This is the first time I've heard about Alex's ADHD, and as a graduating student who was only diagnosed a year ago... I both understand where he's coming from, and am also glad to see that someone can work through it.

Alex has ADHD and somehow completed five MegaMan games for Blue Bombin' and routinely does drumming marathons for charity? That's not just working through it; that's crushing it.

Hey Abby, "nailed it" on steal my sunshine was a pretty good pun and the smugness was earned but I won't stand for this hypocrisy about puns being bad. Especially when you work with Vinny haha.

Dan keeps saying he has a film studies degree but he doesn't. It's a general studies with a film concentration, he showed it.

I'm no snooty academic, I honestly find the whole idea of a meritocracy tiring and just at this point obviously false and does nothing but obscure how power actually works; but it's important to remember that Dan didn't take a lot of high level film classes. So, getting mad about accreditation and hick college and all that nonsense is getting mad over nothing, he wasn't in any program.

I honestly wouldn't even bring this up cause it sounds like I'm dissing him but that's not why I'm doing this. The classes Dan talks about and the classes Abby talks about are different things, they don't have the same degree.

Can't wait for more!

If you do another warm-up next episode, I'd love it if you would just mash the B button repeatedly on Don Flamenco (1st version) when he gets up after the first knockdown. Just mash it and never stop. It's my favorite dumb trick in this game and I feel like it's one of the lesser known ones.

@grondoth: True. A Bachelor of Arts General Studies allows students to earn a degree by taking a certain number of classes that fall into various categories, basically allowing them to pick and choose what they want piece-meal and manage to get a degree out of it, rather than getting a degree in a specific area. I imagine that is what @danryckert did, so my guess is he ended up taking several film studies classes in order to satisfy a "depth area/concentration" so that he could actually get a degree, which is why he had no idea that film studies classes involved the things Abby mentioned because he was not actually in a film studies program to get a degree in film studies. With the degree he has, there is no way he was "in film school".

I really vibe with @alex with how his education went and his first IT jobs. I TOTALLY had the exact same sort of situations but maybe somehow through more meekness? or maybe I wasn't chemically more inclined to being depressed, either way, I was able to push through and continue down the IT path. I even went to ITT Tech to somehow "focus on the technology" which was BS. The only benefit to powering through is that after years, you actually can tell people that they're actually wrong lol. Is that worth it? Probably not. ITS ALL I HAVE DAMMIT!

@twoarmed: Well, there's a difference between "film school" where you learn how to make films and "film studies" which is the study of film as an art form (watching a lot of movies and analyzing the themes, symbols, what have you). It's like the difference between a Creative Writing degree and one in English. Or like the difference between a Fine Arts degree in painting and one in Art History; for the latter you might never pick up a brush.

Alex's story about IT is why I stopped doing it, Worked IT for about 15 years. Very often its a simple problem, that I had seen a thousand times, but for some reason people get mad at you for fixing a problem in 60 seconds.

We had one client, a Golf Course, about 15-20 miles away from our office at the time. They were nice, but so computer illiterate and afraid of the technology. On many occasions we had to drive out there to fix something, that usually could be talked through over the phone. I have had to drive 30-40 mile round trip to press a power button or plug back in a power cable.

But the one that started my decline, and made me want to start stepping back from general IT was one day a guy comes in with his computer. He tells me the computer "wont turn on and wont turn off." I pleasantly asked him to clarify because those are both very different issues. He responded like I had wronged him and his family back 7 generations. In the end what was wrong was the spring in the power button had broken, the computer was fine, just the switch wasn't making contact to turn it on.

About 6 months later I took a job as head of IT at a private company. While still dealing with people like that, at least it was the same 50-100 people, And eventually I was able to train them to be less indignant after a while.

Like they eventually learned I will not get up from my desk unless they have done basic troubleshooting themselves like restart the machine and check all cables are plugged in. I thankfully do not deal with the general public anymore.

@blindx0r: I know...? Except all of your examples are specific degrees in specific areas, whereas a General Studies degree is not. I just used "film school" as the example since Dan has repeatedly said (in this video, no less) that he was in film school haha.

@twoarmed: Well, you and the guy you were replying to both talked about how Dan and Abby don't have the same degree, because Dan has a General Studies degree with a concentration in Film Studies, rather than a degree in Film Studies (the difference is probably 15-20 credits in Film Studies classes, mostly higher level ones, if I had to guess). My point is that's irrelevant, they still wouldn't have the same degree even if Dan did have a BA in Film Studies, because there's a difference between Film (making films) and Film Studies (the history and critical theory of film). You might have known that, but you didn't say it, and I felt it was worth bringing up.

Hi!

Film School student here and my classes were a damn near full time job. On top of group and individual projects, there were tons of writing and research; including film criticism, editing, lighting, sound, script writing, camera and scene set up, location scouting, interviewing, budget and planning exercises etc. I had to take an entire required semester on Roland Barthes. Barthes!!!

Also, you couldn't miss class. Most classes were an automatic fail or letter grade drop if you missed 3 or more class sessions.

It was so relieving to hear Abby and Alex talk to Dan about how dismissive he is when he talks about the college experience. It really drove me nuts how it sounded like he was bragging about not having to work for his degree, but at least he understands how people can be frustrated with him over that.

I know Dan is deliberately winding up the audience, but every time I hear him gloating about scamming his way through college, I want to punch a wall.

On the drive down to college for my freshman year, my dad turned to me and basically said, "You're not going to a historically black college so there'll probably be no one in your classes who looks like you. That's because few of us have the opportunities that I worked my ass off to give you. So don't fuck it up." In my experience, a lot of other black students I knew also approached college like they were representing their entire race, and took it deadly serious as a result.

Hopefully that doesn't sound overly superior, it's not how I intend it at all. I was just taught that college is serious business. Even a decade later, it blows my mind that people actually go to college to fuck around.

Hearing Dan talk about how he doesn't believe in luck is giving me flashbacks of arguments I had with some people. They generally tend to have very victim-blaming mentality (i.e "if you're in a bad situation, you either did something wrong or wasn't trying hard enough") which I find frustrating...

Glad to see Dan's privilege and his obliviousness of it is in full display this stream. I love Dan but hate it when he talks about how he thinks college and film school is easy with out even trying to understand how other people might have vastly different experiences.
