If I could time travel & tell 18 year old me in 2009 that my new favorite site Giantbomb would do a podcast about DBZ AND not only would I be way back into Dragonball but the podcast would be my favorite. I...probably would’ve believed every word TBH. I mean I have access to fucking time travel nothing would shock me, Trump, Dragonball Super, being happily married, The Las Vegas Knights all plausible in a word where Time Travel is a thing ??‍♀️

I have no delusions this won't be yelled at them by multiple people on twitter or jeff's tumblr but in case they happen to be reading this first: Ginyu is absolutely playable in FighterZ, and he calls in the other 4 members of the Ginyu Force as strikers. Body Change is his level 3 and leaves the other player with a gimped Captain Ginyu who can't call out the Ginyu Force.

Im watching this along with the Team Four Star abridged show in the bg on mute, it syncs up quite well with their descriptions

I'm amazed at the level of control here. Jeff and Dan both saw the next episode preview for episode 47 and decided not to just jump into it.

Vegeta's exasperated last words to Goku and naked dream Vegeta are definitely the best parts of this set of episodes, I like the full fight overall but like a lot of these kinds of fights they can kind of drag on with a lot of sweet effects, to not a lot of effect, at least in the beginning. I just want to say I like what comes next, lots of cool stuff ahead!

Why do I need this?

Can we as a people stop being the people that Jeff and Dan describe who are the worst in comments. Let's just enjoy the show and stop telling them how to watch the show.

I had ZERO recollection of the Bulma-Frog Ginyu swap scene and was genuinely surprised that took up as much screen time as it did for how non-essential it was.

Jeff getting bored with the Freeza vs Goku fight makes sense, because watching this again as an adult I was getting bored as well. Still though, great shit coming up. Next episode should be fun!

I think Goku turns Super Saiyan in like 40 more episodes in the original DBZ, so this is definitely the speedy version

Yeah, and while I don't want to be one of those guys, I can't believe anyone would still recommend the original DBZ over Kai. I mean, does anybody really want to see Goku stand there charging the Spirit Bomb for three entire episodes?

You know, people have written this phrase so often on this site (and this series in particular) that I can't tell if you're being ironic or genuine.

It's actually completely filler, never happened in the manga. One of the few things Kai kept and I can kinda understand their reasoning for doing it as it paces the scene better giving some space to the fight without showing them punching forever, but on the other hand you could easily edit it out if you didn't need to try to fit the 22 minute tv slot.

I'm not gonna pretend it's super exciting, and it was certainly a chore when episodes were daily and I was a kid. But part of me does like the extended Spirit Bomb charge on a binge watch because it gets across the sheer length and desperation of what Goku is trying.

It's kind of the same reason that, in theory, I like the Vegeta Saga filler, to make it feel like months actually did pass on Earth, rather than quickly jumping to "oh lol the saiyans will be here tomorrow".

Overall, DBZ has way too much filler. Kai, I think, suffers in turn from having to work with DBZ's footage rather than being an actual re-telling. There are weird truncations and left overs. There's a lot of okay Vegeta backstory and some King Kai stuff dropped but Bulma-Ginyu filler has to stay because that's so intertwined in these episodes. Stuff like that.

Bad anime fans continuing to be bad... why can’t they just let Dan and Jeff enjoy the show like they want?

@dethfish: Yeah, the original Frieza Saga carried on well into the hundreds. I distincly remember Toonami marathoning it on TV and the Goku vs Frieza fight taking no less than 6 hours to play out.

@redking56: Man, after seeing DBZ Kai it's really hard to go back to the original dub of Dragon Ball Z. People talk about how the main reason to watch Kai is because it cuts out a lot of filler, but IMO the biggest improvement is the voice acting.

It bums me out but doesn't surprise me to hear Jeff and Dan still get harassed on social media and in these comments from impatient or picky fans trying to tell them to change their format or how they enjoy the show.

Goku's first transformation into a Super Saiyan is one of the coolest moments in fiction. Frankly, I'm excited for Dan and Jeff and am happy to hear that they're still totally excited to see it for themselves.

On the down-side, the Kai version of the moment features a lot of the shitty redrawn scenes rather than the restored original scenes.

@miceman64: You say "for some reason" as if the reason was not that it's completely hilarious and well-worth including in the final cut. Kai cuts out bad and boring filler, there is plenty of non-fighting, non-integral stuff left over, and Ginyu-Bulma is definitely worth keeping even if it doesn't meaningfully impact the advancement of the plot.

ahhhh it's back. The way you guys separated the episodes is definitely working in your favor. I don't see the reason why someone would ask of you to see episode 47, this is a much better stopping point.

Man, some of those last questions posed in this episode have some real interesting answers.
