I know the humor is really bad, but I bet my 10 year old would think its hilarious.

This looks pretty good. I never played BOTW, so this'll be a fresh experience. Not a fan of the humour though. Maybe I'll get it for $20, after I've played Valhalla for $30..

Ahh, the Bee Game

edit: prometheus breaking and telling the family unfriendly version of the birth of aphrodite is a pretty okay, if niche gag.

I played the Stadia demo version of this game. Definitely a wait for sale game for me. The humor is silly, but that is part of the story. The narration greek mythology game. Combat and gameplay is fine. I am amazed this game still came out when it did. I heard from the director this game was made in two years.

I said it in chat during the live show but I think people tend to overestimate the quality of B games from back in the day. This isn't a Chaos Legion or Nightmare Creatures situation, this is a high production value fully fledged AAA game - it's just not a really interesting one.

Prometheus is voiced by the VA for Adam Jensen, which makes that really stand out.

He never asked for this.

I think this game is awesome, dunno where this "forgettable B-game" narrative is coming from. It's like a more focused BotW with better combat and a slightly different focus. And that was one of my two bigger issues with BotW: one was that there were too many damn shrines and none of them felt rewarding since you knew the rewards before you did it, killing the feeling of mystery and exploration, the other was that the combat was so damn simple. There were a lot of cool things you could pull off because of the world simulation, but they were dependent on where you were a lot of the time and the random factors happening in the world at any given moment.

So far this game has had much more consistently rewarding exploration, with there being plenty of actual gear to find instead of just HP/stamina increases, and the combat feels so much better without having to pick up 80 different swords that break in two hits, but also because of the active abilities that let you really toss enemies around, air juggle, maneuver, etc.

The writing isn't amazing, but it's given me a few chuckles. The writing in BotW was almost nothing at all, and what little there wasn't exactly amazing, so I guess I like the writing here better because it at least feels alive, even if not exactly hilarious.

I dunno what B games these guys played growing up, but they sure as shit didn't look or play this well when I was little. It's just a fun ass little video game, and I've been waiting for Ubisoft to figure out they can make those instead of having everything be weighty and realistic for a while now. It's been so long since they've done a new Rayman, and Trackmania qualifies but nobody wants to play it because it's Trackmania.

This game looks like it was made with random assets marked "mythology" from the secret menu from the Unity Asset Store. Generic Ruins Pack 03 is getting a lot of screen time.

If anything, the fact that the comparison can be drawn between a dull modern-day AAA game and an old-school B game says a lot more about the AAA game than it does about misperceptions of B games.

I enjoyed the gameplay in the Stadia demo, and a few minutes of bad humour every now and then isn't enough to put me off the parts where you actually play the game.

It's a light-hearted game in an overly serious year and right now I find that appealing (and I don't have a PS5 for Astrobot or Sackboy).

I am however going to wait a month or so - based on previous Ubisoft games the chances are decent that it'll be half price by then 😀

@broshmosh: The thing is there isn't a comparison to be drawn. I mean ultimately we can sit here and relive the nightmare of trying to define what a B-game actually is but in broad strokes it is a game of "lesser quality" than triply AAA productions. Fenyx Rising has great graphics, a big world, interesting systems etc etc. It's not a B game in any sense. Whether you find it fun to play or not well thats probably fairly subjective but there is nothing B game about it's production qualities, which ultimately in my mind define a real B game. It's like the difference between a real movie and a "made for TV" movie. It's not like the theatrical release has to be interesting, but you can tell straight away that it's not a straight to DVD release.

Dualsense implementation is weird in this game. There is no haptic/rumble use or it is very light that I don't feel it (yes it's on in the system menu and works in other games), but they use the triggers. Scouting will make the triggers "twitch" (similar to shooting the gun in Astro, but not as intense), but you can't really feel it since you are not holding down R2 when scouting. I tried to hold down R2 while scouting to feel the resistance , but it does not feel good since you have to release and press R2 to pin the icon anyway. Gliding increases the trigger resistance, which again you really cannot feel because when you press L2 or R2 it aims down your bow or swings the axe. Or maybe it's intended that way so you don't accidentally press the triggers to cancel the glide?

Bow is half way decent. When you let go of R2 to shoot the arrow, L2 will shake to mimic the twang of a bowsting. But there is no resistance to holding down R2 like on Astro.

I'm enjoying the game, but hopefully the controller use gets updated in a patch.

