Jeff sounds burnt out on games, which kinda sucks, but if anyone deserves to be, it's him.

I love that Ryan started a character named FIRE MAGICIAN like he wasn't really interested, and now he's all repping it.

It was just that I heard so much in the way of sarcasm it really put me off and was probably also augmented by all the past Nintendo negativity that the podcast contains. They complained about the low res tablet. They brushed off the 25GB disk with a sarcastic "good on em". They said it's not going to be any good when the 720/PS4 comes out and seemed to just shit on almost everything about it. There were a few things they liked like Patrick and Nintendo TViiiiiiii. But it seems that the negativity drowns out anything positive all the time.

Granted, most of it comes from Jeff. He needs a holiday or to change careers as he seems jaded beyond redemption.

I'm getting tired of all this Wii U hate in the enthusiast press.

...reading this comment, I was expecting alot of "WHAT THE FUCK? 299?? Dude, FUCK THAT!"

There really wasn't any of that. Granted, Jeff is VERY underwhelmed about it, but he also hates fucking everything, and he can atleast justify his cynicism. Patrick has pre-ordered one. Vinny wants it for the same reason ANYONE buys Nintendo hardware, to play Nintendo's games and other fun novelty weird shit. Brad is interested, and Ryan is just excited about new hardware Any skepticism comes from the very REAL reality of how developers and Nintendo have always had issues, and that this hardware may not be up to par in the similar way to the Wii with what engines and tech developers will be moving onto.

They're not writing it off, and there's nothing wrong with being skeptical.

they just sound so disinterested, Its like the WiiU is a complete non-event to them, judging by their attitude.

I actually don't know how they can get excited for that game at all. Seems like if you beat Diablo 3 recently or are playing Borderlands 2 then no idea what would drive you to start another level treadmill - especially one that just looks kind of mediocre. I dunno Ryan says he loves it but everything about Torchlight 2 bothers me aesthetically, from the drab 1990's looking menus to the somewhat childish looking graphics. I could never get into that series, but I couldn't get into Borderlands either despite really wanting to.

ALSO side note - hilarious that Brad has not finished Mark of the Ninja being the first to play it and enjoying it quite a lot.

When you can't talk about a game console without qualifying every statement, arguing the fact that it basically has to come out and developers have to support it to please their respective shareholders, and pointing out how popular it'll be - regardless of actual quality - with people who don't really give a shit about games, seriously...fuck. that. console.

Thumbs up for being among the few to have a balanced Wii U discussion after last week's news. Something that really positively surprised me! I'm glad you guys spared me another podcast full of bummer-talk. :)

lol I read your post after I made mine. I really thought they evened the negativity out with positive or at the very least neutral stuff. Weekend Confirmed did not manage that (though they're usually really good about having even discussions for both sides of the fence). That was a real pain. The Bombcast was a lot more bearable.

Jeff is probably just mad because there are no more funny DSiWare descriptions for him to read. :)

Yeah, and his reviews articulate the pros and cons pretty well. They seem more balanced. But hearing him talk at length occasionally sounds like he's down about being down on them, even. Not a knock, just an observation.

If you know about Brad's mighty achievement, I think you're safe listening. That was the highlight of the show.

They talk for a bit about Vinny and Drew's preparation for the show (and subsequent exhaustion), and t-shirts that were sold. There were some other random bits, but not all that much recap about the BLLSL.

Skepticism =/= hate. And what negativity does arise, it's not unwarranted. It's a very REAL fact that developers have a rough history on Nintendo platforms, and they're probably not too keen to have to re-experience that. It's a very real fact that aside from the Nintendo hardcore, the Wii lost a lot of peoples' interest as the years went by, even among the casual audiences. So if they lost interest, why would they be excited about a new Nintendo platform? And it's a very real possibility that the WiiU will be dated technologically with new platforms out, leaving it in the same position as the Wii where it's not strong enough to handle a port, so they have to get a separate team to create an inferior WiiU version of that game that not a lot of people are going to buy.

I'm buying it day 1 because I'd like to not miss out on the unique stuff for the system that doesn't come to my PC/360, but I realize what this can very possibly end up being as according to history...

