E3 2014: We're Talking Over the Sony Press Conference

Video isn't working for me...

Saw this in a theater with a few friends. Was a great conference and I think they knocked it out of the park. Then I listen to the after show podcast and every jaded member of Giant Bomb apparently hated it and even start pooping on No Man's Sky? Lame, guys. Lame.

Something weird? No Drive Club. That was the weirdest omission in my opinion. I also expected an obligatory God of War CG trailer, but whatever.

Best conference of the show, so far. More games I am going to be playing only on PS4. At Microsoft's I felt it was reminding me which PS4 games I was playing and the other "Cool" stuff was a CG trailer that told and showed nothing. Other than Evolve (not shown) I saw several things I know I'm buying this year and next, which is nice.

I've been playing Playstation Now for several weeks; it works and works better on PS4 than PS3. I've played shooters, platformers, puzzlers, and fighting games with no noticeable lag or delay on PS4. The PS3 had some lag when I first played it but I haven't touched PS3's Now since PS4's launched.

I was fine with the length of the Sony presser. They showed and announced 32 games compared to Microsoft's 19. I say that's a win, personally.

So much jade. Ah well.

Alex freaking out about that female hostage, and then whining about violence against video game animals kind of pissed me off. No one's going to go shoot an elephant because Far Cry 4 takes place in Tibet, dude. It's not real. Relax.

Knocked what out of the park?

Andrew House was FAR too smug, more than he had any right to be, Sony still taking cheap shots at Microsoft who were all about games, games, games and then Sony goes on to talk about TV and Movies?

They relied on Destiny, Batman and what was barely a teaser trailer for Uncharted, all they did was show multiplatform games, games that were announced last year that you still cant play yet and indie games.

They should rename themselves to "Soon"y, and this is coming from someone who bought PS4 on day one ready for the day Uncharted would be released.

I realize this is all opinions, but Sony's conference was quite a bit longer, and they spent the same amount of time during the first part, if not longer, talking about games as Microsoft did during their conference. Also, you're leaving out Bloodborne, conveniently enough, which is probably a bigger exclusive than anything shown on the One. They did a pretty good job.

Far Cry 4 looked sooooo fun. Could use more dubstep though.

Depends if you think the Souls games are the second coming of christ, personally I think they are VERY overrated, not sure why people hold From Software so highly.

The games I liked most last gen were Naughty Dog's and the Souls games. So yeah, I think they're good. Bloodborne is probably a bigger exclusive than anything we saw from Microsoft.

I can't help but be bummed that Bloodborne is a Sony exclusive ... especially since they did a good job with the PC port for DS2 :/

This conference was so dull... and I'm so sick and tired of indie games. These games are flash in the pan, 15 minute, oh look another meme or style ripped off from yesteryear over and over again.

Where are the games that actually drive the system?

Destiny doesn't look all that hot at the moment. However, The Order(though very contextual) looked phenomenal as well as Batman...but I can't help but feel they left all their games back at home and decided to talk about nonsensical services and gadgets that no one cares about.

And why haven't any of the system OS changes been discussed. I don't care if there are movies on demand or whatever crap that won't be accessible at all nor worth the money. Why can't we stream video and movies yet? Why is there almost 0 applications on this thing? Why did they spend so much time on this goofy Playroom crap. This felt SO Microsoft hit/miss from before with their Kinect and dull boring services.

And why why why would you show another trailer for the Battlefield game? We already saw it...take that time to show something else that will wow the crowd.

I honestly don't know what bone head exec decided that they should advertise and market during the conference, as it's one of the primary moments to display the life blood of the system: The Games.

Extremely disappointed...

Wow, listen to that snark from Sony.. :/ This was presented fairly poorly and they were showing mostly multi-platform games but pretending they were exclusive. Far Cry 4 and The Order looked really cool.

I'm not sold on the concept of No Man's Sky, it looks awesome, but I don't have time for pointless exploration.

That Layden guy is doing a lot of hand gestures, he's probably taken a couple of classes for talking on stage. Sony was cool, but that Ubisoft conference was fun to watch.

When isn't he? Both him and Alex are insufferable in these. On the other end though, Patrick's positive overreactions are just as annoying... So... Vinny's great.

It's a shame because I loved the previous 'talk over press conference' streams.

I too would cry about Bloodborne being an exclusive if I didn't understand that Sony were financing and co-developing the thing, and that they had just like with Demon's Souls, hired From to develop it.

Holy shit this became boring as fuck when "Mr. Hands" came on stage. Otherwise a good conference. Grim Fandango a clear highlight.

