers. They got other stuff to do.

It's a shame that the JSAT Special never got a proper release, as it's the next best thing to watch if you want some Goku-and-Friends-hanging-out-super-casually action.

If they watch the movies, they should at least watch the first three or four episodes of the show first. Specially since episode 2 is the best episode in the whole Super run. Just look at this picture of Vegeta.

GT isn't better than Super, but Super isn't better than GT either. They're both really bad, but for different reasons. Also, Super doesn't really have that much of Buu and Satan. Super is pretty much a show just focused on Goku with Vegeta as a sidekick. Most characters who were developed over DB and DBZ end up being completely irrelevant and fade away from the story.

I doubt it will happen, but that would be my preferred way to go too.
Specially since GT and Super have a ton of references and even more returning characters from original Dragon Ball. Having that knowledge would make watching either Super or GT a better experience.

I thought Super was horrendous. I don't believe Jeff would sit through 54 straight episodes of insubstantial side characters fistbumping on a featureless asteroid, and to even get that far they'd have to find the consumption of food to be absolutely hysterical.

@johnymyko: Exactly. Skip the Super filler? That's crazy talk. That's going to be some of the favorite parts for Jeff and Dan. The Super movies are the wrong way to go for these two.

As for GT. I've never seen any of it and so I can't comment on how good it is, but I'd gladly watch along if the podcast goes down that direction.

Honestly I'd love for them to do original Dragon Ball. I don't think either of them could stomach GT or most of Super.

I won't say GT is a good show but I will defend Dan Dan as a great themesong to my dying day.

I do hope they get to Original Dragon Ball at some point.

This. Episode 2 of Super is the only time Dragon Ball has managed to make me laugh.

GT is a perfect cromulent show, to be honest. Everyone's old as fuuuuuuuck! That's great!

Please don't watch Super, it's the anime fans who are suggesting it. GT is very different but at least it does some interesting things and goes in wild directions instead of churning out a vanilla boring continuation to make money. Yes, it wasn't written by the original creator but they still had some really cool ideas that made more sense than Goku holding hands to become a super saiyan god (yes this is literally what happens) and a gold Frieza (awful reskin nonsense garbage). I think GT makes for a wildly more entertaining experience, good and bad, and in turn makes the podcast better than discussing a modern show like Super would.
