Unfinished: Ori and the Will of the Wisps (02/26/20)

Brad takes us on a walk through the forest!

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

I don't understand people that don't like Hollow Knight. It's souls combined with metroidvania with the perfect amount of rpg systems and difficulty ramp. The map/compass stuff makes exploring so much more rewarding, and you actually learn the layout of areas and they become memorable instead of just another block in the corner. It did something new and refreshing combined with just being a fucking rock solid game.

Anyways, this game seems to be HEAVILY inspired by Hollow Knight. Like, it's kinda shocking how much so. But now I'm interested for sure, I wonder how many people that liked the first game might be turned off with the changes here.

Sumptuous. Did they take out the original save mechanic?

Brad don't worry. a map costs nearly nothing in Hollow Knight. The first maps cost less than 100 geo's, in a game where you end up with tenthousands of geos. Most expensive map? 150 geo's. Calling it a grind is a stretch.

Also, if you don't have enough geo to buy a map as you find the map guy, once you are ready to buy the map, it's available for purchase in town.

This looks stunning!
It's cool that they've (apparently) been inspired by Hollow Knight,
but it also means I'll (likely) be comparing this new Ori game to Hollow Knight,
and Hollow Knight raised the bar pretty darn high.

I cheat engined the end of Hollow Knight I couldn't stand any of the upgrades or the insane difficulty ramp that game had or the almost flash like animation quality the game had.

If you like Hollow Knight good on you I won't tell you how to live your life. It's just not my cup o' tea.

Wow, yeah, these guys played a lot of Hollow Knight, its clear lol. Which is fine cause HK is easily one of the greatest metroidvanias in the past decade hands down. But this game looks great and I can't wait to dive into it.

Which reminds me, the sequel to HK should be coming out sometime soon , or maybe around the new console launch.

I thought Hollow Knight's difficulty was structured in an intelligent way. At first, you don't have much health so it's quite hard. Then you explore the first area's and gain power. Once the main quest of the game becomes clear, you get to choose your difficulty. Are you going 'off the map' into area's that you don't necessarily need to be just to figure out what's up there? This is the difficult part of the game, but will lead you through parts of the map you will otherwise never see. Or do you focus on the main quest bosses? These are designed to be very completable for non-completionists and end up being a cakewalk if you have explored the map beyond what the main quest asked of you. Some people will beat this game after 4 bosses, others will beat nearly 30 bosses. For those that truly want to test their limits, you get to choose to play an optional platforming arena that pretty much turns this game into Meatboy. There's also an optional combat arena that asks mastery of the combat over a long period of time. You can make this game as hard as you want.

@mellotronrules: Agreed! That final boss was so epic, and I even liked the White Palace platforming section leading up to it.

Both are great games obviously and totally different. But HK is up in the same tier as Super Metroid for me personally.

@mechanized: Which parts in particular? Most of what I've seen here seems very similar to Ori 1, with some stuff from Zelda and character action games thrown in. I didn't play a huge amount of Hollow Knight but I'm not really seeing the comparison.

Giant Bomb's weird distaste for Hollow Knight always confused me considering its near universal acclaim everywhere else. It's as close to perfect as a metroidvania can be, I can't think of a more intelligently designed game. I'd go as far as say it has surpassed Super Metroid and SOTN as the new standard for the genre.

To keep this on topic, as someone who didn't love the first Ori, hearing the sequel might be heavily influenced by Hollow Knight has at least me a lot more interested now.

@sirdancelot: Can't be worse than Jeff's Outer Wilds take on the GOTY pod. Between that and his bouncing off Hollow Knight, I'm eternally bummed he is so dismissive of what are probably my two favorite games of the last 5 years.

Dead cells is infinitely better than hollow knight which is a good game but doesn't even come close to dead cells.

The only frustrating thing about Hollow Knight and Giant Bomb is that there isn't anyone to counter their negative impressions, which is really weird for one of the best games of the last decade. Like, this whole map thing is such a minor detail, I didn't even think about it when I finished it.

@steveurkel: Dead Cells is a mindlessly repetitive slog compared to the intricately hand crafted world and abilities of Hollow Knight.

Sorry everyone I had to correct a flawed (and really rude) correction, but we’re all good now.

Ori the original is a great game as well. Their saving system was really clever and let you played as dangerously as you wanted to. While the escape sequences could start to drag as you replayed them over and over again, you couldn’t deny their spectacle. Just a really great game in the metroidvania pantheon so I’m really looking forward to this here sequel. Day one Game Pass baby.

Can't wait to play this, especially if they've expanded on ways along the lines of Hollow Knight. Ori was a tight, fun experience with great movement, and had some really great sequences that took advantage of all that. But (at least for me) I didn't play it until after Hollow Knight, so it got overshadowed by the best Metroidvania ever made, given that Ori is comparatively linear, guided, and less rewarding of exploration.

Also like hearing the worst Hollow Knight takes in the world for the tenth time. Don't get discouraged Brad, it's an amazing game.

I really like the mobility going on here. I gave up on Blind Forest when it first came out, because the difficulty frustrated me to no end. I've been playing it again now on PC since it's on Game Pass and while the difficulty spikes still make me grit my teeth at times, I think I'll try and get through the whole thing this time. Will give this one a go too, that decision made a lot easier by the fact that it'll be available on Game Pass.

I put around 30 hours into Hollow Knight, maybe, then my old man hands couldn't handle the combat anymore and I lost any interest to keep going.

I played Hollow Knight on Switch some years ago and really bounced off of it. Whereas Ori is my favorite metroidvania. But all this talk of how good HK is and how the new Ori is heavily influenced by it is making me want to revisit HK with a quickness and give it a fair shake!

I really enjoyed the original but I just can't get excited about this. It always felt like a game that should stand alone. Can't help but feel like "been there, done that". I don't really need to do it again. Feel the same way about Nioh 2. I miss when sequels would take big risks with major tonal shifts and bold ideas. Though, this was always designed to be a comforting game so its nice to know it'll be there when I'm craving this kind of thing.

I look forward to playing "Ori and Does Team Cherry Need to Contact their Lawyers???"

Wow... Someone (or several someones) at Moon Studios / Xbox REALLY LIKED playing Hollow Knight, so much so they made this, which is uncomfortably close to a near 1:1 ripoff in places.

Hollow Knight is easily one of the best independent games of recent times.
