Episode Notes:

You'll occasionally hear some stupid electronic buzzing in this, but it's short and not terribly frequent. You can thank my dad for putting his phone next to my recorder as his stupid eBay selling alerts went off.

Going through a bad break up right now and struggling with some things. It's funny because I see some Paul inside of myself with relationships and a few other things and it's making me want to change that stuff even more haha.

@ezdude: PhD's can be obtained by most studies other then science. such as history, math, english ect. But I agree I dont understand why you would obtain a PhD then become a wrestler, that seems like a waste of time unless you did it to have like a fallback plan.

The Springsteen stuff is dicky because it feels like only a dick would reject someone's shallow interest rather than share their "real" love of a thing with someone. I befriended one of my best friends from high school by saying I like heavy metal after listening to Metallica's Death Magnetic, which in retrospect is pretty phony, but that got him to share his extensive music library of actually great metal music with me when he could have dismissed me as a stupid idiot that I was instead. Sharing is caring!

You misunderstand him. When you get a PhD you end up doing research and working in a program at a school and building on the work they've done over time. So you are contributing to that.

Beyond that though, I think the way people look at education as solely practical, like just for "hey I got a certificate that says I did this" purposes is kind of insane and says a lot about our education system frankly. He wants to learn and he has the money to pay to learn. I am also someone who likes to learn in itself.

There's a lot more to education. It's cool if that's how someone wants to look at it (clearly some do) but don't be so puzzled why someone else does things differently. They care about learning and more than just the end result.

@artisanbreads: Yea i suppose that makes more sense, It just seems odd to me that someone would work really hard to earn a doctorate degree and then not apply that knowledge to a profession or job. Dont get me wrong, i am all for learning a subject just for the sake of learning new things, just knowing through the same experiences my family went through to get their degree's and now the amount of classes and work i have to go through now to get my degree, there is no way i would want to get a job where my degree isn't used at all. However i suppose if he is happy doing what he is doing then that is all anyone could ask for, and who knows, maybe he is secretly doing research none of us know about.

On the education discussion, I'll just say there is value in the way that it teaches you how to think that can be applied broadly that can have an impact even on a career that you wouldn't think the specific education would be necessary, such as professional wrestling. I'm not saying a doctorate is the only way to get this, either, however, people never waste their education by going into a job with opportunities to be creative. Even without those opportunities, you never know what else they are doing in their life outside of work.

Dunno what was more painful, Paul defending his Springsteen decision or railing against wrestling without any good reason. Fun content but frustrating to see Dan try to have a legitimate discussion and get shut down. Also, makes me glad I don't record any of the conversations I have while drinking.

Most people agree with you man so I don't mean to be too harsh. I constantly hear people looking at education that way but as I laid out I think that's kind of a sad thing to say about our education system. I have a lot of issues with it personally. Dan's degree and school experience is actually a great example of the issues with the education system.

@hatking: I use Pocket Casts to listen to them. You can set up a custom feed in the app to pull all of the episodes off of the premium content RSS feed. It'll grab everything, because they don't have individual feeds for each premium show, but it works. Just delete the shows you're not interested in.

Also, definitely a dick move by Paul not taking Dan's mom to the Springsteen show.

I can agree with both of them on wrestling. I used to like it, but Paul's not wrong that it's dumb. It's really dumb. I can't stand watching wrestling anymore because of how stupid it is.

@hatking: I use Pocket Casts, costs a few bucks bet well worth it (there's also a 14 day trial). I used to have the same problem as you, listenining in the car and at my home pc. Only downside I've found is the fact that there is no Windows application only a web player.

Is Paul just Mr. Jefferson from Life is Strange? They both seem to really like that John Lennon line.

I wonder how he feels about dark rooms?

Man that was rough at times to listen to (the Springsteen, unable to take an interest in somethin)

Paul reminded me of an elitist where you are not "allowed" to like something unless you have a rich history of it. Everyone was a new fan at one point.

Regardless, I am jealous of Dan's relationship with his dad and how they can chat for hours on end and it's always enjoyable to listen to.

Because people have more than one passion in life? And wrestling is something that he would need to do when he is younger. Once he hangs up the wrestling boots he can use his PhD. He has already stated that he is very passionate about helping kids with autism and plans to do that once his wrestling career is over. Not having a plan B is why you see old farts like Ric Flair and Sting still appearing on TV because they have nothing else and know nothing else. Austin is a smart smart dude for having his life planned out while he still has time to prepare for the future.

@demoskinos: I guess you didnt read the part that said "...unless you did it to have a fallback plan". also, If i was in his shoes and felt so strongly about helping children, then I would do it immediately, even if wrestling was my passion because in my opinion child health research seems more important to me then wrestling, and actions speak louder then words. I do not know enough about wrestling or the individuals to fully understand them such as yourself. What i do know is when i get my Doctorate in Biology, which is a dam long road, I am not going to spend time playing video games just because its my passion. I do agree with you though it is nice to see his life planned out, not a lot of people have the opportunity as he did to obtain a PhD and do what he loves, I just feel differently about how he goes about it is all.

"Did you use the whole fist, doc?"

First, I will say you don't have to even say "prostate", if you just say "that scene from Fletch" I immediately think "Mooooooon River".

Now, also: Paul, yes, that is amazingly dickish. I can't imagine how anyone can't see how dickish it is.

Going without your wife because you don't think she's a true-enough fan is insane.

I can understand you don't like bandwagoning, but ultimately that isn't your problem either. As Dan says, just because a person is a bandwagon fan doesn't mean they aren't enjoying it. They aren't doing it just to annoy you, they actually do like the bandwagon. So you should probably learn to live with it.

I also find it amazing a guy who was a mailman and now does nothing at all can look down on others for not accomplishing enough.

I like Paul Ryckert, but Dan is right. Paul is overly judgemental and Dan is right to try to improve his own behavior on that front.

I know "Newdan" is kind of a funny joke and all, but I REALLY respect Dan for trying to understand that everyone likes different things (unlike a lot of people I know). Music, sports, food, games, movies etc.
I didn't think you could get anymore awesome, Dan. You be you.
