Old Games: Encyclopedia Bombastica: Day of Defeat

I was heavy into DoD long, long ago. I played with the EZ-Company clan and my go to gun was the K98. I stopped playing when source came out.

I loved this damn game good lord.

I was just playing this last night. There is still a surprising amount of people playing this in China, and they're really good.

I used to play so much of this game.

So much that I am cringing at Drew's slow jogs into the open and stopping at stairs or back alleys to stay in the main thoroughfare.

We asked for more Danny and we got it, including bomcbcast and UPF slots. We want more Mary too!

So now we know that Mary ist eine kleine schweinhund in addition to being the queen of rats. Also always be Mary... ing? No wait.. the more Mary the merrier?

Also we need more cross-over content between GB and GS. Not just Mary though I think she and Danny work really well with the duders but I'd like to see all the GS guys make guest appearances. That was what made Whiskey Media so great was all the different pairings of people for QLs. Especially now that they are split up between the coasts we get a lot of the same pairings and it gets a little stale.

Never could get into DoD. It was always CS and Sven-Coop for me, then The Specialists later on. BrainBread was alright too. And Scientist Slaughterhouse. And The Opera. And Action Half-Life. And Half-Life Gold. And Earth's Special Forces.

Oh Half-Life 1 mods, what a wonderful time that was.

I acknowledge this is some serious reaching, but there was a subset of skinheads called redskins who were anti-fascist and anti-racist so maaaaaybe it is a reference to that?

If you combine my play times of Day of Defeat and Day of Defeat: Source I've played more there than any other game or mod. So, so many good times and friends made over the years.

After I built a PC for the first time, I ended up getting the original Call of Duty. That was the first time I experienced multiplayer over the internet, and I had a blast. A few months later I picked up some Half-Life pack that included a bunch of Half-Life-related stuff, including Day of Defeat. It was weird to play DoD at first because the graphics were a bit of a step back from CoD, but eventually I had just as much fun with it.

It was fun to see it again here.

I never got into online MP games, so it's cool to hear Mary, Andy, and Drew reminisce and learn some things like how this did more realistic things about reloading, and how Tripwire came to be (only have played Killing Floor 2 from them).

Sure, but I still plan to yell it if I ever get gunned down. :P I have a whole slew of enemy barks to use as my final words/battle cry, depending on the situation.

What's especially strange is that I installed and played a few matches of this game only a couple days before this video went up. I was happy to at least see one server that had real people still playing on it.

According to my Steam history it was the first game I "owned" on Steam—which probably means it was the first I linked to Steam when they switched away from the WON.

Seriously? They talk about learning German from games, and nobody mentions 'Mein leben'? COME ON!

I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for doing this about DOD. As many people have stated, it is a fantastic game and one I know I spent hours on end playing.

@poser: There is Red Orchestra 2, came out a few years ago. Its a pretty solid WW2 shooter, took pc gamers shooter of the year.

This has probably been said already but damn it Mary, that's a British soldier, not an American one!

Drew, that helicopter game was wrong about what rocket and missile are in German.

Also Andy should be on more things, he always seems like a cool guy when he's on The Lobby.

My gamer tag is 100% from when DoD first came out and also i thought those Absolut _____ ads were super clever. I would have your ass with the k98.

This game was so good.

I used to actually be pretty good at this.

This has gotten me to reinstall DODS, Getting back into it, I remember one time when I was in Jr High I got 83 kills 3 deaths in a game. Honestly the game is still great and there's nothing much like it!

This was a great game. Used to play in clans with my friend and cousin all the time. Going to cal-i and cpl competitions... Good times. I don't remember the exact version but I started playing nonstop since the version before 2.0 (1.28?) just remember each class had their own movement speeds (heavier weapon classes were so slow). Played this like it was my job all the way up till source was officially released... Which was a huge disappointment. Anyone else who was part of the dod:s beta can tell you it was amazing... Then a few months before commercial release, they changed everything into the arcade'y crappy that the game is now. Hopefully they will some day so a proper sequel but I wouldn't hold my breath as the original main developer left after 1.3 (steam version) was released and his father took over for transition to source.

All in all, truly a great game that holds many fond memories. Maybe we could get a giantbomb server for DoD :-)

Turns out Gunship! is on Steam, so I loaded it up to see! Here's what the guy actually says (as far as I can tell):

• Wähle Raketen = Selecting rockets (I misheard it as "Akaten")
• Wähle Rakete = Selecting missile
• Ziele Flugeinheit = Targeting aircraft (I think this is what he says)

@drewbert: Seems correct. Although Ziele auf Flugeinheit (translating to "aiming AT aircraft") would be the complete sentence, I suspect this falls into the realm of video game German (Which is much more entertaining than actual German, at least to German ears ;)

Next on Encyclopedia Bombastica, Battlefield 1942.
