The multiplayer for this thing is surprisingly elaborate and, dare I say, intruiging...

This game doesn't look all that bad. I've definitely seen far worse this year. I don't understand why you feel the need to be so overly critical towards it. Seems like it wronged you in some way.

To me that game is very much an indicator for how demanding a critic is. Jeff for example, could never be convinced that's a good game, because the quality of the shooting just doesn't hold up to the best shooters. However, Vinny and Patrick absolutely loved it because of the characters (who are all ridiculous stereotypes, but also kind of endearing in terms of having nostalgia for 80s action movies) and because it doesn't play terribly.

@sweetz: Sadly, I never played it, but based on what I've seen of that game, I would probably sit somewhere between the two. I can get behind some ridiculous ass characters and still not enjoy playing the thing those characters are in.

I'm surprised by how few people are able to recognize sanskrit, and assume those tattoos are Japanese. Sanskrit looks incredibly distinctive! The Game Informer guys did the same thing.

Could be any number of reasons for that, though. We have no idea how much behind-the-scenes work there is, how it's divvied between the 2 sides, and what other factors there are. Also, it's implying a cooperative effort is actually competitive; I'm sure GBEast would argue they're just covering for GBWest while they're busy, and that someday GBWest might increase their output to cover for GBEast if they're busy.

Yes, but by doing the controls displayed on the screen it would surely answer their question. I mean that's kind of why the prompt was there in the first place.

The multiplayer in this game reminds me of Age of Conan a bit. I never actually got into the clan battles too much in that game, but the concepts seem similar.

The heads popping into the sky like champagne corks is fantastic in spite of everything it says about this and all video games.

this game feels like it would have come out during the era of third person cover based shooters ripping off Gears of War.

This is like Afterfall Insanity meets Mindjack, with like a little bit of Shadow Warrior.

This was totally worth the £20 I spent on it and the game definitely goes places for anyone who's wondering. It's not a great game but it's a decent palette cleanser after all the AAA open world games that have come out as of late. That is if you can tolerate some 90s esque dumb macho satire.

@jesushammer: I think you are talking about memes in the sense of "silly gifs on the internet". Memes are more than that and have been around for a very long time and is very much something involving popular culture and culture in general; its just happened that in the last 8-10 years the term is more synonymous with things like "grumpy cat" or "come at me bro" than anything else.

Aside from the frame rate, it's not that objectively bad; it's not a game you'd want to play over an Uncharted or Last of Us, though. And much of the criticisms Alex makes towards Itagaki can equally be made towards Kojima, but he knows he'd be torn to shreds by angry Kojima fans, I guess.

I could totally get behind this game, with its dumb weird action dude protagonist, if it was a better playing game, and also played up the weird. Basically, if platinum made it. Dumb action dude is no Bayonetta tho.

This looks like it fell out of a PS2.

This game gives me huge Duke Nukem Forever vibes, being bad for the same reasons -- it's built like a game nobody likes anymore. An annoyingly try-hard hero straight out of 1990. Claustrophobic level design. Outdated objectives and gameplay, just follow an arrow into a room, blast everyone in the room, then go to a hallway to another room.

If this came out in 2002 it would have been a hit. But right now it feels like a relic.

I'm not buying the game so I'll have to take your word on it being truly horrible, my opinion was only based on what I saw in the Quick Look.

The feeling of "piling on" comes from all of the Twitter hate and other people online calling this game total garbage when it honestly doesn't look that much like trash and I'm not sure how many of those people have actually even played it.. That piling on seems to be a real trend with the gaming media these days and it feels like once everybody has an accepted punching bag they let loose, and then pull their punches for games that deserve some criticism but seem to skate on by unscathed.

I'm coining a new phrase: table placer. A game where the mechanics and general game play is so trite and boring that you can't help but feel urged to just place the controller on the table, turn the game off, and completely forget it ever existed. Devil's Third is a table placer.

@engineno9: I have an idea of what you're saying. I've definitely seen games bagged on in ways that felt out of place to me before. I personally don't think Devil's Third is one of those games.

I would play this game, but I would not pay $60 US/ $75 CAD for it.

This game is the modern version of Drake and the 99 Dragons. The gameplay might not be as broken, but the game itself is just as crappy.

The Battle of Arizona!!!

The game sure have some cool set up. "Lord of the digital age", Kessler syndrome and a world wide EMP. And there looks to be something in that multiplayer mode. But that singleplayer... and that gameplay all in all...

I'm also really curious what went on with this game. I mean, I'm not surprised that it's not good, exactly, but it doesn't seem to really incorporate either of Itagaki's main things (those being extreme skill and extreme boobs).

I could hear Alex's soul over the internet beg Vinny to let him play this for an Endurance Run. I swear I could.

The devil's third is all that's left of this game's Metacritic score. Maybe Alex can make an exception and give it 1.66666666667 stars.

It's so weird to me hearing people saying "Kessler Syndrome? What's that?" or "It was in integral part of this obscure anime." Guys, it was literally the majority of the plot and action of a major Hollywood movie 2 years ago, winning numerous academy awards. Have people really forgotten about Gravity that quickly?
