Glad to see they're doing a Quick Look of this. I'd been meaning to look into this game.

I like it. Seems more in line with most of the other things on my system. I usually have to turn the volume up a bit more for GB stuff.

Same here. After the video ended, I went to turn the volume back down to normal before unpausing my music. Then I realized I had never turned it up.

Seems a bit too dark and pretentious, without being particularly esthetically pleasing like, say, a Braid or a Limbo. Think I'll pass.

Bought this last night after being pleasantly surprised by the demo. Great little game, curious to see how the difficulty curves up later in the game....

It's nice that it's louder, but it's just a tad too loud for me. I've actually had to turn my/the video player volume down for all the Quick Looks, except for the Raccoon City Quick Look, since the move. 10 - 20% quieter would be just about perfect.

I didn't think this game wasn't very enticing at all. Then again I'm sick of every indie game being a platformer.

This game is a huge mindfuck. As soon as I tried the demo, I had to buy it. Much like Braid, you have get to get used to a completely new way to play a platformer.

And the music is creepy, great sound design when you go into the water.

Pretentious? I'm really not sure where you're excavating that kind of info. All I saw was a series of black and white puzzle rooms.

I'd also argue that it has just as much aesthetics and visual personality as something like Limbo. That game goes for silhouettes and this goes for more of a black and white comic/print making look.

Quick question: Why is it in black and white?

Now answer without talking about old movies or still photography or the struggles between light and dark.

Well, I could give you a couple of reasons:

First of all, and the most obvious to me is for game play purposes. You're safe in the light, you're not where it's dark. One could even go as far as saying the mechanics are pretty "black and white" so why muddle it up with colours? Sure making it black and white certainly adds an esthetic appeal, but adding colour wouldn't add to the game play; in fact, I would say in this instance it would detract from the experience by taking focus away from what really matters: the puzzle solving. The stark contrast of black and white make it really easy to tell where you can and can't go.

And if that's not good enough for you, this was also developed by a small indie team, which means they more than likely had limited assets (i.e. time, money, people) so if you can get your art team to stick to only black and white, it should help make development as a whole much simpler. There's a lot of work that goes into the colour therory used in games - not that making it in black and white, makes it a walk in the park for the artists - and if you can "skip" that part, it probably helps with the development as a whole.

Does that make it pretentious? No. Artsy? Sure. Bad? Most certainly not.

You can have colors and still have shadow. And are you really saying they couldn't afford color? Really? Come on, they did it for the aesthetic alone. Not that there's anything wrong with being pretentious. I just think it's really boring to do an indie game in black and white. Might as well have made everything look 8-bit, too.

Simple, its an easier visual style to convey. You're only dealing with two tones instead of a whole variety of colors. It makes the visual style more cohesive and is immediately striking. Print making uses a variety of inks and hard cuts to create similar looks. Black and white is also just its own style, black and white comics rely specifically on line art and heavy shadow for plenty of similar reasons.

"You can have colors and still have shadow."

- True, but that just complicates things.

"And are you really saying they couldn't afford color?"

- No. I think you misunderstand my point.

"Really?"

- Yes. Really.

"Come on, they did it for the aesthetic alone."

- That's possible, but there's really no way to know for sure. Smart developers rarely do something purely for esthetic reasons though.

"I just think it's really boring to do an indie game in black and white."

- You're entitled to your opinion.

"Might as well have made everything look 8-bit, too."

- They could have. It certainly would have made the visuals simpler and could in theory help streamline the puzzle solving, but I think what they did by making it only black and white helped serve their purpose well enough. :)

Tyler Glaiel, the genius behind this game is from my hometown, I think that's pretty awesome.

"Pretentious" seems to be the go-to word to describe indie games that are low on bells and whistles, when in fact they are just low-budget, low-manpower efforts which require simple, solid atmosphere or mechanics to accomplish their goals.

If you don't like the game, that's cool. But don't just attribute words to it or the developer when you're just trying to justify your dislike.

Is it just me or is the sound mix much louder than usual?

I like it. Seems more in line with most of the other things on my system. I usually have to turn the volume up a bit more for GB stuff.

Yeah I'm a big fan. I used to have to turn my volume all the way up to hear them clearly. According to the volume mixer the sound is very close to system level now.

As for the game, I'm pretty tired of 2d puzzle platformers...WITH A TWIST, but this seems cool enough.