I don't know how you can say Andrew House was being smug. Don Matrick is smug. Phil Spencer is smug, and he doesn't even have a reason to be, he always has the dumb grin on his face.

Yes, Sony has won again. Why? Grim Fandango, guys. You just can't top that.

Yeah as much as I think Grim Fandango is a wonderful game, I don't think it's too hard to top a nearly 20 year old uprezzed adventure game.

I understand the desire to show off the panoramic set, but why must the director of the video stream switch to the ultra-wide shot just as a game/demo hits a point where it's showing off new functionality?

I will never understand Jeff's severe dislike of Sony's first party games.

Here's a bunch of multiplatform games, Playstation TV and Uncharted. Kinda bummed about this years E3 so far.

When Patrick and Jeff go, they f&*^kin go! Miss that in depth discussion part of the podcast but nice that it still comes up for these big events.

@deathfromace: Like I mentioned in my original comment, I was listening to the post-E3 show that had Eric Pope, John Drake, Mark Macdonald (sp?), etc and people were being pretty snarky and naysaying the game.

@woocifer If that's all you think of indie games then you aren't playing many indie games and you didn't pay attention to the ones that absolutely were not like that shown on the stage, even in video form.

@magnum45 I love Jeff to death but sometimes his cynicism and "I'm jaded about everything!" approach really bums me out. The thing that bums me out even more is that Vinny is no longer on the Bombcast and he was the guy most energetic and excited about video games.

@thelegendofmart Because those games are good and people love them. Some people think the same thing about Mass Effect, Halo, Call of Duty, or any other popular franchise. Fans of those games have blinders about their issues, or don't care, just like Souls fans.

@icantbestopped: well from what i got he was mostly saying HE didnt wanna shoot the elephants and the tigers but the idea for an interactive flag of sorts is kinda neant

and really there is a HUGE difference between the hostage/flag in rainbowsix and shooting animals in a videogame setting. the flag makes you feel either super awesome or super evil you have control of a hostage your job as rainbow six is to come in kick ass and save her ass in farcry the animals serve as just ways to cause chaos and killing them kinda left a sour taste in my mouth the legendary hunts were great but going out and killing tigers for fun was crazy and i realized that. i mean hell i got all the ammo pouches and gun slots right after the first mission then the wallet and loot sacks and it was kinda crazy but it made the game also super easy

When did everyone get so negative? Good games are coming out and 2015 is looking great. Nothing mindblowing, but that's ok. Video games are fun people.

@algnome: @icantbestopped Except what you're forgetting Algnome is that female hostages in military games is not a trope. Most hostages in multiplayer games, or specifically modern military games, are males and have typically always been males. There are some games like Rainbow Six and a couple of others where its a mix of males and female but a lot of games only have male hostages. This is not a big deal and just another thing for Anita to complain about on Twitter, which she did more than enough.

I thought it was a pretty damn good conference outside of Bendis' show plug (and I LOVE Bendis' work) and the Uncharted/Order/Bloodborne trailers being like 4 seconds long.

If you're bummed out about the slate of games shown off yesterday across all four conferences, maybe find another hobby, gang. (That includes a couple of people talking over this video. Snark overload.) I really don't understand what people want anymore.

I'm still tossing up what to get but after this E3 I am leaning more towards the Xbone. The only exclusive I will be sad to miss is project beast, everything else I can pretty much play on PC if I want. Xbox seems to have better exclusives and better services to countries that, you know... aren't America or Japan.

Having said that I will still wait until the PS4/Xbone bundles are under $600 in Australia FFS. Until then I'll go without playing the fairly limited and average games that are out on consoles for the moment.

Also, no Fallout 4 has me thinking this whole E3 is a failure.

@algnome: I doubt it...I mean...the same arguments can be made for Gears of War and Halo as well, but those are still trucking. There's still a lot they can do with God of War if they follow plot threads they left hanging, but I don't know. I used to be a massive God of War fan but they fell off for me.

@bbk@the_bumble I completely agree. Too much cynicism, too much snark. Watching the post conference show I was like...why do you play games you hate them all? Even though they seemed positive about No Man's Sky during the conference they started shitting on it afterwards.

@mrhammeh: Is it just this video that's not working, or is it all the videos on the website? None of the videos are working for me unless I use Youtube...

Compared to Microsoft, Sony easily was better. More games, more interesting games.

Sony had the highest highs but FUCK that middle part was terrible. Microsoft was pretty great if a little too predictable. They didn't have any lows though.
