Quick Look: NBA 2K20

How fucked up is it that the first thing they do with WNBA is a spirited discussion of how the women can't dunk, and how they need a lowered rim?

When they start actually playing a full basketball game there is always a few seconds where I think its actual footage of an arena and not CG. These games always look so good.

My thought was maybe when mascots do halftime things, but like you said there have dumb dunk contest things like Blake Griffin jumping a car or Dwight Howard dunking on a 12 foot hoop, if I recall.

@vinny Okay, fair! On a side note, how has NBA 2K not done a mascot game mode? The NCAA football ones way back in the day did them and I think the NBA are kind of the last bastion of mascots at the venues.

Could this battle of the century also feature the surprise, first-ever in-game incarnation of The Hoop Gawd (loaned out from EA like Sony Pictures loans out Spider-Man to Marvel Studios sometimes)?

@foggen: it's just one of the random conversations the commentary team can have it just happened to be the first one the game hit play on.

@zoofame: yeah, it actually always kind of bugs me when they do that. I know they say they aren’t games journalists anymore, but... any thoughts at all on the nightmare that is our children gambling future would be nice.

@the_nubster: I think it's an interesting debate, but lean to the side that the artist is compensated, by the person who pays them to draw the tattoo on them. At that point, the art is, for all intents and purposes, on a public facing facade at best for their argument, but more likely the art is "transformed" to part of a persons likeness. Unless you sign some sort of exclusivity deal with the NBA player where the player agrees to defend/compensate the artist's rights, they've given up the exclusivity in my mind. (FTR: lawyer but by no means an IP, art, or any relevant field of law)

Regarding NBA Dunk Contests:

"They're not using a trampoline?"

Then what are they? They go to events and report on stuff. This feels like a really lame excuse to not having to talk about things like lootboxes or other controversies while at the same time still benefit from the status.

It's their bodies, they aren't canvases. Should the players' barber be paid? Interesting to think about I guess, but also very black mirror.

@assirra: I mean, they have that conversation all the time, and even brought up specifically the 2k trailer on both a recent Beast and Bombcast.

I went to a few Chicago Sky games, and I can confirm that WNBA games are a lot of fun.

It helps that they used to play in the same arena as local WWE events.

@assirra: for what it's worth I wasn't trying to defend them. Just saying they've been called out for it before and that's what they said. Make no mistake, it pisses me off when they hand wave it away like they did in this video.

That tattoo artist argument sounds dumb... If I pay an artist upfront $500 to paint a dog, and they accept my money and give me the art- guess who owns that art? Sure as hell not the artist. Especially if that art happens to be on my skin. Next.

Casino, Michaeltransactions aside, this story mode is impressive. Good acting. Written well. And it looks great. I may never play this game due to me not liking sports games, but I came away liking what I saw.
