Got tired of playing SOM and was about to find something on Netflix; I'm glad I checked here first.

This game is so wonderfully messed up.

This video series has been a good reminder that Hideo Kojima is the most Japanese motherfucker on the planet.

@danryckert Metal Gear Rex wasn't a patriots thing, Solidus was behind it and the patriots got pissed at Solidus because it was a huge disaster. Also I think the second taker was full of oil and shit because the first one just had Metal Gear Ray, and they needed an oil spill to build big shell.

Corrections to the plot (not spoilers, just 2 things that were missed/gotten wrong)

- Solid Snake did not escape Shadow Moses with the REX data. Ocelot did. During the torture scene in MGS1 Ocelot even asks Snake at one point "was this the only copy?" because it was Solidus and Ocelot's plan, completely independent of Liquid Snake and his Foxhound crew, to sell the data on the black market. Which they did. (overall not a huge detail, just clarification)

- The Patriots are absolutely an idea Kojima had dating back to MGS1. When "Miller" (Liquid) is talking to Snake and Colonel Campbell about Naomi, and why she would inject Snake with Foxdie, they say something to the effect of "could it be them?" "we can't rule out the possibility"... And then Snake is just like "what are you talking about?" and then they move onto more pressing matters. That hint in MGS1 was key. Only 1 guy from Foxhound did not die from Naomi's injection (or Snake killing them before it could, or in Raven's case he got eaten alive by birds).

Dan had is pretty good... What he got wrong is that the Patriots were not mad about the data getting out but about the world finding out about the Genome Soldiers and Metal Gear Rex. Remember from the tanker speech where The marine said every country has their own Metal Gear derivative. They want Arsenal Gear so they can better control the digital information so that doesn't happen again

Just finished this, I think I have a pretty good understanding of the Metal Gear universe and the happenings in it as I've finished each game at least twice and spent a fair amount of time on the MGS4 database, and even I'm a bit confused about it. Crazy game.

Also I'd like to propose for Dan; I think the debriefings at the end are great but on the final episode, at the end of the game don't do one immediately. Let Drew try to figure it out without explaining ANYTHING or piecing things together for him for at least a day or two. Part of the authentic experience to me is at the end just staring at the credits saying "What the fuck just happened...?" and then spending a couple of days trying desperately to figure it out. Maybe have a debriefing episode afterwards or something?

So for those following along:

Dan is being purposefully skittish about ocelot as talking about his motives is spoilers.

The fact is ocelot, solidus and the patriots were pals. Patriots got pissed at solidus for the Shadow Moses fuck up and wanted to get rid of him, ocelot helped him go into hiding, and then Ocelot under orders from the patriots stole Ray from the marines, who were outside of their control because of Scott dolph, the marine commander who had his own ambitions

A second Tanker loaded with crude oil was sent to the site of the first tanker and also sank, as they needed an excuses to build big shell. I always found this odd as the patriots are good at cover-ups anyway, they could have just lied and said there was oil everywhere but I guess they needed to cover their bases in-case scientists came snooping or some shit.

Raiden + Colonel = Working for FOXHOUND (elite black ops unit of the United States Army, supposed to have been disbanded after shadow moses)

Snake + Otacon = Philanthropy, anti-nuke, anti-metal gear group, also out to clear snakes name

Solidus, Dead Cell, Olga and her Army = Sons of Liberty, an anti-patriots group who want to throw the US into anarchy (by killing the patriots) and establish a new nation on Manhattan island (outer-heaven) Freedom for all at the expense of infrastructure.

Patriots = Leaders of the US who control everything, want to keep control. Basically the illuminati, they hate freedom as it might result in them losing power.

I still don't like the Rose parts of this game.

@insane_shadowblade85: I think that was Kojima's point. He wanted her to be the annoying girlfriend, he wrote her character based on his experiences with previous girlfriends

@insane_shadowblade85: Rose is to Mei Ling what Raiden is to Solid Snake. (by design, obviously. Kojima knew all the Rose crap was complete garbage, which to him was probably all the more hilarious)

Whereas Mei Ling is helpful yet never truly distracting while still having a decent deal of dialogue, Rose has nothing helpful to offer you and is always pulling you on a tangent separate from the real game.

Here's my impression of Dan for 60% of these videos. "Hhhhhhhhahahaha!" All that time spent laughing could've been used to make more jokes and riffs on Metal Gear. I also wish he would stop using the term "dork" interchangeably. What am I suppose to think if he starts talking about shooting a dork in the dork? Does it mean he shot a penis right in the contemptible human being area? Thanks for this feature. MGS2 still suuuuuucks.

Very true. I remember playing this game when it came out and was confused as to why she was even a part of the mission. Oh, I forgot to ask you two, do you know what tomorrow is?

I've played almost every single Metal Gear game that has ever come out,

and I'm still trying to figure this shit out. What a stupid, fun, ridiculous series. There really isn't anything like it.

In response to a few of the questions Dan couldn't answer:

1. The second tanker was probably full of oil and sunk to create a plausible environmental threat to justify Big Shell in the first place (since the tanker Snake was on didn't have anything on it except Metal Gear RAY)

2. Since Snake and Ocelot went rogue after the tanker incident, it makes sense that they wouldn't be working with the colonel, who's still presumably working within the confines of the US government / FOXHOUND.
