@bathala: you're in for such a treat. I watched this for the first time earlier this month and I'm already pumped to watch it again. It is incredibly fun and visually interesting haunted house movie.

House is on HBO MAX under the Criterion section. It's also in their Halloween page under cult classics.

I've never heard of this before, but the minute and a half trailer on YouTube? I think I need to go buy the Criterion Blu-ray now.

This seriously couldn't have come at a better time. I'm currently writing an essay about this for a cult film course, so now I can re-watch with the GB crew's insights to mine :D

Hey y’all, how frightening is this film? From the brief overview it sounds like it might be a little more over the top than scary, which I think I could handle, but generally speaking I’m quite a scaredy cat 😅

I was so pleased to see this in the upcoming section, having just gotten the Hausu criterion blu-ray a few weeks back! Can't wait to listen.

You know you're in for a treat when there are characters named "Kung-Fu," "Sweet," and "Fantasy."

This film is such a delight because it feels like the filmmakers were willing to try out every kind of technique they could think of. And they did it really well!

@tunnelman: I think you'll be okay, since it really isn't a horror film in the classic sense. In fact, it really defies all attempts to assign a single genre to it. The story was partially informed by input from the director's 12-year-old daughter, if that tells you anything.

@abadwind:I had searched it, numerous times, under "house" and "hausu"... my mistake was assuming the icon with the child surrounded by spooky faces was a different movie, and continued to look for the spooky red fox-face. I am a fool.

@akajaybay: My HBOMax doesn't have a criterion section? I was able to find the movie (see above), but I would very much like to have access to a Criterion section.

@chunkmassuhflex Weird they used to have a Criterion page like the other side brands of DC, Crunchyroll etc. But looks like it's gone now. Searching Criterion still seems to bring up stuff from that subset.

Of course not! It's the much more intellectual blood-barfing cat from that goofball haunted house comedy.

I hope you enjoyed the movie!

There is another horror movie from the 80s called House. The sequel has the best subtitle ever: House 2: The Second Story.

And even better, that House 2 from 1987 does not involve the storyline or characters from the 1986 House and instead is a completely separate horror comedy. It truly is a "second story" in a house.

The first half is kinda like like Gath Marenghi's Dark Place, but the gags aren't gags... but yet they sort of still are gags, but not. Most unique movie on Film and 40s yet.

In the mattress scene Alex mentions Deathbed: The bed that eats. Yes it's a real movie and pretty fun, weirdly came out the same year as Hausu too.

To be clear I don't think HBO Max has a "Criterion Section" - those movies are listed under the Turner Classic Movies section. It is there though!

I got out of sync one and this movie made it really hard to find a sync spot again, had to go back and fort and wait for them to talk about something really specific.

Somehow I never got around to watching House, so thanks for the excuse.

Also I guess this explains the piano in Super Mario 64.
