I rarely ever watch the video, so I guess this won't matter. I try to clean my room or do something else constructive while Jeff drops the knowledge.

Reusing Jar puns? I expect better from the Punmeisters of Giant Bomb. Get it together, Gerstmann!

(But seriously, people should send in more questions so you can do these more often. They're great!)

You're right about the technical director in that it could go either way. It's one of those nebulous titles that doesn't really mean one specific thing to everyone. I interned at one studio where our technical directer managed the other programmers for like 30-50 minutes a week and was in the trenches coding the rest of his time. Though I've seen it go the other way around too. It's different on a studio by studio basis. It's probably safe to say Production most of the time.

Credits in games are strange. My friend Katie, a UI designer, was contracted to work on Civ V. However, because she wasn't a part of the team, and didn't work long enough on the game as a contractor, she said she wouldn't be in the credits. I know she did though because I met Sid Meier at their chruch and he said said she was the best UI designer he'd worked with.

As a programmer, I would say a technical director is a programmer. They are usually very senior programmers who have a great deal of knowledge, usually because they have to answer a lot of questions on the fly. It's true that they have to do a lot of production style management, but you have to be a programmer to do that job.

EDIT: I mean, you would say the art director falls under artist right? They usually do not do a lot of drawing themselves and spend a lot of the time managing the other artists. But on they other hand they DEFINE the style of the game and pretty much decided how the game looks, so in a sense they are the only artist.

Love me some Jar Time!

The answer about JRPGs at about 24 minutes made me think about how much I appreciate the variety of games that the crew does enjoy and cover. I'm so glad that Patrick is crazy into Horror games - as it's literally my only insight into the genre. Likewise with Drew's super technical Simulation stuff. I've got a lot out of Brad's strategy games and DOTA. From's Souls series are personally my favorite games of all time - and I tried Demon Souls years ago only because of Vinnie's descriptions of it on the Bombcast. Vinnie's FMV and Point and Click fixations are awesome too. Jeff really knows his fighting games and racing games and Blitz :).

That said if one of the guys truly loved JRPGs - that would be awesome too. Wouldn't want anyone to have to fake an interest though. Maybe they could bring in an occasional guest who has that particular bug. To be fair 8-4 probably fills this particular niche enough.

God, I do miss Endurance Runs though....

Edit 2:00 - Just watched the Metal Gear Solid Feature with Drew and Dan. All is right with the world. I officially take back the last line.

'round here kids get out of school last week of May, start back up Aug 25th. Though that depends heavily on whether they had to cancel school, and how many vacations they are given throughout the year. Some years they get out June 5th because of the way vacations fall. Two years ago the high school I graduated from had to go all the way to June 10th because school was canceled 5 days in a row for some reason or another. I know one year when I was in high school they tried starting in September, but nobody was happy with it because they cut vacation days to do it, as they still had us getting out of school end of May.

hey, @jeff

You speaking on credits reminded me a bit of what Rate Your Music (to be renamed Sonemic sooner or later) has been up to. The way they handle credits, roles, pages, and so on possibly not what GB needs (they plan on launching a games section of the site to be sibling to the existing music & film sections) but maybe you could pick up a few ideas if you haven't seen the site (lately).

They do a lot of things interestingly. Like a singer, an actor and a director (with top billing vs. other roles), a band, a hip hop album and its features, a rock album and its credits to both band members & session musicians, a rapper's credits, a hip hop producer's stuff, a pop producer, a rock session musician, a composer's page (who has both compositions & releases of recordings of said compositions), a release for classical, a film, its soundtrack, a game soundtrack by various artists, a game soundtrack by a single artist...and so on. They have some ways of sorting credits too, like on Kanye's page.

This is probably a bit overbearing, but maybe there are a few nuggets you could recover to help decide some things at GB going forward, they're doing some cool stuff too.

Man when I was a kid all I had to occupy me during the summer was a BMX, a magnifying glass and some GI JOE's. Later I got a Walkman that was the size of a small car battery and weighed almost as much. These days kids have consoles, PC's, smartphones that play music and games, tablets - on TOP of all that basic shit I had like a bike or rollerblades.

I say FUCK being a kid in the 90's compared to being a kid now - it's like you're born into being completely spoiled by the riches of technology.

Probably my best summer was my 13th when i went to Japan. Tbh idont remember much else except fucking around with ny friends and getting Secret of Mana for my birthday after playing it for the first time in Japan and though i loved the fuck out of it it kind of lost a little without the mystery. But it was kind of the last summer before everything in my life got turned upsude down a little over a year later, so it understandably holds a special place in my heart.

I was a fucking spoiled rotten brat.

Hey, my question got answered! ...sort of.

I guess what I was looking for was an acknowledgement that the trade-off of having only coverage/conversation of games the giant bomb guys like at the expense of covering games they think would be uninteresting to them kind of sucks for the fans of those types of games.

And I totally get that this site was built on personalities and not on being an all-coverage video game site, and I think that's what makes it special. I just don't think that means it's not unfortunate that there are fans out there that feel excluded ("we cover all the games that matter").

I do agree that the methods Jeff brings up as possible solutions are all bad ways of fixing this issue (making people spend 60 hours playing a game they don't like instead of doing many more productive things, and trying to dictate how people spend their off-work hours), but Patrick makes me think there's got to be some way.

Patrick has on several occasions stepped out of his genre comfort zone and found that he enjoyed certain types of games he previously assumed he disliked. Now I'm not saying this is the solution, but it makes me think there might be other ways to get that coverage without resorting to the previously mentioned, unappealing ways.

I've always thought wrestling games should be classified as fighting games. I mean, it's a game where two or more people in a closed arena are in hand to hand combat with each other! They have way more in common with fighting games than...I'm getting too worked up about this.

I don't even classify mma games as fighting games. It's a sports sim, like Fifa or whatever. Always thought wrestling games fell in the same category, even though they are a simulation of a fake sport.

Only the worst kind of monsters refer to video games as videogames. It's wrong, and it's evil, and it has to stop.
