This is going to sound like some weird touchstones to draw on, but the backgrounds remind me of a cross between Dragon's Lair, and Elemental Gimmick Gear on the Dreamcast.

I've got nothing against anthro characters but the character design in this just seems to be a little too... deviantart-y for my taste

regardless of his background i just see a very well animated game with some awesome gameplay hooks and not a hint of the "furry anime garbage" you guys are suggesting. it just looks like a fucking awesome game. i don't care about his background or how many anthropomorphic animals he drew in the past (who are at worst wearing a bikini and not fucking each other). i'll leave it at that despite the fact that i'm saddened by some of the ignorance in this thread.

i'll most likely be enjoying the crap out of this personally. congrats to dean/noogy, hope this is successful as hell!

Game looks good, though I am feeling like applying my palm to my face at all the people complaining about "furries" - really people? I didn't hear you cry foul in Skyrim for example.

Game-wise, this looks interesting. Unfortunately, just like so many anime fighters with weird art that makes me slightly uncomfortable to be near, I probably couldn't bring myself to ever play it.

Looks pretty awesome ...... but i have to see for myself if i will enjoy this game .

At this point, it's just looking like trolls saying this shit just to rustle jimmies. Can't wait for school to start again so they'll all head back to their grade schools, and we can talk about the game in peace.

I just wish people wouldn't write this off, but there's nothing that can be done about that other than to drop my 15 bucks and support it myself. I can see the design differences between Mickey and this, but this isn't the dirty kind of anthropomorphism regardless...oh well...marketplace needs to freaking update now.

My brain seems to work like that just fine. There are weird ass people doing weird ass shit all the time. I see/hear about it and move on with my life.

When seeing characters like this, I never think of all the "furry" mess until someone in a comment or something starts talking about it. I couldn't care less that they are animals. I just care that the game looks cool/fun.

That said, at least the Khajiit don't look EXACTLY like bad Deviantart "art". Trust me, I've BEEN. I *know* these things.

Wait a minute, when a game like Batman Arkham Asylum comes along with an embarrassing, horrendous art style but virtually ever other aspect of the game is superb it is one of the best games this generation (which I agree with) but when another game has a different "questionable" art style it's too furry for people to play, too funny. Too me it looks like an anime adaption of Goof Troop if Goof Troop had some crazy high fantasy episode.

I am pretty sure you don't get it, 4chan users aren't 'bashing' the idea, it's that a sub culture of people are dressing up as such and being linked to weird sexual encounters, and that one fact is so weird and memorable, when we see a speaking cat with an upright body, we remember the horrible furries. You just can't say "I'm not going to remember this awful thing 4chan, because I want to like this thing right now in a game." Your brain doesn't work like that. I am going to ignore that CoD analogy, because it made no sense in this topic.

I was expecting the main character to be more of a stoic anime badass considering his design, but he seems pretty normal. That flying squirrel thing has an annoying voice though.

Not sure if I'm into everything that this game's putting down, but the controls definetly seem smooth enough, as do the animations.

Before today I had practically zero interest in this game. But after seeing this QL and other videos I think I'm sold. Looks like the Summer of Arcade saved the best for last.

It's so surreal to finally be able to play this though...really surreal.

Summer of Arcade has been mostly disappointing so far, but good to see it's closing strong. Can't wait to play this.

Do you have any examples of good looking 2D sidescrollers so we can tell you how wrong you are?

Gameplay looks rad, and I love the animations and background art, but... there is something very deviantART about some of the character models

Silly commenters... deviantArt is not an adjective.

I think this looks pretty awesome, gonna check out the free trial before deciding to make a final purchase though.

As for the character designs they don't bug me all that much actually. I guess growing up with shows like Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, etc. got me used to anthropomorphic talking animals. Overall I'd say the aesthetics are very pleasing to the eye and that is definitely something that piques my interest when it comes to 2D games. Heck 3D games too, but that's going off topic.

I'd be totally into this game if they're weren't furries in it.

I gotta say, I don't get it as far as the art goes. The character art especially just puts me off, it looks cheap. Game looks good otherwise, but yeah, it's kind of off putting.

Edit: I don't understand why people can't understand how people don't like the art. Different tastes people.

@Osaladin: but the main problem is everyone is dismissing it with blanket statements like deviantART and furries, not even giving it a chance and just writing it off as some sick fetish thing or something. that's why i'm so proud of the giantbomb crew in that they're actually looking at it objectively. i can understand not being a fan of the art when taking it in objectively, but just saying it sucks through association with less savory forms of "art" isn't helping anything.

Technically speaking any art style can look "bad" based purely on ones tastes and interests. I think every single modern realistic game looks bad in an artistic sense despite knowing how much time and money goes in to making all those high res brick and dirt textures look so much like real bricks and dirt lol. But as for this? fuck yeah it looks great. Characters faces could use a little more variety but I think dood deserves a pass on nitpicks since he made the whole fucking game.
