Just now played through the entire game (GnG Resurrection) and 100% agree with Jeff on the art style. It is terrible. Overall, I found this game to be very boring and not fun to play (controls are very slow/sluggish with a weird input delay). The only positive things I have to say are that the music is all right and the final 2 bosses look really cool despite this overall shitty art style. I enjoyed the final 2 boss battles, but the rest of the game is garbage.

Skip this game and play Ultimate Ghost n Goblins (2006-PSP version) instead.

Amazing, isn't it?

He says it aloud in the video. He and Jeff comment using language and terms that are concrete and mean things. And yet, the people who haven't even played the game, but are invested in it...just have to sprout up and scream that somehow he's "playing it wrong."

I played the Genesis, SNES, and Arcade versions of this series, and even the spinoff game Demon Crest. All of those games are challenging, but never ball-breaking punishing as this game is on its default setting. Like Brad discovered when he played the Arcade version of Ghouls and Ghost, that game is much more approachable.

I remember there being way more blood in Blackthorne, but I was one of those people that only ever played the demo, I wonder if it was something they changed from the demo to the full release.

Edit: 10 minutes of research and apparently the pc version is the one with the blood, and this collection doesn't include it. That's super weird and lame.

I really hope they figure out some way to improve Jeff's connection and reduce the video issues, it's kinda hard to watch any videos where he's presenting. Even Vinny has far less corruption, and he's sending from across a whole country.

Brad you really don't have to keep playing the game on the hardest setting once you've demonstrated that it's really hard and frustrating on the hardest setting.

Dan beat the first level on his first attempt the first time he loaded up the game, so it can be done.

I was surprised they didn’t explain what the game meant by “this is how G&G should be played”. The highest difficulty has the 2 hit system, lower difficulties allow more hits. Of course the developers are going to point to the 2 hit mode and say “that’s how G&G is traditionally played” for those who may not be familiar, but no reason to be bound to it if you feel it’s too much.

I think the art style is totally fine, I don't love it, but it kinda hard to understand the vitriol, also I'm curious what makes the difficulty so infuriating vs something like Volgarr, which looked pretty similar in terms of bullshit (to me)

I watched a couple of Vtubers, Pekora and Korone, play this before Brad’s QL. They were more entertaining and had me more interested in the game than I was before. The look of the game is divisive, and I would say I was on the negative side until watching them and the Digital Foundry video. However, I’ll wait for a PS4/5 version.

Except he did pick the hardest difficulty. The game doesn’t just drop you in on the highest difficulty by default. He was given the choice before beginning the first stage. It doesn’t matter if it was highlighted by default, he’s free to scroll down to a lower difficulty setting. The difference between other games stating that a difficulty level was how it was meant to be played, is that this highlighted it by default.

G&G Resurrection looks fine to me but it's all about the gameplay. If they can't nail that, it's a tough sell.

To be very fair, Dan did play on Squire. Two pips lower than the default/top difficulty.

The "Spy Hunter theme" is "Peter Gunn" by the band Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Rock and Roll Racing has the rights to use that song in their game. ;)

There's a difference, because that difficulty is how the previous games worked. No banner of rebirth checkpoints and a two-hit health system. The other difficulties are different and do not hew to how G&G used to play, but that doesn't make them bad choices to play if you think the hardest difficulty is too hard.

You can't quibble over wording and also get the wording wrong to misinterpret it.

@jacksmedulla: I actually don’t hate the aesthetic per se but god it just looks like it’s no fun gameplay wise. One of those hard games where the effort put in due to difficulty is just not worth the time.

@deadstar: My guess is because Blackthorne and Lost Vikings are puzzle games of a sort and to be able to see further ahead makes them both easier in an unintended way by letting you see stuff coming up that you weren't supposed to see and in LV's case it very likely spoiled some puzzles to be able to see stuff 'off screen'.

I don't get their attitude toward difficulty. They depict games like Resurrection as if it's some macho BS to play the game on the "real difficulty", when it's just the opposite: It's their macho BS to insist on it. Some games offer a real challenge and part of that experience is taking the time to work up to it, if you so desire, by going through the game on lower difficulties first. I've seen them have this reaction a lot over the years and it's so tiring.
