Nice! It's been years since I played any DOD. It'll be interesting to see Drew's take on it again!

Me and my friend use to play this game constantly back in the day, was probably the real first multiplayer game I played, so damn good. I always preferred Day of Defeat over Counter Strike. Shame it's not really had a good modernization since.

I played this game competitively for about 3-4 year, the competitive scene for this game actually JUST died off about a year ago.

This is definitely my favorite FPS ever, and it is so cool seeing a video of it on GB, interesting to see that it isn't just crazy people who remember this game. :D

Yay DoD! One of my favourite mp shooters too! Valve, allow a new one please. :'(

O, and Drew mentions the Specialists too. Double Action: Boogaloo is the spiritual successor of that and is free to play on Steam.

Also, the map Donner was called Thunder in the beta.

I used to play DoD:S a lot, until they put out that stupid patch with TF2 elements (achievements, kill cams) and removed contact with teammates.

Also, I think Drew trying to climb the ranks of (or simply trying) the CS:GO competitive mode would make for an entertaining premium feature.

I always preferred the Quake 2 mod D-Day: Normandy over DOD.

Loading Video...

I also had way more fun with Counter-Strike Beta 5 than any later versions, and kinda dropped off when it got it's full release.

I remember the good ol' days when the only thing the internet argued over is whether CoD or Day of Defeat had the better online competitive scene...

@univarn: Day of Defeat clearly, it is the one that is gonna last in the end, no one is gonna care about CoD in 10 years! ;)

DoD and CoD were both at CPL. CoD had one tournament where less than half of the teams showed up I think, while DoD continued on strong (well, shortly though since CPL died and DoD:S came out). Clearly DoD > CoD!

Drew/Mary/Andy are a pretty great group.

Mary not being a regular on a podcast is unforgivable.

DoD was one of my favorite mods back in the day, second only to TFC. Never really could get into DoD:S, though.

So I'm pretty normally thick skinned especially since I am myself a Marine Veteran, but I question the appropriateness of releasing this on Memorial Day. Doesn't really offend me, but I know many vets who are much more sensitive to the subject than I.

Mary loses points for saying it was an American soldier about to throw a grenade in to Drew's head.

The soldier throwing the grenade is clearly a British soldier.

Entire video is ruined.

I too learned most of my German from games.

This is pretty much the game that got me into PC gaming. When I first got a PC capable of Half-Life along with a cable modem, I messed around with deathmatch briefly, then played Counter-Strike for a few days, but then some older guys I was friends with insisted I check out DoD, which was still pretty early in free mod stage at the time. Countless hours sunk into this game. caen2 forever.

Wasn't as into it once it went full retail/official, and DoD: Source didn't catch on with me in the same way, but still stuck with it for a while. This game definitely owns a percentage of my life.

As someone who played many hundreds of hours of Day of Defeat right from its first release but not a single minute of DoD:Source or even the version being played here this is a surreal video. It's familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.

To me Half-Life 1 is still the pinnacle of the video game modding era especially in terms of first person shooters.

Shoutouts to Red Orchestra as well. Great mod and a fantastic full release as well.

Special thanks to Mary Kish and Andy Bauman for this cross-site synergy.

GEE THANKS guys for reminding me when games were actually GOOD and didn't squeeze you for every dime with crap DLC. I really wish they'd do a HD Remake of this game, where are the guys that made this now? NO those Red Army things and other derivatives are not great games, we need a NEW DOD.

Man me and my friends played this a lot when were 16 or so and it was very early in its release. My friend got so good he was on our "national" team. Damn do I feel old. Great mod though and the first competitive World War II shooter I can remember, well before that there were medal of honor for the PlayStation, but they weren't in the same league.

Never actually played original Day of Defeat. It's great to see that people are still playing it though. I used to play a lot of Call of Duty: United Offensive multiplayer (i.e. before Call of Duty sold out). I wonder if people are still playing that...

This was fun to see. I've heard Drew mention Day of Defeat plenty of times over the years, but this was something I never knew about back then (and honestly, I probably won't go back). It's weird that seeing WWII guns in bombed out cities brings back nostalgia at this point. Maybe I should finally work on World at War as a throwback piece.

I don't remember Andy being in any videos before, but he was a cool guest. And Mary's always a treat!

DoD: Source was pretty great for that first month when it came out, Red Orchestra 2 is the one to play now though. Remember Natural Selection any one? Was amazing, shame 2 sucked because of that lame engine they made.

I really liked RTCW (not the crappy ET version) and Rainbow Six: 3 Raven Shield on the PC, which had an AMAZING Team Deathmatch. Joint Operations in 2004 was amazing too, so much better than BF2, shame those guys went under.

Planetside was amazing in 2003, shame SOE ruined it and then made the shoddy Planetside 2.

Insurgency which came out last year and was based on the Insurgency mod from like 2007 is the best online FPS today. It looks like any other FPS and puts people off with those generic graphics, but my god it plays so well.

America's Army 2 was also AMAZING! Still one of the most innovative online FPS games out there, shame it got so overlooked. It had progression way before any one else, you'd have to do 30 min medical tests to get the ability to heal people. So good and tactical, been shut down for a long time though.

You mean sick custom gun skins like CS:GO!

Check out Red Orchestra: Rising Storm if you're looking for a kinda-realistic, heavily team focused WW2 game. The "territory mode" servers tend to be better since the game carries between levels so people tend to work together more.

I also was mainly a CS player, but had a ton of fun in DoD too with my friends. I felt DoD gave me better aim in CS since the main gun is a single shot. It was also super fun to camp in DoD since enemies would respawn instead of the round just ending when they all died.

I also learned the German words for Go go go! (Los Los Los) and Grenade! (Granate).

Holy crap. Forgot about the glider stuff. My memories of this game are a massive jumble of glider intros and adding machine guns and adding bipods and when they changed the victory music for each side.

Man I loved this game.

Where did all the WWII games go? I got into history because of these games, now we just got dumb robots and zombies. *sigh* I miss video games.
