@alex is wrong. The game is literally using a Virtual Fighter engine for the fighting sequences. It's by Yu and AM2 and the game was going to be a Virtua Fighter game originally. Shenmue is awesome but man so frustrating to watch how wrong they play it,then again not the best game for a ED. Shenmue is a game you explore slowly and shenmue fans when replaying the game always find a new event that didn't happen in the last playthrough. 17 years later and fans still discover new things.

@zemadhatter It has been scatter shot last few months for sure. The Quick looks even been getting bad. All these random games I never heard of but skip stuff like DQ7 and SMTIV on 3DS or DQ builders in a unfinished.

Plus there is that guy near the end of the fight who must be about 10 foot tall with the crazy long reach. It took me about 5 tries when this game came out to beat him, every one else was fine just when i got to him it was impossible

@2-d: It's basically a simpler and modified version of Virtua Fighter. I have no idea why Alex thinks it's not like any other fighting game. It's certainly not as tight and removes the jump moves (considering you can basically jump about 15 feet in the air in those old games, I can see why they'd remove it). The last Virtua Fighter was so fucking good, I do wonder what they'll do for Shenmue 3 seeing how they have to start from scratch so they can't really lift their old work and put it to use in a new engine.

Granted Goro's theme is perfect, but aside from that I don't understand why there are midi songs in this game. Did they run out of memory or disc space or something? Can't have been budget.

It's weird because the orchestral soundtrack is great. Shame it's not more prominent. Like, I'm not sure when this music is even used in the game. Intro and credits? I am not aware of its places and lies.

Although you can probably also see why this would support the notion that parts of this game are too opaque and obscure. I would argue to a point that doesn't make sense for a game that requires you to spend so much time waiting.

The game is basically of an era where Simon's Quest design sensibilities met open world design. While that leads to some issues, when I played it I didn't particularly mind or even notice. And not just because I was like 14. Shenmue was a wildly ambitious and experimental game that did a lot of new, different, impressive things. I think it deserves to be remembered in that context. This playthrough has been helpful in updating my perspective of Shenmue, but what people (such as myself) see when they look at it now, doesn't change what it once was.

Some aspects of it I continue to think of as commendable. It's not just nostalgia that made me throw money at Shenmue III. Like for instance, there's no waypoints. Makes it so the game has to be designed in a completely different, more organic fashion. Shenmue stumbles some with that, but the concept of naturally detectiving and intuiting your way to places and familiarizing yourself with the world instead of just going from waypoint to waypoint, is an idea I think is cool.

@lovcol: I mean, it is a modified version of the engine, to allow for fighting multiple opponents in a 3D space and removing jumping. So it's not exactly VF2 and I suppose I shouldn't have used the word "literally" if that's what you're trying to pin me on. But it is based on that engine. The game even began life as a Virtua Fighter RPG, and Ryo was the main character Akira, before it became it's own project. You can read about it in almost any Shenmue write-up. This is a decent one.

Vinny was right to think of using the Motorcycle, but he missed the A prompt on the door; he didn't need to talk to Akemi-san first to trigger the option to use a Motorcycle. In regards to the bike handling, I think it was intentionally designed to feel like playing Hang-On.

You totally don't have to ask the lady in the bar to find out you need a motorcycle. If you spend some time with Ryo's friends during the game you find out that one of them owns a motorcycle. I never did any of the asking around Dobuita stuff they did in this video, always went straight to Naoyuki. Actually it's pretty cool to see that you can find out about that in a completely different way.

Please tell me they eventually make the Hang-On connection.

Also, Vinny was doomed to motorcycle failure within the first five seconds when he was messing around. That motorcycle segment doesn't give you much leeway at all.

This is where it really hits home that some of the stuff in the Arcade isn't just for dicking around, but to train you for things that are in Shenmue.

About the theory that Terry's voice is done by a pro: Every actor for the dub is an amateur. Jeremy Blaustein wanted to hire some real actors, at least for the major roles, but Suzuki said no. The voice of Ryo was hired because he knew martial arts.

I'm starting to look at this game like a classic car:

In its day it was the best in class, looked great handled really well, was fun to drive and was exciting. Now it looks dated, handles badly, takes a lot of effort to look after and is only fun for a few trips out a year. I prefer my new car with electric seats, comfortable ride, air con, and all the nice features, I'll send the old one to the museum.

Sorry Shenmue time to go back in the box your days are done.

I've never played this game but I think I did read somewhere that this game uses the Virtua Fighter 2 engine.

Worth noting that no one 'discovered' Ryo can do that pose, they changed the code of the game's demo, called "What's Shenmue", to trigger an unused animation when they press a button. If anything, all this is is more evidence Shenmue uses the VF fighting engine.
