Man this takes me back.

I never played much of this but this is taking me back to playing the Heat Of Battle mod for the first Call Of Duty. Long live the Scots Guards clan. sG|Killfest| reporting in.

Also I have that monitor Andy is talking about.

Day of Defeat: Source is freaking garbage and I pity the fool who actually chooses to play that over the original and/or thinks it's better. (You're crazy)

Only reason I don't play DoD anymore because like many older games, so many servers resort back to playing 24/7 "Insert popular map here." In this case, it's Avalanche. Kind of like why I left Battlefield 2 behind.

Also, I'm pretty sure that in the Retail version patch, they gave Caen to the new British faction or am I wrong? I'll guess there was an imbalance players figured out and servers reverted back to the US for every map. (Come to think of it, I believe the Brits had less weapons, right?)

You three should defiantly do more mod round up videos. Maybe one for TFC and TF2.

Oh my god. So nice to see this. I played literally thousands of hours of DoD, first on the 1.3 beta in 2001 until about 2011. It still survives in little servers here and there but the clan that was my one true online home has sadly disappeared.

Anybody ever play Battle for Europe? I think Drew mentioned he had joined at some point. Playing a risk-style metagame with 12 hour battles every Saturday was truly epic.

Mary is, possibly, my favourite person who shows up on this site haha. She reminds me of my best friend. Combine that with Drew, and Andy, and this is the perfect QL (or bombastica)

This came out when I didn't really play PC games much. I remember people talking a lot about it, though. Not sure who this Andy fellow is, but he and Mary were cool to listen to and Drew always brings it.

GEE THANKS guys for reminding me when games were actually GOOD and didn't squeeze you for every dime with crap DLC.

Yeah, games today are fucking terrible and I hate them.

Man, I already miss that brief window between arcades nickel and diming you with their bullshit difficulty and then the rise of preorder bonuses and PC/console games that nickel and dime you with DLC/F2P nonsense.

For about 1-2 decades, we had it made.

I love Drew for mentioning that "clip" and "magazine" are not interchangeable. People calling a magazine a clip annoys me more than it should.

It still has the Brits on Caen, this was just a modification to it I believe (it's still using the UK flags for the points). The Brits don't have a machine gunner class yea (the Bren is more in line with the BAR and STG44).

It's a shame Avalanche is the popular map. It's a bit unbalaced (was bugged too in the beta where nades would turn into proximity mines between the Allies first and second flag). Anzio is way better as the 'standard' DoD map and there're like 5+ official and user made maps that are better too (Chemille, Harrington, Lennon, Saints, Railroad ect). That and the crappy extra sounds/mods most servers have is keeping me away from the original. Source is indeed not that fantastic compared to the HL1 version, but at least it has some okay servers. Plus, it's still better than most other shooters. :)

O, and one more hot DoD tip: you can't 'cook' nades the conventional way in DoD(:S). You have to throw the nade (on the ground) which will set off the 5 second fuse, pick it up again and then do the final throw.

My brother got me into Counter Strike really young (too young honestly), but I gravitated to Day of Defeat and Team Fortress Classic almost immediately. So many hours on Avalanche. Oddly enough, I can't stand competitive multiplayer shooters anymore but I had tons of fun with those two back in the day.

Fan of this game? To Drew and anyone else, Verdun on steam is pretty close to classic DoD in some surprising ways.

I loved these games. People act like DoD:S is an abomination, but 1.3 and Source are both amazing. I had a DoD clan for years, from the original up until a couple years ago. It's the only shooter that I've been serious about playing competitively. I wonder if I've still got it... We should set up a play date sometime for either of the DoD games.

Yeah, that stuff is the worst. Never was a huge DOD fan, but my favorite thing when playing D-Day Normandy was checking out the new maps the community made. Whenever possible I joined servers with maps I hadn't seen before, or at least played on servers with progression (where if the allies win on the Omaha map they progress inland to a forest map etc. - Battlefield 2 had a similar mode which nobody plays anymore). I strongly dislike playing the same map over and over.

(My thoughts: oh this will be a sweet father daughter memory, i wonder what terms of endearment sound like in German?)

Mary: "swinehund, which meant pig dog..."

Lmao... great video all around. Good job Drew n Crew!

I used to play DoD a lot. The thing I liked most about DoD was the maps. They felt really special and I don't think I've ever seen an FPS game with similar map design.

I haven't visited DoD since I quit playing a decade ago and I suspect the maps were imbalanced and you probably can't get away with that stuff anymore. Maybe it's like WoW Vanilla. The time I spent on WoW Vanilla was magical but if I went back playing Vanilla now, I would be miserable when the nostalgia wears off.

DoD and CS. Some of the best times I've had gaming. Miss those games.

The source engine killed those franchises. I never really clicked with either of the new incarnations. All source games feel swimmy to me.

I played DoD competitively for several years starting from about 2002. I was about 16 or so and this game and its community were a huge part of my life growing up. I met so many people in DoD and its community sites (nineteeneleven.org and eventually gotfrag.com) that I still speak with on an almost daily basis 13 years later. DoD Source launch was so hyped for everyone in the competitive community it was truly heart breaking that the development team very purposefully went in a more casual direction and took a very strong dislike to the competitive community and their opinions. For instance the recoil and spray patterns are not centre weighted like any skill based shooter would have, they were literally randomized patterns so aiming was far less important which led to a feeling of randomness in the shooting. This and several other factors made the game worthless for competitive play and the scene died almost over night. Seeing the resurgence of Count Strike with CSGO gets me really hopeful that something similar will happen with DoD... but something tells me I'll be waiting for a very long time for that..

Thanks for making the video Drew and showing off this wonderful piece of gaming history.

I was into Medal of Honor and Battlefield 1942, but it was cool to see what DoD is all about. I'd only heard about it a few years ago, and now I'm kinda bummed I missed out on it. Thanks for doing this video. Great cast and great overall segment.

I'm going to put it out there, Jeff said on a UPF or demo derby recently 'what happened to the 60 fps dream?', well personally I think Source/havok has a lot to answer for. HL2 was a fantastc game, but basing gameplay mechanics around physics puzzles and devoting so much resources to accurately map barrels knocking about has ruined competitive shooters.

There was something fluid and smooth about the way goldsrc games played which you can't get anymore. The balance between aesthetics and the way a game 'feels' has been too heavily shifted towards making a game super pretty.... Or maybe I'm nearly 30 and GAMES AREN'T GOOD ANYMORE, BAAH MOBAS