@DedBeet said:

For sure! I mean, I want one. I have the pre-order to prove it. It's going to be a new, unique thing in the industry, and Nintendo as a developer is still pretty fascinating when they bring their A-game. Hell, Galaxy 2 is one of my all-time favorites. But I REALLY can't blame someone for not being able to muster alot of excitement about it. NSMB U is a real non-event of a game, despite that I appreciate it taking cues from Super Mario World, and even the social elements of Dark/Demons' Souls. Alot of the launch titles are things that are already out/ can be played on other platforms. Outside of the tablet controller (which is pretty dated as far as touch-screen technology goes), the hardware, while being better than this current gen, REALLY isn't in a position to hold up against the other consoles when developers move on from the engines they're using now to UE4, etc. There's just alot of signs of this ending up in a similar position as the Wii, where you have some great unique games, but they were few and far between. And I gave the Wii more of a chance than perhaps MOST people with multiple platforms did.

But again... I still want one for when the cool unique shit DOES come out. Just... I don't know that a lot of people are going to feel that way after so many people lost interest/felt burned by the Wii.

Anyone else think it's weird that Nintendo are using a 25 GB external media and 8 GB minimum storage? This leads me to assume no mandatory install for most games.

This will probably mean lowered framerate for many games, unless their I/O bandwidth off the disk is off the charts.

Am I alone in thinking that there's something wrong here?

Yeah lets be honest. Most of these guys were excited for the Wii when it came out and look how burned they got on that console. And I like my Wii. I would be surprised if they all were super excited as opposed to being reasonably cautious.

Just to kind of comment on Patricks thoughts about Nintendo and their new console. Patrick you stated that what choice did Nintendo have when it comes to a new console. I'd argue they had a choice to create a new console that is geared towards taking back the "gamer" audience.

I am all for broadening the gaming horizon. Expanding to more casual audiences is a good reason why the industry is still around today. However I feel like we have hit a point in terms of expansion. Not to mention you need to define casual gamers. They are called casual for a reason. If they are hesitant to buy new software or uninterested why would they need to buy a new console? Their "gaming" fix likely is already filled with the Wii and the few things they already have. Will a new gimmick (the tablet) really entice them to go out and buy something by the boatload? Especially when the gimmick is something most people have in their pockets and already in their homes. A touch screen.

There is nothing wrong with Nintendo marketing towards a casual. If they just released an upgraded HD console, allow all the Wii features and stuff to still work with it and still release casual software for it that also works on the Wii while focusing on getting their "gamer" audience back they would be fine. The gamer audience even during hard times still does support quality games.

While we have hit a slow point right now, with games like Darksiders, Sleeping Dogs likely not selling as well as hoped neither game tanked.

I just think it's stupid that Nintendo puts the majority of its efforts into an audience that isn't as interested in games. It's like casual sports fans. They only would attend the sporting event 3-4 times a year. You don't see the business model marketing it so all the emphasis is put on those casual fans at the expense of your hardcore fans that keep you in business.

Ripping on Killer Instinct :(... Awe man. I guess I just have to realize that they didn't even play the game. So they are basically ripping on a game nobody there even really got into.

Def. not the best game ever, but man is it fun and you can't just slap out big combos when you play with pros.

You should give The Binding of Isaac a try.

A lot of people can't get over the fact that there's no proper diagonal fire, but the projectiles have inertia that is affected by your movement. All you have to do is walk one direction and shoot in another. It's a technique any Isaac player must master.

Also many don't like the fact that there's no native controller support. But even when using Joy2Key to map it manually, you can't rely on the d-pad because any accidental diagonal movement could be your undoing. The walls and objects have friction, so walking diagonally against one will slow you down when you're trying to dodge. It very much needs different buttons for each direction, like on a keyboard.

Borderlands is so ass

That's fine with me. I've always been kind of an ass man.

Also kind of an ass, man.

I'm all up in that borderlands ass.

Get in that ass man, and write 'Larry was here'

Man... I was going to make that joke.

Eat snickers, leave garbage.

A drinking RPG by Dr. Greg Zeschuk? .. I am down with that.

Either way, I'm sort of glad for their departure. Being tied to EA always felt like a step down for them, and I'm glad they're free to do their own thing now.

I will fund their kickstarter for their inevitable return to gaming.
