Eh, that's more or less the exact way Jeff feels about all of us.

This is how everyone feels about all of their customers. The difference is most people aren't total dicks about it publicly. Privately feel, say and do what you want with regards to your customers. Publicly you have to play the part or people will label you the way they do TB.

@lackingsaint: Is that how it works in the real world? If you whine enough and make a big deal you'll get what you want?

Have you ever worked a retail job? I would argue it's worse in person. People show up restaurants and retail stores and act as though they are the most important customer to walk the face of the earth when they are buying some $10 meal/item.

Well the important thing is that you've found a way to feel superior to both

It works in the real world if you want it to. I'd personally rather live in a place where a person is treated like a person and not a notch on a subscriber count. But hey, fuck it, let's act like any suggestions or criticisms are "whining" and if you speak up about anything you deserve to be treated like a child. WHAT A UTOPIA IT COULD BE.

All this "viewer entitlement" bullocks just reminds me of the Mass Effect 3 ending, where journalists and fans started coming out and saying it was the player's fault that the original ending to the game was extremely disappointing.

@tastybacon_fred: It's not about being "superior" to anyone, that's the point. It's about not acting like a total jerk or not encouraging people being treated like shit. Content makers need to stop getting big heads and thinking they can piss on their audience all the time, and content watchers need to start thinking they deserve better treatment.

What I enjoyed about this was the outside perspective of the non-youtuber that is Alex & Patrick. TB was great and was enjoyable to hear him talk about this subject at the moment.

Would like to see him on again in the future but when it's relevant to the news which the whole youtube debacle was.

Do they deserve better treatment? They're watching videos for free. What else do they deserve? Should they be able to boss the person making the videos around and tell them what to do? That doesn't seem fair at all. For someone who preaches the gospel of love you sure had no problem saying you hated me for defending the guy not 20 minutes ago.

God, do you even realise how much you're twisting reality here? In NONE of the examples I have presented have the viewers even kind of reached the point of trying to "boss" TB around; the only moderately snarky comment towards him was disliked so much it was marked as spam, everything else was simple feedback and suggestion. I'm a content creator, and I will tell you that when people make suggestions and criticisms I take it on board and work with it to better my content and keep the people who are interested in what I do happy. And yes, Patrick would certainly appreciate the idea of not disregarding the feedback of your audience, considering he did a TEDX Talk about it.

@tastybacon_fred: I don't literally hate you, I just have a pretty big problem with commenters who say things like "Who are you? What do you deserve? You're just a scumbag and you deserve to be treated like one, don't you? Yeah, and you're going to like it."

Obviously the audience doesn't have to right to individually boss the content maker around, but the audience is the group that makes that person's success possible. They offer support and adoration when the content maker's life is rough, they are the ones that make the livelihood of that person a reality. In a head to head confrontation, the content maker should just take the high road and move on, instead of dressing the person down from a position of superiority in a rather long rant about how he doesn't care about any bit of his audience and only wants what can be quantified on a chart, graph, or bank account. It's a profoundly selfish way to view the world.

Guy has less class in dealing with inevitable masses of online detractors than any e-famous person I've ever encountered - he whines and bitches so much about it that you just end up hating him more than them. I find him irritating as hell personally and it's worrying how often he seems to be popping up in general games media recently.

Well I mean it's clear you don't follow him so whatever information you're basing all your assumptions on is pretty outdated. If all you're getting is the hate-reel then it's understandable you would act this way.

I doubt you're as big as content creator as he is and I doubt you get anywhere near as much feedback or vitriol so its really easy to say that you're a saint. His channel continues to grow, which it shouldn't be if he shitting on his audience all the time and doesn't listen to what they have to say like you claim. People would not watch his videos if he wasn't making what they wanted, which comes back around nicely to the point that he was making in that screenshot you posted, he makes content for the majority of his viewers, he doesn't take requests from individuals.

