@disquisedjustin: You can choose random weather or real weather in the settings, but I'm fairly certain that real weather is the default.

$70 million dollars lead to this moment. Seriously that chase sequence is all I remember from the ads. I thought the game was just constant chases through alleyways.

Also Chibi probably died on Disc 2, poor Chibi.

@disquisedjustin: Cool write-up. It's nice to see that the game still appeals to a certain type of person.

That looked... a lot like VF stuff. Is there actually a really deep fighting game in there somewhere, shenmue fans? Cause those were neutral reversals of punches and the way you dodge in VF.

The concept of Shenmue started as a Virtua Fighter RPG with Akira as the protagonist. I believe that it turned into Shenmue when the scope of the game changed. That's why the battle system resembles Virtua Fighter so much.

Looked like it was setting up for a little bit of Dirty Harry at the end.

He must have meant that The Critic made most other cartoons not funny by comparison.

The fighting system doesn't just "resemble" Virtua Fighter. It is literally a modified version of the Virtua Fighter 2 engine. So yes, there is actually a very satisfying amount of depth and variation to the fighting in the game, which is why it's a shame that they are going to button-mash the whole way through it :p

That caption for the video reminds me of an early Punisher MAX comic in which a mafia tough is pushed out of a 3rd story window onto a wrought-iron fence, and when Punisher sees him, his inner monologue is:

"You have got to be fucking kidding me."

@gregalor: The whole "impressive back in the day"-argument doesn't really count for much unless you already have strong nostalgic feelings about it.

You say that as if someone should be expected to enjoy any game that's nearly two decades old as if it were a modern game.

There are plenty of games from the 90's that anyone can pick up and play as if they were a modern game. Shenmue is not one of them, if that's what you are implying. And I don't even think this game looks terrible.

That wasn't what was implied. There are many games that are old that you can't pick up and play as if they were modern games. A game that does play as well as more recent games doesn't mean it wasn't doing impressive things when it came out.

The Dudley Moore "honest advertising genius" movie in question was 1990's Crazy People which was partially filmed here in Roanoke, VA (my uncle worked construction on it).

I sifted through all of the comments to see if anyone else remembered this (and somehow missed it in the first ten or so the first time through). Crazy People is great.

Hilarious episode guys! I feel the ER is really hitting its stride in the last few episodes and this one here.

It took me maybe 5 tries on that QTE to catch Jimmy, was very impressed by Vinny actually. The timing is so tight. Also got floored by that "skinhead" but he is beatable.

Rolling through the bulk of these later episodes in a single day is proving to be the best thing.

In this episode, Gollum eats Vinny's ticket.
