Quick Look: Boulder Dash-XL

Something about the graphics makes me think of old B sci-fi movies. No idea what it is, but this looks like the video game version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, it's mediocre but it also kind of showed some promise at parts.

o man i fucking loved this game when i was a kid.

...and this remakes sucks ass in only the way a recently remade classic game can.

Had this game on an A800. It was one of my favorites on the system.

I never actually had boulderdash, but I did have a really old PC game called Felix which was basically the same thing!

The original was an amazing game.

I too said "Imperial!" after the end of level 2.

Played the demo of this and hated it. Stock sound bites (isnt the fan fare from Wii Play Tanks?) Dreadful `lazy` graphics. Boulderdash Championship Edition DX this aint

The fanfare is some old ass sample CD stuff, and was used it lots and lots of shareware games in the early 90's when digitized sound finally started getting widespread.

There really isn't anything wrong with using stock sample CD stuff - almost every sound in Doom is a stock sound you're bound to hear in other games and movies (the door opening sound was in every sci-fi-esque movie for a while, and the pistol sound could most recently be heard in the Battle: LA FPS game). It's rare and expensive for game developers to record all or even most of the sounds themselves when most sounds, except dialogue and the odd monster or futuristic weapon has already been recorded and packaged onto a neat sample collection CD. That's not to say Boulderdash XL used the stock sounds well though, some probably weren't even necessary, but other than that there was a sense of just picking stock sounds at random when they combined the robot theme stuff with a fanfare out of Rampart.

This quick look reminded me that I played a lot of Rockford when I was a kid. Best part was being the doctor and collecting hearts while avoiding eyeballs.

The look of this game makes me think it's been made in LittleBigPlanet 2.

Ugly ugly game. Alot of red & blues in the color palette....

I don't like the Rockford change.

I want a flaschbier (http://www.giantbomb.com/werner-flaschbier/61-33558/) -remake - the supermeatboyversion of boulder dash.

The problem with this game seems like it's relying on it's updated looks for the new crowd and the nostalgic tip for the old crowd (me).

I played this game to death on the 800XL and Chris Gray must be puking at this remake. It looks & sounds awful but more importantly, it doesn't have the playability from the original. I can't even justify buying this for old times sake.

What a shame the original game wasn't just offered instead of the 'retro-mode'. Let's the player decide which version he want's to play - original or update.

I love C64 Boulder Dash – I used to muck around for ages making levels in the Construction Kit – and I'm not entirely against the restyling of this re-imagining.

It's a bit weird not having the iconic Rockford character in the new mode, but that's a small gripe. I'm even not that cut up about the "classic" mode, because I can just play the originals whenever I want. The lazy-and-cheap-as-hell sound work, however, is fucking terrible.

I would play Led Zeppelin's Boulder Dash.
