Quick Look: Deadbolt

Alex becomes death, the destroyer of zombies. At least that's what he keeps telling us but frankly I'm not convinced.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

I just want to throw out there, risk of rain is probably one of my favorite games to come out in the last few years. Some of the menus and stuff felt very game-maker like but overall man I loved that game.

I wish it had a really high jump and a mechanic that lets you hang from the ceiling and attack enemies from above and hacking so that you could control stuff like light switches from another room and maybe a cool detective story? oh...

This looks like it tries to be Gunpoint but it has less mobility. It also seems to try to be Hotline Miami without any of the sense of style. Also zombies. Not interested.

I can't speak to GBEast's PC capture setup, but Alex seemed to be struggling with the controls a bit. And the game does seem difficult, perhaps deceptively so.

It was just a bit frustrating to see Alex showcase a sort of Brad-like bullheadedness when it came to stuff like...constantly retreating away from vents and doors instead of going near them, so that when he tries to cover more distance he gets shot to death.

@cooljammer00: Yeah, I'm wondering if the controls are just deceptively simple, or are they truly confusing? Both Alex and Vinny said they were having issues with remembering the controls and Alex demonstrated his confusion amicably in this video.

Re: Rhodes - once a CBS property! CBS had a musical instrument division(!!!)

From Wiki:

The instrument evolved from Rhodes' attempt to manufacture pianos to teach recovering soldiers during World War II under a strict budget, and development continued throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Fender started marketing the Piano Bass, a cut-down version of the piano, but the full-size instrument did not appear until after the sale to CBS in 1965. CBS oversaw mass production of the Rhodes piano in the 1970s, and it was used extensively through the decade, particularly in jazz, pop and soul music.

I'm confused why you would ever not start with the Revolver because it is the perfect gun to be a hard boiled bounty hunter. Also, isn't the SPAS-12, like the Tommy Gun, kinda garbage?

Well with all the good reviews i was expecting a little more from this game, but it just kinda a looks like another "one of those games" without much added. I was expecting cool ass powers and monsters to fight or something

This isn't really compelling me much, though it's hard to say without getting my hands on it myself. That said, I feel like the only person who absolutely despised Risk of Rain despite trying very hard to like it, so perhaps this studio just doesn't make games that speak to me.

Yeah. Played an hour, finished the first set of levels, not really sure about the progression.

It's okay?

From what I know Hopoo definetly wants to go back to making RoR. Very unlikely to be in the form of expansions as in his own words, the code for RoR is absolute spaghetti and introducing new content is just very likely to introduce new bugs. So yeah, it'll probably be RoR2 or something.

Personally I think this game is cool as hell. Definitely picks up once you start fighting vampires and the such, and also has an excellent soundtrack. The main issue I have is with the Hotline Miami and Not a Hero comparisons. Deadbolt has a purposefully far slower pace than those games. The enemies do take their time in between noticing you and opening fire, and similarly, you yourself have longer animations for certain actions that leaves you open to getting shot.

I listened to only the audio of most of this Quick Look, and it was like listening to a strange role-playing radio drama. Honestly, it was somehow better than the bits when I was watching the screen. Failure as imagined in my head from the audio was much more enjoyable than actual in-game failures that I could see. It also highlighted the excellent sound design of this game.

I thought the trailer for this game made it look really cool.

But I guess this looks...fine?

I'm just not really sure why they made the main character Death, but seemingly do nothing with it.

They could have just made a game about an assassin with magical vent teleportation powers, but instead they weirdly seemed to go with a game about an assassin who is also Death in human form, killing drug using, illegal gun wielding "zombies" who hang out in drug houses with angry dogs

Unless there's some sort of twist later, this seems weird and kinda lazy.

The 2nd area has vampires as enemies (I don't think that's a spoiler that matters, but whatever). Beyond that there's some 'cassettes' to collect with backstory but I'm not convinced there's any payoff.

From reviews on Steam it looks like people are only talking positively about the gameplay.

Him aiming above or below the person before he went through the door, even though he knew the aiming was going to change when he went through the door, was confusing as hell.

Frustrating to watch him do it over and over. Am I missing something?

I liked Risk of Rain, but most of this game just looks like a somewhat shitty take on Gunpoint (and/or Ronin without the tactically interesting parts) (and/or Hotline Miami from a worse camera perspective). The zombie stuff on top of that just makes it come off as extra boring

This kind of reminds me of Hotline Miami. With the story only mainly coming in between levels at the "hub" and the die often/respawn quickly gameplay and learning enemy movements. That being said I wish there was a way to throw weapons to stun or kill enemies.

DEATH DONT RELOAD

This seems super simple, I really liked Risk of Rain but I don't think I'd pay 10 bucks for this. I'd like to play it if it ends up in a Humble Bundle or on sale for $2 or so though. Does anyone know how long this is/how challenging it gets towards the end?

For 10 bux I'm enjoying it. But to each their own. The soundrack really makes it though.

But there is something about a game that lets you knock on a door and let them answer and just shoot your way into the room. "What up! Its Death!"

Vinny was making fun I think but there are in story reasons why they are zombies and why Death in coming after the Undead.

Seems interesting, but I think I'll wait for a sale. Really wish it had a few more quality-of-life touches on it, like a low-ammo warning as Vinny says, or a Hotline Miami-esque way to lock your cursor. The inconsistency of the enemy AI is also weird; it's hard to tell what's going to alert who, and how many zombies are going to be unhappy about a thing you've done. And what decides whether or not they enter a door or just pace in front of it a thousand times?

A slow-paced instant death game seems cool, but neither this nor Ronin seem to hit the nail on the head. Lots of little nit-picky issues which I could see really souring the end-game.

China Mieville, author of Perdido Street Station, is my favorite author right now. Everything he writes is just a little bit tilted, and an awful lot of fun.