And I doubt he "literally hates" anyone either. Isn't it interesting how we can't actually judge people by what they say on the internet?

You're agreeing with his point. "The audience" is the group that makes that person successful. The audience is not 1 guy. 1 guy doesn't have the right to dictate to a content creator what the "audience" wants. There's nothing "profoundly selfish" in caring about the many, that's the exact opposite. You could say it's "selfish" to try and get what you want from a content creator when he doesn't want to do it though.

@tastybacon_fred: Certainly, I agree that one person doesn't have the right to boss the content maker around, I never disagreed. What I disliked is the tone TB takes with his audience, and his attitude that basically says "I'm hot shit" while being as unnecessarily cruel as possible whenever some random person decides to be mildly rude. His attitude is an ongoing issue and the worst thing about it is that people excuse it for some perverse, self-loathing reason. Is showing your audience respect really the worst thing ever?

He does show his audience respect, constantly. He thanks them at the end of every single video. So what do you mean by "audience"? Do you mean his actual audience or that one guy? He treats his audience very well, I'm part of that audience, I've never felt mistreated in any way. He has mistreated people that have pushed his buttons in the past. It's not a good trait, but he's only human.

On the topic of the Steam Machine, I find great potential for my needs, which is to bring it over to the homes of friends who don't have a gaming machines or PC gaming machines. My friends and I love playing local and online multiplayer games on my rig, but that thing is such a bitch to lug around, let alone plug in everything, set it up, and then come across the issue of how some games aren't that great a control pad or KBM. Maybe that's not everyone's current need, but it sure is for me.

I'm kinda high right now mind, so it could have been shit for all I know.

Check out "Tasteful, Understated Nerdrage" and "Mattmatosis" for a couple gaming critics on youtube who I think are much more rational and thoughtful than Totalbiscuit.

I find it interesting that Patrick and TB seem to work so well despite having literally the opposite ideals in a lot of ways; especially how to treat an audience. Patrick gave a TED Talk about how it's important not to just shrug off criticism and thoughts from online communities. TB gave us this wonderful quote:

I see nothing wrong with his quote. It seems honest and reasonable.

Then we have fundamentally different beliefs as far as what constitutes "reasonable" discourse. Which is fine, but I think it just highlights why people tend to have polarising opinions on the guy.

Maybe that is the reason why?

I mean, I often judge someone, but when I talk with them I feel like I was wrong. Realizing that makes me talk to people more when I get a 'negative' idea around them to get a better sense of it.

All I remember him doing is acknowledging that there are Youtube personalities like TB, and that they're in a slightly different line of work than Giant Bomb.

On the other hand, Patrick has referred to Pewdiepie repeatedly as a personality that isn't for him but he can see the appeal. I'd be much more surprised to see Pewdiepie on this morning show, since his online persona is basically that of a manic child. TB makes a certain amount of sense.

It's hard to know where to start with TB, I mean not only is he a complete and irrefutable twat, he has the most annoying voice coupled with that cynical attitude. Even if I liked the guy and his conduct, I sure as hell couldn't listen to him. Maybe if you're not British he has more appeal I don't know.

It's made worse that I have to hear him every single day since my brother seemingly idolizes him. Sorry to jump on the hate train but I cannot shift knee-jerk rage whenever these "discussions" come up.

None of that is evidence that he's a terrible human-being. You just don't like him because your little brother annoys you sometimes. That's not a terribly mature way to criticise somebody.

Pretty sure Britain is where most of his viewers come from, so I doubt that's true either.

@lackingsaint: Yes, we get it. You're a person who likes to take something someone said, blow it up into something it isn't, and then preach that you're some kind of saint because you refuse to watch him. Bravo, mate.

How about we all just stop this bitchy pandering to our own egos, and focus on the fact that he was a guest-star on a great podcast? In the scheme of things, does it really matter if we like him or not? Whether someone wants him as a guest on unprofessional Fridays, or not? No.
