Mario Movie is legit rad, I've never understood why people hate it so much. It's just a dumb fun sci-fi movie, who cares if it has near-nothing to do with the games? The games back then also had no story to speak of, and very simple 2d sprites. People seem to use the actors' hatred of it as justification, when of course they hate it because its production was a nightmare.

Everyone I've had watch it with the mindset of it just being some weird 90's movie has ended up really liking it. It has fantastic set design, great special effects, and casting Bob Hoskins as Mario was absolute genius. Dennis Hopper is excellently scene-chewy too.

In fact, I'm gonna go ahead and say it: Mario Movie is better than Blade Runner. Like, sure, maybe not in technical terms, but it also doesn't pretend to be far deeper than it is. It's dumb, it knows it. It also spawned this.

Fuckin' nothing from Blade Runner is even close to being as good as this video.

PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR FURTHER DISCUSSION OF HOW GREAT MARIO MOVIE IS THANKS

This movie filled me with a nauseous uneasiness as a child. Thankfully, Mortal Kombat came a few years later and made me feel better.

I loved the Super Mario Bros. movie. I thought it was wonderfully dumb. I mean, really. It was really good. It's the only movie where I was able to tolerate John Leguizamo. That said, saying it was better than Blade Runner is totally nuts! No way, man, you went off the deep end lol.

@larrydavis: I love this movie. Watched it recently with a friend for the first time in ages. I was giddy through the whole thing, while he groaned through it. They deserve credit for taking some bold choices to interpret the abstract world of Mario games and inspired casting. Also for designing the Lizard from the most recent Spiderman movie. All that being said, you're on your own for the "Better then Blade Runner" argument.

@tom_omb: Well, note that I did say "not in a technical sense", but I would absolutely rather watch Mario Movie than Blade Runner, which I find to be an overwrought mess of a movie. Maybe I just didn't watch it young enough. It's weird, it has a ton of stuff I love (Shitty Future, Space Detective, the general aesthetic) but it's just... Boring.

I also didn't see Ferris Bueller's Day Off until recently and thought it was mediocre at best. Gotta get 'em while they're young.

Unfortunately, the guy was putting me to sleep. I got through the interview and it was interesting, but he didn't sound enthusiastic at all. Oh well. That's why Patrick's a pro.

I prefer the other intro music, too. The cheesy NPR-ish theme with the "beep beep" fit perfectly. The "rock n' roll" theme sounds out of place for the content presented. Also, there's no "beep beep."

I enjoyed the SMB movie. It wasn't great, but it was a bizarre and enthusiastic fling.

I think it helped that I didn't play Mario as a kid so I had no preconceived notions about the nature of the Mario world.

I appreciate the interview, but man did it sound awkward. Steven Applebaum just seemed like he didn't really want to talk about it or get into it. Getting answers out of him was like pulling teeth. I understand if he didn't want to give away too much of what is in his own interviews, but give some examples to give us a taste of the cool stuff you learned. Tell some stories. Get excited. That's what would get *me* excited and interested in checking out your work. Instead he just sounded tired and bored. I doubt I'll look into it further, largely due to that.

I was with you right up until you started spittin' yang at Blade Runner. Blade Runner is an absolute classic! Just be sure to watch the original cut, it's the only real version if you ask me.

I'm happy those guys are out there, with all the angry/irate/cynical/annoyed gamer youtube personas out there tearing it apart over and over, it's good to see that someone's enjoying the good and/or interesting parts of the movie. While I personally don't hold it in very high regard (I love it's atmosphere and scenery/set design though), I do have plenty of movies I enjoy in similar ways - not as flawless wholes, but with lots of lovely pieces, whether that'd be atmosphere, soundtrack, particular scenes or characters. I tend to enjoy many games in similar ways too.

I rewatched the movie this year, and I still think it's amusing. John Leguizamo still likes it.

Also, good interview.
