This is a really good quicklook because they go straight into the gameplay and not fuck around in menus

The cut scene that starts the lost mission is actually taken from Doom 3. It wasn't made for the addon

Did Brad seriously put away the machinegun for the shotgun to fight spiders? What the fuck? The machinegun is the best weapon for them and the shotgun is the worst. Watching that made me cringe, and he did it 3 times

After the blessing that was Jeff and Vinny yesterday we get punished with Brad and Patrick today. God truly moves in mysterious ways. Ha ! Ha !

At least they didn't start in the menus so that really helps, and they seem really cheerful, man.

Also, $40 for this is a sin.

the problem with doom 3 was that it was a game unbecoming of the doom name

No subtitles on this, none on Of Orcs and Men. . . Really? Subtitles should be required.

Edit: Oh dear! pointed out that it was 007 Legends that didn't have subtitles. That's even weirder, considering these are two pretty big-name games that lack them.

Blargh. Is that what you say?

Doom 3 isn't very good, hopefully Doom 4 (if they ever get around to finishing that) will be better.

I think the reason I don't like Doom 3 is that it constantly reminds me about the first person section of the Doom Movie... ugh.

I think you guys are totally high when it comes to comparing Doom 1 & 2 to Doom 3. There's a big difference between having monsters randomly placed in a room for no reason (Doom 1 and 2) and hiding them in the walls and only unleashing them when you have your back turned (Doom 3). Doom 3 is cheap as hell. It's prequels were not (most of the time). I don't feel any tension at all when I know before entering any room that the monsters wont come out of their hidey holes until I cross the point in the room where my back will be turned.

My main problem with Doom 3 at the time was the complete predictability of that formula coupled with the way that everything about the design was obviously being informed by technical limitations imposed by Carmack's overzealous attention to graphics. I think Doom 3 is the ultimate example of why programmers should be subservient to the requirements of good game design.

He single-handedly killed Id's entire engine business and gave Epic the chance they needed to take over.

You know, if a game wants to be scary, it needs character. Doom 3 did not have character so it kinda didn't have a reason to be scary.

Oh yeah, Brad mentioned PC mods for the original Doom 3.  My favorite is Sikkmod with the Wulfen Texture Pack. In addition to graphical enhancements, Sikkmod also lets you tweak gameplay values - I like to crank the difficulty as high as it'll go, but give myself just a little bit of health regen so I don't get totally screwed if I manage to survive a difficult encounter with like, 5hp. It's the only way I'd ever consider playing Doom 3, at this point.

I got a shooter with great action and atmosphere.

@Chris: Dude, D1&2 were no different at all in that regard. In those games there were constantly doors/walls opening behind you once you picked up an item and so on.

@SomeDeliCook: The video suffers from major framedrops based on activity on the screen then? It moves like what Doom 3 on releaseday 2004 for people with ATI cards because Carmack decided to write an engine based on something that only Nvidia cards used.

Yeah you can have your atmospheric cramped hallways and two imps at a time I'll be over here shredding my sick midi guitar, circle-strafing at 45mph, and pumping 100 rockets that I don't gotta reload into a bazillion hell knights.

They say that this game was a disappointment to people expecting Half Life when really there was too much Half Life in Doom 3 for it to still be Doom

I beat both Doom 3 and the first expansion on Xbox, trust me, it never drops below 60 FPS.

The one single time it dropped below that was when I slowed down time, shot rockets at enemies, and explosive barrels went off. Thats it, it never had a single hitch or stutter

Yeah. These are small enemies that attack in swarms. I was face-palming there too.

As to the whole flashlight thing, I think they did that because there's more enemies in this version. I don't know if my head is failing, but I remember the prevalence of one-on-one encounters being a point of contention with people in the original. Now, you're getting swamped by dudes left and right.

Also, funny how he complains about the flashlight lasting too long, then runs out of it while fighting the spiders.

60FPS on the PS3.

Both versions, actually. It's the video itself that limits the framerate so they can actually stream it to people who have OK internet connections and not great one.

EDIT: I did play Doom 3 on the original Xbox and enjoyed the flashlight mechanic there, but now I enjoy actually having a flashlight in the BFG edition. Bummer that they took out the shadows, though.

I really wish they weren't so bloody lazy with their quick looks.

Don't just drop us into a game so we can then spend 4 minutes watching the character die. IT's really rather boring to be brutally honest.

It didn't happen in this quick look, but my biggest problem is when they spend the first 10 minutes walking around in a circle or back and forth in the same little area while going in and out of the menu mumbling "Oh what did I want to show?...errm where is it? Hmmm? I'm sure it was here".

Stop going into these blind and at least spend 30 minutes before hand going over what you want to show before -- some times embarrassingly -- fumbling your way through 30 minutes of death scenes and swearing.

Machinegun is a little more effective against the spiders simply because you don't need to reload as much, haha.

I played Doom 3 a lot on the Original Xbox back in the day. Loved it to death. I liked the fact that you couldn't have the flashlight and the gun out at the same time. It added some more intensity to the game. Do you see, or do you shoot? (By the way, the melee attack was a flashlight swing.)

Doom 3 is just one of those games that people either love or hate. There isn't any middle ground. Plus, isn't the Doom franchise just "Monster Closet Gaming" anyway? I've played all three to completion and always remembered getting flanked or surprised by monsters that showed up out of no where.

Also, when Brad and Patrick were complaining about the flashlight, did they mention that it was on a timer or did they just go on thinking that it has infinite power?

Team Shoemaker/Klepek on this one. I enjoyed Doom 3 a lot and just like Patrick and Brad, I really appreciated the flashlight mechanic in the original Doom 3. It was also the first game for which I hooked my PC to the big TV and sound system.

Nice QL.

If you have to defend a game that hard, then maybe the complaints people have about it are valid? Doom 3 doesn't suck, but it doesn't feel like a Doom game. To say that the game was better when you couldn't use your flashlight and gun at the same time...is weird to me.

Man, Brad and Tricky are really upset that they fixed the flashlight bullshit that ruined Doom 3. They've also got no idea what Doom and Doom II were. And I coulda sworn I watched Brad play Doom II a few weeks ago.
