My favorite part of this game is the boring human names all the NPCs get.

Yep. I don't know why it puts such a dumb smile on my face. Everything else looks unfortunate and kind of boring.

@phr00t: This really looks like something I'll enjoy. Weird in just the right way. Also, robots are rad. I'll check this out as soon as I'm able.

@hatking: Thank you, I hope you enjoy it!

I understand some people won't like the visuals, but I am very glad many do & go on to enjoy the game. I am working on some visual improvements, but I won't be able to satisfy everyone. Anyway, please consider giving the game a try -- you may like it. If you don't, thank you for at least trying it out!

In the best possible sense, this reminds me of a game from 1999. It's super complicated, the graphics are awful but it's really interesting.

Cool! I played this guy's game when it was still in baby stages and he was posting to /r/gamedev. It's come a long way. And if some of you guys don't like the current visuals, you should have seen it in its early stages.

Personally I'm kinda into the pre-PS1 VGA/MCGA polygons...

Me too. That style has such an attractive balance between simplicity and detail. Although I find myself surprisingly receptive to the PS1 polygonal look as well. For a long time I was turned off by the relative crudeness of boxy-looking models compared to more recent visuals. At this point, though, modern game graphics are able to approximate reality so well that when I look at older 3D visuals now, even PS2 era games, they seem more stylistically distinct than merely inferior attempts at modern modeling.

Eldritch made it clear to me that PS1 style graphics hold up just fine provided the game design and player control are up to current standards. That's not to say there aren't polygonal games that look bad; there's a certain degree of craftsmanship required, the same as any 2D pixel styled game.

In any case, it's refreshing to see smaller games branching out from the NES/SNES visuals, even if they end up preying on a different kind of nostalgia.

I'd play something that looked like Mercenary III's box art:

I'm kinda into what this game is going for. Getting somewhat of an Cyberstrike or Heavy Gear vibe from the graphics style. The quests seem dumb, but in a kinda charming way, though I'm not sure if they'd hold up in the long run if every single one is that kind of two part thing where the objectives have nothing to do with each other and mostly seem to boil down to waiting for an countdown to end.

The music is great.

I'd love it if modern games would strive to look like old box art instead of attempting to look "realistic", also, Silpheed on the Sega CD is a good example of a game doing the Star Fox graphics style you mentioned:

So what's the "goal" of the game? You just do these simple quests over and over?

Is there something larger you working toward? Is there any interaction with other robots in the game apart from shooting or stealing from hem? Is there any limited communications with them or competing factions or anything like that?

It doesn't seem like there's anything here more novel here than say, Warframe, a game which is free and has vastly higher production values. This is no a critique so much as I feel like I must be missing something and want to be enlightened, because if the Quick Look truly represents all there is to the game, I don't know why anyone would play it over a game like Warframe.

I still remember one of the previous games, which is also a number. That was back when I watched the yogscast and they covered it. Feels like ages ago.

At the time the game honestly looked just...bad. Don't know how into it the yogscast were when they played it. But something about it really intrigued me. Be it the art style, or the randomness of the world. I kind of liked that crazy goofiness that I saw. Never got around to actually getting the game though.

Maybe I'm CRAAAAAAZY (I am), but I really like the simplicity and lack of density of PS1/N64-era graphics and environments. Always have. Game looks pretty cool.

So is this the beginning of indie games replicating the PS1 early polygonal look?

Yep. At least they moved on from 2D platformers.

I don't think this is the beginning but it is one of the first. Also I think it's the N64 early polygonal look and frown on calling it the PS1 early polygonal look.

It isn't nearly blurry enough to even be remotely related to the N64.

@heatdrive88: Nonsense. Maybe it's related to not having seen N64 games on original hardware since my N64 broke ten years ago, but I don't remember any blurriness playing N64 games. Besides the rereleases in the last generation (Wii VC and the Banjos on XBLA) are still quite N64ie even without the alleged blurriness. I don't think it's a core part of the aesthetic.

@themasterds: Haha, you may want to double check. Mind you, a lot of N64 screenshots you see that were taken, may have been taken from inside an emulator on a PC as well.

@heatdrive88: There are plenty of really pretty N64 games. Hell, the Banjo shots you included are among them. Ain't nothing wrong with those Banjo screenshots actually except perhaps image compression due to the limits of image size in that era. I also think there's probably some image compression going on with the first image although also that one just looks like a crummy game.

I think N64 games still stand up. I don't think PS1 games do. I think we should refer to retro 3D graphics as N64 graphics since the N64's polygons didn't swim and whenever anyone talks about any games of that era they talk about N64 games. Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye. Those are the 4 games you will hear mentioned most when folk hearken back. Plus you got solid games like Conker, the Banjos, Paper Mario, Majora's Mask, Diddy Kong Racing, Smash Bros 64, etc which while not reinventing the wheels, like OoT M64 MK64 and Goldeneye, were pretty damn solid as well.

Sometimes i wish they would spend an hour or two before doing a QL. i understand they want to show it from right out of the gate but a lot of games today have a lot of systems in place and if you are just asking or saying I dont know or wasting time going through menus it does the game a any positive service. I dont think this game is great, but there is depth that would makes it interesting to me more if you showed me a save that is a few hours in. All in all it was a fun QL. Best quote by Vinny, "You got this" when clearly jeff is getting owned by the robot at the end.

@me3639: I agree with you. With some games, such as this one and other very open RPGs, it'd be awesome if they were able to spend some time with the game prior to Quick-Looking it. Sadly, it's just not practical. They don't have the time to spend an hour or two leveling up and acquainting themselves with any game during work, especially not a small, never-gonna-be-reviewed-ever indie game that they'll probably never look at again even in their free time. But it sure would be nice, right?

Also the "combat music" sounds like something out of Batman Beyond.

It looks more like an Unreal mod I played in the early 2000s.
