Quick Look: Destiny

So basicly it is a mmo? Ugh no thanks (cool for people who likes that , but not me)

Do they explain at all why Venus looks like that? Or are we in some Buck Rogers territory of science fiction?

The little robot buddy mentioned something about ruins that date back billions of years which makes no sense even on an Earth-like planet much less one with a geology like Venus. Aaaaah I'm thinking too much.

some how I'm reminded more of Titanfall, when it comes to hype and execution from the developer.

Bungie is incredibly bad at story telling. Their games have lots of lore and backstory, but they make it completely inaccessible.

A lot of people didn't like the story in Halo 4, but it was actually the first Halo story I understood and generally liked.

@jangowuzhere: I think saying it has 'incredibly bad' story telling isn't true; it's not amazing, but it's totally fine. As for the inaccessibility, I think that's an incorrect word for it, since it is easily accessible if you want to go out and get those kinds of things; more like inconvenient, since you have to have something else, like a Kindle or something similar; go out to a store and buy their books, or you have to watch their movies and what have you. Or, you could just read the free wiki, which is good enough. When I quoted Dan, I just meant in the sense that I find it hard to compare Halo's more detailed story to Destiny's more bare bones one; it's not really the same.

Eh, Destiny is fine. The areas repeat too often and it suffers from being far too much of a clone of frankly better games, but it's a perfectly acceptable, fun game. Just wish there were some skill choices or more of a sense of freedom. Oh well.

Not really, that is the sadest part of all. It taken the mmo quests from years ago of talk to questgiver go to place, go back to questgiver and it gives a quest in the same place but a slightly different location and does that over and over.

Hell even WoW went away from that quest model when they decided to give you all the quests in 1 go so its 1 trip to do everything.

I'm guessing you can chalk all the magic terraforming bullshit on Venus up to the Traveler. I'm digging the game to an unhealthy degree but the lore stuff really is silly garbage.

What's with the haircuts?

So the story is there for the game your ghost buddy is playing, while you play a semi-intelligent ambulatory turret gun simulator game.

I get that the meat of the game is in the multiplayer shooter aspect rather than the story, but that does raise some doubt in me about how Bungie is going to sustain it for 10 years with a weak storyline that no one cares about. Are they going the route of CoD for example, where the games are linked by name and game mechanics rather than story, characters and setting?

Enemies can drop guns and armor. But just like the ammo drops, they don't really stand out and the reason you pick them up is probably because you ran over them accidentally, not even seeing they were there.

I am really enjoying Destiny. I knew what to expect from it after the Alpha. But yeah, it seems like everyone's fears were true. There doesn't seem to be a lot there. Still, there is enough there for me to find it really awesome. There is enough different guns, ships, abilities to make it cool.

Also, I find the global events or what they are called, to be really awesome. I am also really enjoying teaming up with people I encounter in the game.

Just out of curiosity, how many of those events have you run across? I've spent a fair amount of time screwing around on Earth and Moon patrols and I've run across one event in the past two days. They seemed like they popped up every half hour or so in the Beta.

I had a bunch of them yesterday, but none so far today. Seems a bit random. Not sure what all factors into them occuring or not, but it is really strange. Sometimes there are tons of people walking around and nothing happens. Other times I'm there by myself and it suddenly happens and I'm supposed to take out one of those huge things myself.

Doesn't work properly yet. But when it works well, it is really awesome.

Vanguard weapons are more than level 10. Every time the stock refreshes in the vanguard supply, they update to your current level. They are also some of the more powerful weapons and are pretty damn cheap. Obviously weapons with actual upgrades are butter but the vanguard stuff can hold it's own until you get a better weapon.

Oh, look, another shooter. Pass.

Destiny is fun as hell! It has its flaws but simply being in the game environment is enjoyable; it tickles my nostalgia for Mass Effect, Halo, and any spacey sci-fi stuff really well. The shooting feels just right, probably the best console controls I've ever encountered for this type of game. The gameplay loop and reward/item system are extremely tight.

All of these elements combine to make a game that constantly has me saying "Alright, one more mission." and continuing to play for extended periods, losing track of time.

I have a new game that involves predicting how long a video / podcast will go before a wrestling reference. There aren't many that make it past 10 minutes!

I expected missions to go beyond go place > scan shit > fend off enemies so I'm disappointed. I don't mind my RMA taking this long..

Still prefering this over room > shooting gallery > room retardom that affects COD games, as much of a great step forward in evolution Blops2 was.

Still deserving to sell better, make more money, meet better reviews than Titanfall.

and oh man the PSO1 bosses put everything to shame here :(

After spending a number of hours with the game last night I got past the Alpha stuff, I avoided the beta in case it burn't me out on the game.

I know that wanting to solo games is my problem but the way it takes soo long to get back in after dieing in a darkness zone really makes for a poor game flow.

Also having to go back to space just to pick the next area, which is very likely the exact same area, is poor design.

What!? You didn't think Great Clips would make it to the end of the Universe?

Man, I've even tried to avoid pretty much all media of this game other than this quick look and some E3 stuff but I just can't care about this game at all.

Where is the live stream that Jeff and Brad did when the servers went up on Monday. Did they not archive it?

This game seems not at all like how I imagined it would be from the initial announcements. Steady decrease of interest with each look :(

I just love how they have used color composition in the emblems. Sadly game is just good enough for quick sessions.

I'm loving the hell out of Destiny but it's an odd FPS experience since it uses a kind of modular campaign mission structure. There's no real singular progression through the campaign so everything feels bland, disjointed, and ultimately forgettable.

Here's hoping Destiny 2 will have a deeper campaign. Everything else about the game is solid.

500 millions dollar marketing budget well spent.

The fact that Brad sounds like he's coming in over a com is perfect here.

I wonder if they'll do a Golden Gun variant to multiplayer where you use that sword.

Also if you go to the space map and select the question mark at the bottom right corner after completing the story, you get the credits where there's a Paul McCartney song.

Enjoying the crap out of the game, but Jeff's early summary of every mission is eerily accurate. It's all very repetitive so far.

Cortana is off the memory stick and is well and fine on Windows Phone. Fucking love Cortana.

Wow i expected generic gameplay but I didn't think Bungie would do such cheesy cutscenes.

The whole game seems to be lacking a soul. I can say with confidence that it's not for me (even if it ever came to PC).

Everything I see of this makes it look less and less interesting. It really looks boring as hell.

See the thing to me is that Halo focused and doesn't overstay it's welcome, Borderlands has interesting weapons/classes, and MMO's are generally about playing with friends and meeting new people. Destiny has none of this and I'm baffled that so many people pre-ordered based on the hype. It's a solid 3-star game but it lacks interesting content for the length that they expect you to play.

Maybe all the DLC will introduce interesting classes and mission types but for now it just looks like a "wait for super cheap GOTY edition" game to me rather than a must have.

I like this game, but I am a sucker for loot driven games.

This quick look makes the game look like a ton of fun? Maybe you just have to play it multiplayer?

This looks very well made, but rather bland.

I was debating whether or not to buy an Xbone/PS4 for this, but I will just save my money instead. Or maybe use it to upgrade my PC a little.

Oh well.

Navigational Ship Bonding is a way better name than Loading Screen.

It's pretty amazing to play Destiny now and see how much it's changed in the years since it was released.
