Demo Derby: PlayStation Underground: Volume 2 Issue 4

Hey yo! I don't have a whole lot to add for this particular entry of PlayStation Underground. This issue was the fourth and final issue of the second year (Holiday 1998), which makes it the one directly previous to the most recent Demo Derby (the WCW issue).

The intro video is in fact outtakes from an actual Crash commercials featuring Robbie Knievel and Mark Spitz.

It's interesting how even in just a short of a demo of Shadow Tower, you can see the beginnings of Souls games.

Also, young Stewart Copeland might actually be a time traveling Drew Scanlon.

Am I crazy, or is the audio (on GB voices) a little weird in this? Jeff sounds echoy at times, and there's occasionally some sort of artifacting when people start to speak.

Great episode though, one of the best Demo Derby's so far IMO.

Shadow Tower reminded me of the some of the launch VR games, not really sure why :/

I remember Brave Fencer Musashi being a pretty good game. Don't know whether it holds up or not.

I'm just here to say "Crash rocks!!" Dan's right about Crash 3 having too much gimmicky shit, but Crash 2 was pretty much perfect in every way.

And weird, I always thought One was far superior to Apocalypse. It had a Rage meter!

And on a final note, my buddy saw Head from Korn at our local Denny's at like 2am the other day (they had just played Chicago Open Air). And I nearly jumped out of bed and drove over there.

These just get better and better.

also, crash bandicoot 2 is the best crash bandicoot game. 3 was too gimmicky; i don't care about swimming or motorboating or tiger riding! 2 just added one or two things (polar bear riding) and polished the gameplay of 1 to a mirror sheen.

There's really weird reverb on the team's mics (kind of like if you recorded in a hall) and even some occasional digitization sounding weirdness, wasn't sure if it's intentional or not @drewbert (@stordoff you aren't crazy)

PS @dan the daddy long leg myth has been debunked, a lot of "daddy long legs" arent even spiders and don't produce venom at all and the actual spiders have never been proven to have toxic venom.

They totally played this exact Tomb Raider demo on another demo disk,I can't recall which one, but I swear I've seen them fumble around with it before...

@7x_: Honestly Korn has been playing it pretty safe ever since their dubstep album two albums ago. It's pretty much just: start with heavy-ish simple guitar riff, transition into quiet verse, bridge the verse and the chorus with said riff, write a ballad style chorus with simple guitars, maybe have a quiet middle-part, maybe have Jon do his fake-ass death metal scream because he can't actually scream anymore, outro with the guitar riff, stop.

I was a big Korn fan when I was 13-15, but I can't really stand them outside of nostalgia now. They still have a fairly large devout fanbase though, and even their new stuff manages to get millions of views within a month or two. (Never listened to the other bands that were part of their scene).

Now Depeche Mode, there's a band that stands the test of time.

Great Demo Derby! Although it seems like to me that the crew don't always remember specific things from past demo derbies. I was hoping Dan was gonna reference the first ever Demo Derby because the same Crash 3 Demo and the Tomb Raider III demo were on that Pizza Hut Demo Disc, but its been about 2 years since then and it would be unlikely for Dan an Drew to remember or even care.

God every time i see Crash here i'm reminded of the countless hours spent with friends with the best kart game of all time, CTR

Holy crap, just started replaying Shadow Tower myself. Such an amazing game.

Say what you will about Korn but they won 2 Grammys and have sold over 35 million records. Not that it means anything but still they have had a pretty successful career. Also Dan, not all Korn fans at that time were assholes, my friends and I were nice people. I am more willing to say that I was a fan of Korn then of admitting I thought that Limp Bizkit were cool. Turns out, Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water was totally lame......who knew!?!

EDIT: Crash Bandicoot 2 still totally holds up 100%, the others not so much. I can go back to it at literally any point and have a good time. One's difficulty curve is definitely messed up in parts, and 3 is just kind of bad, but 2 is a literal masterpiece.

EDIT: One is *way* better than Apocalypse.
