Still watching, but I can't wait for them to boot up that ion engine and realize how useless it is for their build.

@apothaeos: Yeah. The second they put the ion engines on I immediately checked the delta v, it's tiny! They need a smaller final stage for ion engines to make sense. A Mk1 command capsule and a lander cam, instead of the three person large capsule would probably work out better.

Edit: D'oh. The VAB delta V is in atmosphere. And ion engines are terrible in atmosphere. Whoops.

It seems Vinny has also stopped going away between episodes to look stuff up and learn how to do specific manoeuvres. I love this game but there are some things most people will need to read up on or they won’t get the physics.

Oh, but the xenon engines use electricity. They need to add some solar panels and spare batteries.

@super_machine: Its going to be glorious when they get out there and pop the xenon engine only to realize they have enough power in the command capsule to run the engines for a few seconds, at most.

From the second they found that "cone" the whole episode was all kinds of amazing.

I can't watch these anymore :(

I know there's always time between recordings so things aren't always fresh, but you have to build on past experience to make any progress.

All the techniques needed to rescue this Kerbal are in the previous episodes several times over, yet here's ion engines being added without confirming the delta v (in atmo or vacuum), fairings added when there's been no drag issues, and slingshot manoeuvres with no reason to believe they're needed.

Keep it simple, save the Kerbals, save the series.

I dunno, I'll admit, I'd gotten a bit tired of over-complicating orbital maneuvers and out-thinking simple science (I'd skipped through the past few episodes), but this right here was like a throwback to the OG Kerbal QLs. Endless catastrophes both human and mechanical, benefits of Vinny's expert hands. None of that orbital matching and velocity management garbage; just fiery crashes and fatal design flaws.

thanks again, duders! I get some of the frustration people may be having with this series, but as someone equally "challenged" by Kerbal, I'm enjoying the ride. They are learning new things, they just happen to be forgetting older things as well (or just ignoring them). Story of my life.

Is it? it says 3000 delta v right on the thing. That sounds like the amount of acceleration they could use to get aero breaks going

Their delta v is so high because it barely uses any fuel, but it also barley has any thrust. They are going to have 20+ minute long burn times, during which you cant time accelerate.

All the turbofan engines AND all the rockets use "liquid fuel." (except the xenon-electric engine)

However, all the rockets also require "oxidizer" along with the liquid fuel ... except for one.

And although the "Nerv" tends to overheat, packing a bunch of liquid fuel and some radiator panels is still lighter and more fuel-efficient than having to pack a bunch of oxidizer + liquid fuel for the other rocket types.

That makes it a great "space stage" - but just remember the Nerv is not powerful enough to go anywhere starting from the surface of a relatively high-gravity environment like Kerbin - and possibly Duna.

Also, they finally discovered fairings! Woo!

Aaaand now they're keeping it after they've made it into space... which needlessly adds mass.

Aaaand watching the preview for the next episode makes it look like they STILL are not going with any sort of major redesign of their rescue ship.

They are just testing out stuff, it got said only 10 times in the video. Also, the second they found that cone it turned from a "serious" episode into "who cares, lets have some dumb fun" episode.

@jkz: I'm right there with you. These are some of the best episodes. The previous one actually put me to sleep (admittedly I didn't need a lot of help). The highlight was probably when Austin almost wet himself laughing.

If you know anything about KSP or orbital mechanics, then watching these is a factory for delicious dramatic irony.

If you don't, then watching these is a factory for dramatic tension.

Either way, I've loved every minute.

P.S. Austin, your laugh made me feel better about my shitty day. Thank you.

@austin_walker's joke about the Pope having his line of "personal massagers" fucking killed me. That was great stuff.

Also, coming to post this comment made me read the comment and remember why I never do that. Doesn't matter where you go on the internet, people are the fucking worst. If you want to watch people do a good job of playing this game, there are tons of places to watch that (Scott Manley's youtube channel for example).

I get the frustration for those that have been watching from the beginning, but their largest shortcoming is that they are becoming "comfortable" with what they think they've learned in the past, without truly understanding the specifics of their successes. But for me that's OK. The amount of time they have to devote to true learning is limited, and so they've leaned on the bits they have largely got nailed.

I look for the rescue of this Kerbin to be a larger learning experience than they've had since making it to the moon and back. Because they've begun to grasp orbits, but the scale of solar vs. planetoid, is going to really put them to task.

I don't know what the haters are talking about. I have played thousands of hours of Kerbal, I have gone to the Mun in IVA with only VVI, radar alt, and navball (two-man lander can - no orbital velocity indicator) anyway, mostly not bragging just pointing out that I what I am doing. This was a fun time for me. You guys are getting better and I am confident you'll pull this off in the end.

BTW, if you do this, you'll learn all skills and then some for interplanetary travel. Getting to Duna is easy compared to this, because if you get within 50,000km of Duna you'll enter it's SOI (sphere of influence).

Can all the haters just not watch and let those of us who enjoy this content enjoy it. "They aren't playing it right!" Ugh. This isn't like when Patrick couldn't figure out that the fire monster was immune to fire. This is fun and has inspired me to play Kerbin despite having owned it for over a year.

@jhebbel: I nay-say things because I want to try to understand them before we plunge headlong into them. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn't. I lean cautious, but it's not like I'm telling Vinny he can't do stuff. The supporting facts, more often than not, are: we don't know what the hell we're doing and I'd like to try to understand this a little more before moving forward.

well said. Fun as always guys! I love the whole papals elbow great joke. Can't wait for the next one!

By all means someone show this to "that scottish bloke" and record his reaction. It would be hilarious I am sure.
