I hope there is an accompanying video thing where they race each other on the appropriate track for each week using various f1 games from history.

The best illustration of how insanely fast f1 cars actually are - the gt cars are super fast, make no mistake, but the f1 cars are just from another league.

Good Indicative video, (also agree about Williams livery)

Found these too, which compare the different cars/bikes directly, the first will get the new acquainted with the Melbourne track...

F1 podcast!? AWESOME!

I still play Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 3 today lol

Must confess many mistakes in this podcast not that it's fair to judge but they convey the basics but lots of little errors about rules, tracks and drivers etc

Nope.

Mercedes. Sauber was Petronas, now... um... i confuse myself, i will always stick to Mercedes as long as the car is silver.

F1 is so big here in Europe, I'm surprised they don't like it more in America. Its competitive engineering with the fastest cars in the world in exotic locations around the world, what's not to like?

F1 cars are amazing, they zoom in on the AMG and V8 car but all you can hear is the F1 revving like hell 1mile away in the background and you know whats comming next. Americans dont know what they are missing.

Can anyone back up Danny on calling the Mercedes team Petronas? Because I've never heard anyone call them that.

Yea I'm not sure why I said that really. I blame the fact that we recorded at 8:30am on a Monday after a rather heavy weekend.

Actually, the problem is that it's impossible to watch here in the US. No major networks carry it so you have to have some absurdly expensive cable package just to get the one channel that might have the rights that year. They should really stream it online, fuckin bernie.

So the first F1 race is starts on Saturday night/Sunday morning at 2:00 A.M. What the hell? Guess I will have to record it. Do other races come on at the same time or is it just because this one is in Australia? Also, I am thinking about going to a local IndyCar race. Are those any good?

Yes they are run at local times ofc ;)

The Canadian, USAian and Brazilian GPs will suit your timeframe better i think :)

That's pretty much the first thing you notice at an F1 event if you've never been before; F1 cars are absurdly loud. Maybe slightly less so this year with the turbochargers?

Some guy from Marussia claimed the old cars blasted around 140dB in the pits, whereas the new ones squeak a mere 135. Still enough to make your ears bleed. For comparison, nascar pits never exceed 110dB, and a Lamborghini Gallardo farts a mere 89dB at full throttle...

I use downcast on my 5S and I can't figure out a way to put this podcast into it. I get the subscriber feed in iTunes, but it only shows the Bombcast and not this. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get this podcast into Downcast and have it work like any other podcast would?

Edit: Nevermind, I got it working. I'm kind of bummed that it's wrapped up all in one feed. I don't really want to have all the podcasts in one feed because it's kind of unnecessary. The Bombcast isn't really a premium podcast I thought and it doesn't need to be there in my opinion. I know it's probably a lot of work on the back end, but it would be nice to have the Bombcast, the Powerbombcast and this one segregated. I have no interest in listen to anyone talk about the greased up soap opera bullshit that is the WWE. I'd like to have that app download the feeds I want and not download the stuff I don't.

NASCAR exceeds 140db. It's close to 100 in the stands. Those cars are incredibly loud alone. The permissible exposure time without protection on pit road at a NASCAR race is about 30 seconds. There's no racecar on earth without mufflers that isn't well over 100db.

Somehow, Youtube lead me to this video highlighting a lot of the technical changes implemented this season in a pretty cool way. Red Bull has too much money. Also, no wonder their cars are having problems when they have to assemble all the pieces on the track.

Btw, as a Swiss, while I agree that Sauber probably isn't relevant (and was close to bankruptcy last year), they were for a long time, the team behind the "top teams" and for one season were considered the 3rd best team. That said, when they let Kamui Kobayashi go, they really fucked up. He was such an entertaining driver.

@masterrain: Yeah it's a shame. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that motor sports in general just aren't very publicized. The only part of the country that cares for motor sports is the south, since they have so much room to actually engage in motors ports themselves. And then when it comes to professionals, they have NASCAR and don't want to switch. I think F1 is getting more popular? I know several cities have meetups at bars on race weekends, as long as the bar agrees to put the race on, and some of them draw some decent crowds.

I agree, while Sauber is neither a current nor historic "top team" they were good enough awhile back for me to hold them in some esteem and hope they can make a comeback someday.

For those still looking, here's a lovely little pre-season primer that sums up the situations each of the teams currently find themselves in. Here's an excerpt:

MERCEDES

Full name: Mercedes AMG Petronas AMG F1 Petronas Racing AMG Team

Car: W05 Sod Off Ross

Engine: Mercedes

Drivers: Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg

Energised by the thrill of sacking Ross Brawn, Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda seem to have got the team in good shape for the start of the season. The car is one of the few without a sex aid on the front and instead uses a nose design known as ‘the smashed aardvark’. It was conspicuously quick in testing and proved so reliable that after the second day in Spain Nico Rosberg actually used it to drive back to Monaco for the evening. Lewis Hamilton should also be in good shape for 2014, especially at tracks that demand a lot of Twittering and trying out different hairstyles.

Have you considered giving this, the Powerbombcast and Box Office Bomb their own tab in the podcasts drop down menu? It would improve visibility by quite a lot. Especially considering that this will have a lot of episodes if all goes according to plan.

I always remember this one as one of the coolest maneuvers in F1. (Schumacher vs Hakkinen in Spa 2000.)

Also, the F1 2013 game is free this weekend on Steam. I'm having a lot of fun with it. I've been watching the practice while playing the game, getting hype for the race on Sunday.

This was pretty damn interesting. I have never watched motorsports (except for some Kenny Bräck races back in I don't know. But then someone got their legs clipped off in a crash and I went "eff this, I'm done")

But now I might have to watch some F1 this weekend... thanks... thanks for that.

This is, by far, my favorite overtake.

Mika Hakkinen on McLaren overtakes Michael Schumacher on Ferrari to take the lead of the 2000 Belgian GP while poor Ricardo Zonta (one lap behind) gets caught in the middle!