@humanity: You're not wrong at all, but I don't think anybody was saying that Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a B-game, but that it is evocative of how a B-game feels. "It reminds me of a Haven: Call Of The King" is a quote from the video that springs to mind. I haven't played it, it's not really my kind of game, so I'm not supporting that notion one way or another, but that it can be even suggested in the first place is the surprising thing. As you say, this has the production level of an AAA game, after all.

@humanity: Yeah, Im not seeing the low tier quality for this game. Hate to say it but the internet is on this weird constant comparision that every game gets to beloved Zelda Breath of the Wild like how dark souls became the new go to for any action game. The colorful light hearted open world thing isnt taboo now that zelda exist. This seems like a charming game for kids, we need more of that since most make a zillion dollars games are trying to market to seasoned gamers with gritty storylines. Sometimes the light hearted fortnite looking game works for all ages XD.

That said they said they were turned off by the overall presentation from the name change to the BOTW comparisons (which ben and jeff dont even like much already) and then add the borderlands like humor (which ben turns off and jeff just deals with) this is just not their type of game. Hope Brad doesnt get completely turned off since he'd still hate the humor but maybe enjoy the gameplay. The humor just isnt targeted for grown men over 35 lol

@xbob42: Kinda wonder how this game would do if zelda's world was pasted over it. With characters joking around out of character on purpose. This seems to get rid of the zelda BOTW tedium jeff didnt like such as searching for stuff, food, breaking items, adding more rewarding trials, etc.

Sorta think the game fails cause there's no hook. Like how Horizon zero dawn had the hook of robot dinos and realistic graphics, cause that game wasnt some groundbreaking thing from BOTW but still did well.

That said I hope we can stop saying anything open world and colorful = BOTW.

I am still working through Demons Souls, but honestly this might be my next game. Writing isn’t my thing, but a colorful open world is nice, especially when it doesn’t have weapon durability!

This looks fine - the quintessential Ubisoft game I'll buy for $10-20 on sale in less than a year and put a couple dozen hours into before I get bored. The biggest issue seems to be the bad stoner-level humor, but I can put on a podcast and just fly around a world for a while.

But the timing and comparisons are all doing it a pretty big disservice. The third Ubisoft open world game released this holiday and unlike the others its not coming from a major franchise. Unfavorably compared to Breath of the Wild in open world design and to Hades/God of War/AC:Valhalla in terms of use of gods and mythology. Beat to market as a Breath of the Wild inspired game by Genshin Impact that allows you to do a lot of the same exploratory things for free. Oh, and a completely forgettable name.

Hard to see this succeeding for this reason, but glad to see Ubisoft doing something new. Just surprised they didn't push this to release next year when there is a lull, more next gen consoles are out there, and people are looking for new stuff to do on the new consoles.

The constant interruptions from Zeus and Prometheus are bugging me. Like quick two lines when doing a thing would be great but like every time something happens? It's also like "hey gamer you know how this stuff is all based around greek gods? Lets try to humorously explain to you Greek myths so you understand what joke we're trying to tell you here!"

Them going back and forth about the Cronus and Ouranos thing was ugh, yes we get it you don't wanna talk about a sliced testicle mixing with seafoam to create Aphrodite. They literally repeated the "I don't think it was an oyster..." bit twice! Surprised they didn't just call him by his Roman name (Uranus) and make dumb butt jokes too.

@jeff during the quick look the game hitched a couple times. (34:57). Was that an issue with the game? Or was that a hiccup from the capture process? Just curious.

Thanks for what you guys do.

I'm a huge fan of Odyssey, and Immortals coming from the same studio (the Atlantis DLC is almost a prototype for some of the things happening here) set in a Greek world definitely piqued my interest. But, holy shit, the characters in this game really don't shut up. And what they have to say isn't very interesting. Though, the combat looks more interesting than Valhalla's by a country mile.

Maybe I'll wait until next year when it hits Steam at a discount.

Wow, I was thinking of Haven when Jeff said PS2 B-Games and then Jan said it. At least Haven was extremely ambitious and well over what was budgeted, while this is like the safest, most calculated game. I did not like BOTW so this has no appeal for me; makes me curious though what BOTW fans think of it.

@steveurkel: I have, in fact, played Valhalla. I'm glad that you're enjoying it! I'm finding the gameplay loop unmotivating and the combat over-simple. Loved Origins (50+ hours). Loved Odyssey (100+ hours). But after 25 hours I'm getting real bored with Valhalla. It feels regressive in plot and gameplay, with steps forward in some areas which are counteracted by other steps backward. It's not at allbad, it's just... uninspiring. Actually, the side quests are kinda pretty bad but at least they're brief!
